I always told my musical contemporaries, that if I were ever fortunate enough to get to collaborate with Lyle Mays, it would be a failure because every time he would play, I would stop to listen and would not be able to do anything but listen. What a treasure we had for awhile. His playing, compositions, and overall musical presence, would not just be a song, piece, or composition, but a spiritual journey, You never ended up in the same place you started and you would be the better at the end.

Thank you for this beautiful eulogy that is a poetic compliment to the harmonic lyricism of Lyle Mays’ musical heart and mind. His music was transcendent in so many ways, seeming somehow to create musical movement that hadn’t existed before. It expanded not through flash or “more” of anything, but through death and nuance and enrichment. As if he was unveiling beauty that has always been sitting right there before us, that we had somehow been unable to witness. Listening to Lyle’s music feels like growing soul.
@marra488710 ай бұрын
And thank YOU, Daniel, for your own poetic and heartfelt feelings on Lyle. It is one of the plus factors of social networking that we are able to share our passions for something that is more than you say, 'flash', or marketing. I saw Lyle a number of times in London; and only spoke to him once when outside the Shepherds Bush Empire gig from the 'Imaginary Day' album; a few of us asked him when he was going to do another solo album: 'A few months, it's in gestation' he said. It was to be some 3 years before 'Improvisations for Expanded Piano' . The piece 'Let Me Count The Ways' , was surely influenced by the Elizabeth Barrett-Browning poem , 'How do I love thee', and is testament to what you call 'Listening to Lyle’s music feels like growing soul.' - thanks Daniel!

What a moving tribute to Lyle! Also, I'm looking forward to listening to those two links you've got here. I got to attend quite a few concerts with the Pat Metheny Group with Lyle, and I'd like to share two of my experiences if I may. The first one was when the group performed at Cafe 290 here in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia known as Sandy Springs. It was the first of two concerts I attended during the "First Circle" tour, and I got the last ticket available! Once there, I knew something special was going to happen. You see, I've been totally blind my whole life, and nothing influenced and inspired me more than music, and I felt I had to attend this concert, because I believed it would have a life-long impact, and did it ever! I'd just taken two years of Advanced Placement Music Theory in high school and was now in college wanting to fulfill my dream of having a music career, or as I called it a Music Ministry. When the First Circle came out, I tried to figure out the rhythm, because I loved a challenge. After much effort, I had my twin sister, Maggie, write it down on a napkin. Now I play totally by ear, but my real strength is singing. Braille music was cumbersome and out-of-date at the time, but it's finally been updated to "modern" standards. So I believed the song was in 18/8 time, signed it with Maggie's help and passed it down through the audience to Pat. At the end of the set, after a brief introduction, Maggie told me he picked up the napkin. He read my name, (and by now, my heart is racing). He asked me to stand up and be recognized. Then he asked me how sure was I that it was 18/8? I told him that I thought I was probably off by a few beats, but I hoped I was close. To this day, he has told me I came closer than anyone else to getting it correct and that it was 22/8 or 11/4. Then, the shot in the arm I needed came! You see, my father and his family were completely against me going into music, because they thought I'd wind up a drug addict or a sexpot, as he put it, and that I needed to have "a sensible career," as Grannie put it. My mother secretly supported me, but she was afraid of my dad, because he was very abusive and violent. I believe Pat saw how enthusiastic and fearful I was, and he told me to keep up the pursuit of my dream, because he could see that I loved music. I've been singing since I was six years old, and I'm working my way back to the keyboard after having had a traumatic experience with my dad and having a complete mental breakdown in 1980. It was Pat Metheny's and Lyle's music that restored my faith, and I believe Lyle's inspiring me from above to getting back to the piano. On a final note, I forgave my father, and he's still alive today. We talk whenever we can, and I believe it's because of the song "If I Could" that I was able to relinquish the anger and deep sadness I felt over those years. Thank God for Pat, Lyle and all those they both influenced through the years, and I'm sure Pedro Aznar would agree. I love his tribute to Lyle, and I'd love to meet him and Pat, whom I've been trying to meet since 1982 and shake his hand. Thank you for letting me share. I'll share the second experience, with your permission, and I'll try not to make it quite as long. Thank you.

What a magnificent tribute to the incomparable Lyle Mays, that beast on the piano with the most gentle of souls. I imagine that his piece Close To Home was his exploration of existence in another dimension, into heaven. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times snd he was always shy, self deprecating, and extremely kind and quiet letting Pat take the spotlight perhaps comfortable with being the backbone, the tempo of them forming that double helix of musical DNA that gave birth to so many complex and unforgettable classic masterpieces. Lyle, the wind beneath Pat’s wings. The Way Up and The First Circle standing with Beethoven, Ellington, Sowande, Mozart, Quincy, Peterson, Montgomery and other greats. Lyle had such extreme talent and was also private and mysterious. I am so glad to have experienced hid sublime art and creativity in his time. Listening to his work with Pat always brings a tear to my eye, always so tasteful, perfectly complementing the surrounding musical ambience. Always adding to it, but never overstated. I could go on but I'd rather just listen to him, and words don't do him justice.

Lovely tribute, perfect it be done in poetic style, reflecting Lyle’s poetic expression. It was more than the rhythm, the harmony, the prodigious technique - it was his conception, his imagination (as you noted right off the bat), his ability to carry the listener to a rarified soulful dimension. And how he lifted and complimented Pat’s musical soul…miraculous!! 🙏🎵👏🏼
