The quality of the pins matter. You don't want them breaking and risk having a hard-to-see and hard-to-find needle lost somewhere in your home. You wouldn't want to find it by accidentally stepping on it. Cheap pins are more likely to fall apart/have the colored ball at the end detach. It may be a little more pricy but it's well worth having you from a serious injury.

I find the Chaco chalk liner pens and the triangle chalk wheel to be so much easier than pens. With the triangle it doesn’t even have a lid like the chalk pens do so you don’t have to pull the lid off before you get working (I always forget this step)! You also don’t have to worry about the chalk drying up. There’s also water soluble marking pencils that look like colored pencils that I got from Hobby Lobby and those work pretty good also! You can get all the tools I talked about at hobby lobby, the Chaco pens aren’t on their website but I’m pretty sure they carry them. They also have the chalk refills for a great price! For people who have a hard time with holding seam rippers there’s one by Fiskars that’s a tabletop seam ripper. It sits on a disk that you set in the table. You only have to hold the fabric. I’m really excited to try it out because I have a hard time holding seam rippers and they kill my hands. Mine should be here today.
@maxHeadroom325rayxerin4 ай бұрын
all you need are needles, thread, Pins, and the scissors. Messuring devices can vary and seem rippers/snips are not as necessary
@LydiaNaomi4 ай бұрын
Mmmmm I beg to differ my friend. Seam rippers are especially essential when you’re starting out! But I suppose you could use your scissors or a pin to help you get the stitches out but just keep it simple and get a seam riper super cheap. Unlike the one I picked up this video 😂 I must mention that all of those tools were half price and if you get them on Amazon or add a sewing supply store like the one I go to in Toronto, they’ll be way cheaper!

Absolute needs are a good pair of fabric scissors 35-40 dollars. I recommend LDH scissors Pins or clips that are not from the dollar store $5-$10 Paper scissors for patterns $1.50 get those from the dollar store Tape Measure $0.50 Fabric marker of some sort - you could just use a pen but that will stain cheapest is some kind of chalk $8-20 if you can get just one piece of tailors chalk it should be less than $5 You probably have an iron and ironing board Thread $3-5 per spool Extra machine needles if you don't have some $10+ Fabric - start with your thrift store if you're really trying to save money Your machine probably has a seam ripper but they are super cheap if not Fabric is usually the most expensive thing if you are buying new, so be aware of sales online and in your local shop :)

Reminder to everyone complaining about the prices: there are lots of sewing materials on secondhand sites if you want to save coin (also why you so upset, it's not your money?). Canada is expensive AF. Anyway... "Advanced beginner" sewist here and this is a great list!
