Very nice press, guys! Small but heavy and very strong. I use it and it's great. It works very well. Very good finish. It's my favorite second single stage press. It's a quality product and it's worth all the money I paid for it. You can easily carry it with you if you need. For sure it'll last years and years. Thanks very much Gavin, but next time you show us a press please turn it in front of the "audience" and not in front of you. Regards from Genoa.

I purchased one of these and the ram would drag along the front side of the press body, leaving marks vertically on the ram. I called Lyman and they sent me a replacement ram, even though I express that I thought it was a flaw in the body, not the ram. The new ram arrived in about a month from the call I placed. The new ram had huge burrs around the primer drop exit hole so large that it wouldn't allow the ram to pass through the ram hole in the main press body. I had to file all the burrs away to allow it to fit and I still experience the same drag when the ram is raised. I purchased the press to be a dedicated depriming press, which it will still serve as, but the motion is not smooth because of the drag.

I just bought my first press. Lyman Ideal. I'd have to say it's named correctly. After buying a beautiful sporterized Persian Mauser in 8-06, I searched all over for reloading dies, and only found one set, across the country in Quebec. (Too difficult getting stuff across the border from the states.) Got my RCBS dies and couldn't wait to try them out, so picked up my press, a bag of 30-06 brass, a box of Nosler 200 grainers, and she works smooth as silk. One stroke and the necks fit those 8mm projectiles perfectly!

This open frame "C" design pre-dates the Lee press by decades. If you look back into your reloading history, you'll see that there is not much new under the sun. This is a refinement of a very old design. I doubt very seriously you will be breaking the cast iron crank on this puppy the way I broke the cast aluminum crank/handle on the Lee. (BTW, Lee replaced the part upon request.)

Yep, this press will last for sure.

@@bixby9797... Some LEE "C" frame models were inferior in workmanship. They were made of some soft metallurgical material causing them to break. Kind of a soft pot metal. Shoot lots and stay safe.

This powder thrower is terrible. I purchased it to use for load development. Tried 4 different powders, trying to throw 3.0 - 6.0 gn. It is so inconsistent, it’s all over the place with over 1gn variation every throw. The handle binds because it’s poorly machined, and the powder chamber has no nut or wrench flats so it comes loose and can’t be tightened. The o-ring in the chamber traps powder. The only thing I liked was the ability to remove the body without unscrewing it from the stand. I returned it, I couldn’t make it work after multiple cleanings, multiple powders, various tap, tap-tap etc techniques. It’s junk.

Would you consider showing your videos on The Reloaders Network instead of KZbin ?
@michaelstann33906 жыл бұрын
Okay I've been watching your videos for a little while. My father just got a whole bunch of books about reloading and also several containers of gunpowder. Now I need the actual equipment. What should I get for the budget-minded first-time reloader.? I would love to have a multi-stage Pres. But I'm sure you're going to say get a single stage. But what brand would you suggest?
@GunFunZS6 жыл бұрын
I don't know what he would say, but I would say skip the training wheels. You will be so much happier with at least an auto indexing turret, and the money is almost the same. You are way more likely to stick with reloading if it doesn't take 4 times as long for no good reason. The learning process is the same, just take out the indexing rod.
@GunFunZS6 жыл бұрын
FYI, I would suggest either Lee Classic 4 hole turret - the one which allows full length rifle. Or the Lee Loadmaster. I am very happy with the latter. Once you are reloading, you will probably notice deals on used equipment, and it is nice to have a single stage or two or a turret off to the side somewhere. That means you can keep your main press set up and do things like small runs, pull downs, etc. on the side press. The new lee entry level progressive is kinda neat, but it has a lot of plastic in it, and some kinda clumsy ergonomics. IMO I would skip it for the loadmaster, or stick with the long frame 4 hole turret. Get a good scale and some calipers. $15 Chinese digital calipers are more than good enough- several of the reloading companies have the most common model with their sticker on them for a mark up to $45, and it's a scam. Don't get a dodgy digital scale, or the weird lee scale. You need to be able to trust the reading.
@michaelstann33906 жыл бұрын
GunFun ZS man I really appreciate your advice. I was looking at that Lee 50th anniversary press. And thanks for the advice about the caliper and scale. I seriously can't wait to get started reloading. I've been saving brass for a while now. I'm about to buy a cleaning Tumblr just to get ready and get all my brass cleaned. Very exciting. Again thank you
@michaelstann33906 жыл бұрын
GunFun ZS hey I was just looking that up. The Lee 4 hole turret. That's not a bad price at all. I just glanced at one that was at Midway. A little over $100 is that correct? I'll have to look more into it but I think I might add that to my cart. LOL
@GunFunZS6 жыл бұрын
This is the model I was talking about. leeprecision.com/4-hole-classic-turret-press.html Note the model number. Midway shows lee model numbers too. They offer a nearly identical press which is a little shorter and works great for 223 and pistol cases, but doesn't clear all rifle cases when rotating with the bullet. I mistakenly helped my friend get one of those used for 308 win, and it is annoying to place the bullet. Still WAY less annoying than the extra operations you have to do to for single stage. Each time you touch a thing, it takes a few seconds, and you have a chance to make a mistake. Fewer operations = higher quality, and seconds add up fast when you are doing things by the hundred or thousand.

I agree with Ron. But only because Lyman hasn't made a press that is made well enough to warrant buying in the last 20 years. They have shown nothing but poor quality, and poor quality control. Maybe they have made a turn, but I doubt it.
@AkA-me-Kenny26 жыл бұрын
gavintoobe I started out with a Lyman All American Turret press, the only short coming was the steel won the aluminum part wore out. A great press and I often ask Lyman to re introduce it back into their line-up. I then went to a "beefy" single stage and then to a "beefy" Turret press each one Lyman and all rather expensive! What I think Lyman may be doing, is trying to get new clientele into the sport with a cheaper line. I guess I shouldn't have knocked it but, why taut Beefy and size is better all these years, and now this piece of junk? Oops, there I did it again. I wager a guess no reloader will be satisfied for long!
