We just started to talk and I told him that I was about to travel to Iceland for three weeks to work with Icelandic horses as a part of my education, and he told me that he was a groom at Blue Hors. At first I thought he was kidding cause BH is pretty big deal here in Denmark, but he then showed me pictures and I was so impressed. I am not talking about this particular stable in this comment, but talking in general terms: To be honest, I couldn't care less how fancy a stable is, even if it was made of gold. The first thing I want to know, is, if a stable has pastures and do the horses get daily pasture time, at least 10 to 12 hours a day. Horses are herd animals, with a nomadic live style. Keeping them isolated and without access to a pasture is animal cruelty in my eyes, because the horses are then deprived of their basic evolutionary needs. I know every horse is different and has different needs and wants in some areas, but the needs I mentioned above apply to every horse, be it a shetland pony, warmblood or clydesdale, be it a companion horse or a grandprix horse, be it unhealthy or healthy as an ox - companionship and being able to move around in a pasture. I am pretty sure any horse would choose herd mates, friendship, socializing with other horses, being able to roam around in a field over a human and a 4 x 4 m box to stand in 22 hours a day with two to three hours of work throughout the day. I know quiet a lof of fancy stables do that, because these sport-horses are "too valuable" to "risk" putting them in a pasture. And the lucky ones that get pasture time, for some hours, often have to stay alone to avoid injury. Luckily there are also examples that proof otherwise. Some equine sport stables take the horses' needs into consideration and try their best to accomodate to their needs by giving them time in a pasture with other horses. There are studies that proof that these horses are healthier for a longer time, in body as well as their mental state. And that is easy to understand, because everybody who thinks about it rationally, should know, that moving around in circles in a tiny 4x4m box for most of the day, can't be healthy on a horses' joints. And no wonder, if they then do get a chance to go outside, they literally 'explode' for several minutes or longer to get rid of the pent up energy, therefore increasing the risk of injury. It as a vicious circle. To bring this monologue to an end, I do get that some people want to ride equine sports and therefore have certain needs in terms of facilities and training possibilities for themselves and their horses, but these people should still make sure that the evolutionary needs of their horses should be take care of. I don't know in which category to place Blue Hors stable. I tried to find fotos or maps online, but couldn't find enough information. I have a strong feeling which category it could be, but no proof and therefore will make no assumptions, because I could be wrong. And that wouldn't be fair to them at all. I know what I want for my horses, and that is being able to have friends, socialize and being able to move around all day long. And I am happy they get to do that. I work with them daily (in hand work or ridden work). Its just more work for me, fetching them from the pasture and cleaning them up before work.

Blue Hors is a very good stable- my guess would be that the horses get 8ish hours of turnout a day. Give or take depending on the weather and seasons. I do know for a fact they actually turn out competition horses though- Blue Hors Matinee passed away due to a pasture accident a few years back and she was one of their top competitors. (Also, believe it or not, some horses do prefer to be stalled- I’ve taught mine how to ask to come in, and one of them frequently requests to be brought in. He likes his turnout but he also likes hanging out in his stall napping and munching hay, especially if it’s really hot out. One doesn’t want to ever come in unless it’s really hot or really cold, and the last one could care less whether he’s in or out)

They have got 300 acres for the horses, the weather is just bad, you could see how wet and muddy it is.

@@jennyfaser4831 It's Denmark - it will be wet and muddy almost all year round (maybe less in the summer, but sometimes even then). So rain is not a good excuse not to take the horses out. I didn't like that we couldn't see adult horses out in pasture either, now that they have so much of it.

@@julianiklassonhyden1216 which part of Denmark are you from? Hasn't been that wet in my part all year round. Well, winter of course but otherwise it's not that bad - usually. If you let the horses out on the muddy paddocks you will ruin the paddock (and maybe the horse). It'd be too slippery and they would just make holes in the ground ruining the grass until there's only bare ground with quite dangerous holes even if it is dry. Just imagine a horse running around the wet paddock, slipping here and there, doing sliding stops and turns. The mud will pile up around the horses hoof as it drags off the surface while sliding. Those little piles will dry and turn into tripping hazards no matter what the weather is like.

@@jennyfaser4831 If the paddocks are small, yes, they will be muddy. Ut horses can actually survive some rain and mud. If they have enough space, dried or hardened paddocks the mud wouldn't be a problem either. Not being turned out daily however, is not horse-friendly. However pretty the stables are. Now I don"t know, maybe the horses are turned out daily, maybe they are not. I just mean, rainy weather is not a good excuse to keep them inside. If we keep making excuses like that, their possibility to move freely will be very limited. Matt says it's horse friendly though, meaning the turn-out in pastures, so I hope he is right.

Don Schufro! He was one of my favorites years ago. That was so cool to see him in the video.
