I remember living in Paris for a few months during college (back in 2001) and was bowled over by how lovely all the people were. My French was "passable" but they were all so understanding and patient. Your Parisian vlog made me want to go back toute suite!!!

Love your intro regarding languages. Here's the thing tho: Not everyone does speak english but I noticed most people understand a good bit and try to help you anyway, especially in Italy. Whenever I asked for directions they would try to help me with a crazy mix of Italian/English and it was always helpful lol. Just really sweet. And I'm not a native english speaker myself but it's (as you said) the *one* language that's helped me everywhere I went. Btw: If you enjoyed Paris, visit Rome next. Trust me on this one.

Next time you’re in Paris and want an appointment at Hermes, let your hotel concierge call them up and give you an appointment. The hotel I stay at (Le Meurice) always do that for me and they always give me an appointment the same day or the day after. I’m sure Hermes will give an appointment to a person staying at the Cheval Blanc.

They are not doing that anymore. I went twice last year and I stayed at two different hotels ( High end) and was told the same. They do offer to do it but thru the same lottery system, they are not getting any privileges at Hermes for the hotel guests anymore. Sad 💔

So much respect for an influencer who travels and does not only get footage from luxury stores....I find that so tragic and mostly do not finish watching. So happy to see you treated yourself to then full Paris experience. I myself was surprised by the pizza not only in Paris but in all of France...feu du bois 😂. And the large Vietnamese population means great food too. The art, history and architecture is unparalleled. I like your purchases too!

I live in Brussels, which has many foreigners working for international organizations like the EU and NATO. Although EN is not the mother tongue of most foreigners living here, it is the language used for communication. And it can work perhaps if you are a tourist or visiting for a bit, but things are different when one actually lives here. FR and depending on where you are also NL is needed if you want to deal with administration and even for everyday things. This is also the case for France. Long story short: for traveling and for sites and popular places one can get by with EN, but otherwise, it is impossible to get by without at least a basic knowledge of FR. Still, Paris is great for visiting! There is so much to do, one would need to go many many times to take it all in. Glad that you had such a nice time. ❤

I absolutely adore that Celine bag -- have to get one now. Paris is relatively cool and moist in August, from my experience. The NYC energy became clear to me, as a native NYer, when my Brazilian friends (quite sophisticated, world travelers) came to visit me and I could not get them to go north of 34th street! It was so frustrating but they were incredibly intimidated and enervated by the vibe. It was a revelation to me as I go all over the world and never feel that. Everyone in Europe speaks English and I have to ask them not to speak English to me, just so I can practice my French or Italian or whatever. Great to see Butters. She must be so happy to see you. Thank you for taking us along and sharing this exciting milestone. 💖💖

A beautiful little jewel box of a boutique hotel, right across the street from Serge Gainsbourg’s house. Parisians definitely show their appreciation when you attempt to speak their language. Oh, the atmosphere of that enchanting city. I want to go back and indulge ALL of my senses, which would include shopping for special pieces at Moynat, Lemaire and Dries van Noten😍💁🏻♂️

I went to Paris for my honeymoon back in 2015. It was my first time and I speak absolutely no French but I do Spanish which came in handy at a couple of places. However, I found that when I attempted to speak French the people would be friendlier and just speak English to me. The couple of times I began by first speaking English was when the locals wouldn’t even bother with me. As far as food, the best food I had in Paris was from a Japanese restaurant - delicious!

I think that calmer energy in Paris vs NYC comes from age. I noticed the same thing the first time I went. I’ve felt it in other cities that are so much older than the U.S. It’s like the city has been through so much and NY/U.S. is a teenager in comparison and can act as such. 😂

Most Europeans can speak at least 2-3 languages. It is a part of our curriculum vitae. I am also multilingual. I travelled a lot and I can see a very distinctive cultural differences with the way people behave in Europe and the other continents like Asia, America etc. I also worked in American/NY company based in UK and there is a big difference in work culture too.

I was also worried because haven’t we all heard stories of how the French dislike Americans? I recently watched Purple Noon with Alain Delon. First of all I was shocked by his beauty. Second of all the movie is entirely in French but I was able to understand everything that was going on. It was the most wonderful experience. I highly recommend watching this movie in It’s native French. By the way, my grandmother learned English by listening to the radio and after by watching television. By the time I was born when she was 40 she spoke English wonderfully. I also had a boyfriend who’s mother had been in America for over 30 years but she was not able to speak English at all except for saying hello. Determination makes all the difference in the world.

Regarding the VAT, the EU charges a VAT of approximately 20% but the companies that process the refunds (such as Global Blue) take close to half of your refund as their “service charge” so you only really get about 10% back (look at the fine print on those forms). That said, the exchange rate is so good now!

Glad that you had a wonderful trip, Michelle. I think Paris suits you) Loved all the OOTD looks. Paris is my happy place. Don’t know how many times I’ve been there. I try going every year for the injection of culture, beauty, food, architecture. My French is limited to 10 words but I never had problems in any part of France and I spent quite a lot of time on Cote de Azur. As long as you try, smile, sing bonjour and don’t have an “entitled” attitude and genuinely appreciate people, you will be fine. People appreciate when you make an effort and stay friendly. Next time I hope to see some Micheline places on the food list. Never have I ever had pizza in Paris lol but we always book at least one Micheline place a day. And last shopping. Samaritaine is better than Galleries Lafayette but check out Les Bon Marche next time. You’ll love the curation of merchandise. It’s where French shop 😅 and boutiques of course. See you in Paris!

I have never paid customs fees on lux goods coming into the US. I assume if u land carrying ur a shopping bag from a designer store they will stop you. But it’s doubtful they will go through your things. And I don’t think the purchases are stored or attached to your passport. The scanning of the passport happens just for VAT offices (I’m guessing!), they don’t share that info with US customs. That’s why it’s such a good deal to shop in the EU. Unfortunately Heathrow doesn’t offer detax anymore 😢. Surprised I didn’t run into you, we went to a lot of the same places 😅

To get a VAT refund , you have to spend a mimmum of 175 euro in one transaction. I was in Paris in November, and I received my refund in February, refund went back on to my credit card. Most retail stores will fill out form , but you need to have your passport with you , or photos of passport info. If you process your VAT return at the airport be prepared for a long line . It took me about 30 seconds once I got to the machine , but I waited in line for about 25-30 minutes. So factor that in to your time , can you afford to wait in line, this before you check in etc.
