Lydford Castle, located in the village of Lydford in Devon, England, is a historical site with origins dating back to the Norman Conquest. The original structure, built around 1195, served as a prison and administrative center for the region.
Unlike typical castles, Lydford Castle was primarily a courthouse and gaol (Jail), rather than a military stronghold, reflecting its role in law enforcement and justice in medieval Devon. The castle’s most distinctive feature is its square stone keep, constructed in the early 13th century.
Adjacent to the castle is the Church of St. Petroc, which dates back to the Saxon era, making it one of the oldest in the region. The church and castle together highlight the dual roles of Lydford as both a religious and judicial center.
