They rebuild the Ford V10 6.8 engine all the time. Every single time they rebuild a Triton 6.8. V10 it’s always the same expression, “why’d anyone want to to rebuild a engine with a reputation like that one” Is the answer my friends, that actually a V10 engine still blows us away, with two extra cylinder and better gasoline mileage than a square body Chevy, Ford, Dodge. Few would really care. Truth is that they got a Triton V10 in a lot of vehicles that are already on a list of vehicles that would naturally always have an engine replacement. Which makes sense? Or is it because emissions laws prevent an upgrade to a more excepted engine.

Thank you for showing all the pictures of the breakdown and re-build. Fascinating stuff for us pilot chair motor heads! Kudos to the shop knowing they could remove the engine out the front of the rig by dis-assembling it. I think that's something your previous repair shops had no idea could be done. BTW- based on your reviews on the Letric e-bikes, we purchased 2 and had them delivered to the dealership in Mesa that is preparing our 5ver. We pick up Jan 6th - see you on the road!

Glad it’s all fixed and you are on your way. Just wanted to tell you about a mechanic who did a video on the Ford V10. His channel is just his name Steve Cox and the YT title is Are Ford V10 Engines Trash? That’s a come on title because although it’s a kind of rough video, he tells you why it’s still a good motor other than mileage. His engine has over 350,000 miles on it. It’s like anything else, maintain it properly and you will be ok.I think you will find his discussion interesting. Happy New Year too!

I highly recommend having an injector cleaning performed. It’s less than $100 and if one of the injectors failed like that, another could be right behind it. I’m a Mercedes master tech and we used to share a shop with a Ford dealer. We used the Ford chemicals to do injector cleanings on Mercedes. Very good stuff. It always made a noticeable difference on cars that had some age or mileage on them.

Steve St. martin It is definitely not something you can do yourself. Adding it to the tank would not really accomplish anything. It is run at 100% solution directly into the fuel rail. You can very likely find an independent auto repair shop that can do it for you. Especially shops that sell BG or Wynns products.

Saw your other vid and came here to see results. Good to hear you didnt get taken. I am very fluent in these v10s after the first one i had sounded lile it had an upper end valve issue. I took it to the dealer and was told it needed an engine, 10k and i said no way. Took it home and started looking around, noticed the back lower exhaust manifold bolt broke off. It is very common on ford and gm engines. Replaced the bolt and manifold gasket for under $50. It was obvious to me the dealer never looked at the engine. Fyi yes it also caused several codes that mimicked a lower rod knock or head valve train issue. But simple visual inspection and a mechanics stethoscope found the culprit in under 15 minutes. These v10s will go 300k no issue and most place dont diagnose them properly.

Hello Brian. Wanted to share with you something we had in common. I work for FedEx, self-employed. So my step van for delivering packages which is just like a ups truck, had engine issues. We buy lots of FedEx trucks with Ford engine in them. It was like you said, very frustrating that they could not work on them because of its size and it been a commercial vehicle. OMG I was so frustrated with them. My attitude was if your going to sell these Ford engines in our FedEx truck and Rv's and not provide services, then get out of the business. LOL I had like yourself had to take my truck to a trucking company. Which to me is very funny, because they had the equipment to work on them but had to go to Ford to get the parts. Talk about been _______ fill in the blank. Enjoy your travels and thank you for your honesty. It's greatly appreciated. You are ahead of my wife and I for now. That was a great price. You are right. Could happen to any manufacturer. Especially in this case as they often share injectors. From seeing Picts I’d agree that was the problem. Nice vid... Now, detail that rig and sell it, you can get all that cost back and then some. The V10s are nothing but trouble on pulling heavy loads. Too many moving parts creates too much heat in small areas of the engine that lacks proper cooling even though the cumulative engine temp reads normal. To avoid more heat related problems change oil and filters every 3000 miles. Oil is cheap, overhauls are exp. diy is less than $500 for every 100,000 miles.

All vehicle brands have issues. When I was young my dad told me "Chevy makes a Corvette and a Chevette and that shows the range of 'quality' one maker has." There are some brand new Corvettes that are junk off the lot and some basic low end cars that never have a single problem. These are all things that wear down over time and at different rates based on how people drive them so people complaining about one over the other are all hot air. No sense in complaining about the maker when you really only have reference to YOUR VEHICLE and YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH IT. Glad you got it all fixed.

Light load there is not as much problem. He said to run an injection cleaner ( professional system) and to get coil packs checked as they detriate ( or better yet just replace all at same time) . We too are full timers and considered Class A vs travel trailer. We decided on travel trailer just because of these potential problems. We heard that most Ford dealers will not do service on RVs and many commercial vehicle mechanics will not service RVs. Any Dodge Ram dealer can service my tow vehicle while we stay in our travel trailer in a local RV park. As it turned out we parked our TT full time in a Seniors RV park near South Padre Island and bought a smaller hybrid camper for going North in the summers. Just so much easier to tow the little camper. We have A lot of Class As permanently parked in our seniors RV park that have not moved in years. One is a Provost. All that investment in drive train sitting unused. And we had more flexibility in floor plans with a travel trailer. Perhaps if we had a Class A we would have not needed to get the smaller hybrid camper. We learn as we go along. Now I bought a Harley so we wish we had a small toy hauler.

We've all been there with engine problems, glad to hear all is well. IMHO the rationale for getting a gas V10 engine over diesel was reasonable. I had V10 in a 98 Ram 3500 and was happy with it. I'm not sure the extra cost of diesel maintenance, fuel and acquisition cost is worth the extra torque and longevity. Also, great price on the rebuild.

Good info. I replied to the first v10 problem video. Mine is being replaced with an engine from Jasper. I'm waiting for it to come in. Luckily I am able to stay in the rv while waiting for it. '16 Bounder with 33,069 miles on it. $18,000 to r&r the engine with intake and oil cooler. No warranty on mine so it is painful. Distressing how hard it was to find a place to do the work. I went with gas thinking finding a place to work on it would be easy. No so. Caveat Emptor!

Looking at the rings gap and oil burn marks the people who had the RV before you used it for long periods of idle and cheap oil filters and lack of oil changes. The top of the piston is the indication oil was burned in the cylinder. Fuel injector leak would be washing the piston down. The radiator would cost the engine to overheat in one part of the engine. And show normal operation.
@LyfUninterrupted
@LyfUninterrupted 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. The previous owner gave me the entire repair and maintenance history as well as all paperwork/receipts. He had the oil changed at a Ford dealership or RV shop every 3000 miles. At some point the #2 compression ring apparently seized which may have allowed oil into the cylinder? The spark plug electrodes were melted as well, but the check engine light never came on nor did it throw a code.

@@LyfUninterrupted I just bought this coach. I have less then 1000 miles on it. Skyler (my wife) and I bought it to be able to start having Family adventures with our 2.5 year old and probably our parents from time to time. It was said to of had a full inspection on every part. I found out that is not a real thing. It was not a huge deal because I am a trained master tech and it has been fun fixing everything on it and creating new systems to really make the Coach ours. I noticed very soon after i bought it that it has a very slight misfire so i decided to do the spark plugs. I took the plugs out and they were the worst plugs I have seen in all of my years. Most of them were missing parts and I know that means they were bouncing around in the engine. I brought it to a shop because, yes, I absolutely could rebuild and change an engine. I don't have the equipment to change an RV engine at my house . They quote me somewhere north of 20k. I found your video and called them right away. They are getting me in on Monday and they were way more fair. (very close to your quote in vid) I told them I would like to do any upgrade that they recommend like the high volume oil pump to keep this engine bullet proof. I am a Chevy guy myself but most RVs are on the f53 chassis. That being said this is not a failure of the engine this is lack of preventive maintenance. I also saw that you guys ride SXS . We have a great group of guys and girls that we ride and camp with. If you ever find yourself out here we should ride. I also have a 4 car garage and lots of tools if you guys ever need to tackle some smaller jobs but need more then you carry with you on the road . I am very thankful for your video because it changed my nightmare RV into something I can live with and learn from.

Great video showing the rebuilt process. I was hoping to find a video or two today offering a FIX as in preventive fix for the famous Ford V10 engines in the late 90's through 2006's I believe that are famous for throwing sparkplugs and leading to very expensive repairs and even rebuilding engines. So still looking. Every single RV class B & B+ I've been looking at seem to have favored the Ford V10 engine. To be fair I haven't seen any reports of any RV user with low or high odometer readings having had an issue. Only on line scare reporting. I did read that if you are worried to change your plugs more frequently than recommended. And also the brand of spark plugs may be more favorable than others. They also do sell kits from 150 to 300 even higher that repairs sparkplug damage to these Fords. But that's only after the damage occurs. Right...anyway I thought I wanted Ford over Ram and Ram over Chevy and siince I've been searching and twice now lost the RV that fit me to a T I'm less picky. Been looking for a year now. And we live in rural MT and it's 100 miles to nearest airport of fly out size and 200 to Spokanes airport. So part of our problem is traveling in time to one before it sells out from under. That includes putting down down payments that are ignored if seller chooses to sell under us anyway whch has happened by dealers and owners alike now. There are some decent sellers however out there just more patitence to find and be first in line so to speak. Thanks for this video it was definitely educational. I'm a solo female camper who's hubby of now 50 years is not into camping but he's fine with me going. That makes us both happy...me a happy camper not having to drag along an unhappy camper. Works for us and as you know lving a full time RV life there are a lot of solo females of all ages out there who have similar partners as well as just single ladies who enjoy the outdoor and scenic trips. Off to do more searching on this subject.

Hi Tim! The engine had about 40,000 miles or so. Certainly low mileage, but a 12 year old engine. Not sure if or how age played a factor. There are tens of thousands of these V10s on the road and very few have serious issues according to many professionals I’ve spoken with. Sure some owners, like us, have had serious issues, but there are still many thousands of these engines in service that are performing reliably. You don’t hear much about those though.

Make sure your ECU is okay. I lost an engine this way. Two of the injectors were putting out too much fuel. Injectors were fine but there were two bad MOSFETs, which control the pulse width. Killed my engine. I didn't realize there was a problem until I got the new engine in and connected my laptop with the dealer software on it and it saw some bad numbers on those two cylinders. Got a new ECU and had it programmed properly and it's been running beautifully ever since. I would have destroyed the new engine if I didn't happen to check the engine with that dealer software.

Glad you got taken care of by a good repair shop. I have 90,000 miles on a 2002 twenty seven foot Fun Mover. I highly recommend the Banks Power Kit and Transmission Computer. Unbelievable difference in drivability and performance. I have also found that the coils should be replaced with the plugs. I have had three go bad. The price of the coils and plugs is reasonable as a set on Ebay. The coils are not the problem but the rubber boots that cover the plug insulators fail and short to the cylinder head. Do not use twenty weight oil. I reccomend thirty for engine longevity. I do not use twenty in any vehicle.

Great info! I have the Banks kit on our rig too. I spoke with a Ford Tech and he also recommends going to a 5W-30 or even a straight 30 weight in hotter climates. Thanks for watching!

I am a retired Automotive Instructor and have seen and heard with my own ears many problems with the factory recommended light weight oils. I would never recommend twenty weight oil in any motor. As a motor grows old, so does the internal clearances which leads to even faster wear and more windage that can not be removed by the oil control rings. End result is oil consumption. You need to raise the oil viscosity with the milage to help fill the void in the clearances that have grown and control windage which leads to oil consumption.

The engine shop uses 10W-30 conventional oil for break-in then said I can switch to OE recommended oil. I’m inclined to stay with 10W-30. My understanding is that the OE recommendations are driven by the need to make stated MPG. Your thoughts?

Very nice job by the rebuilder. And a superb price. I think you run a scan gauge as I do. Is there anything that could be monitored that would have foretold this? At any rate, congratulations on a good repair. Now get back out there and have some fun!!

An injector can fail closed or open. Probably a good idea to just replace injectors after a certain time/mileage. How many miles were on the RV at the time of failure?

Hey BigNick! The coach had about 36000 on it at the time. I did buy all new injectors...just haven't had the opportunity to install them yet.
