I often see bland, loosely cohesive cells and somewhat polygonal cells in the background of lymph node samples. I have heard these referred to as macrophages or dendritic histiocytes. What significance are they? Some samples have greater amounts and I generally view these as benign finding. Thanks....

when you say polymorphous, do you mean variation of lymphocyte size or admixed leukocytes other than lymphocytes? Or, do you mean all of the above? thanks! I get a lot out of your pathology/cytology lectures!

Hello! Thank you for your kind comment! Yes I mean variation in lymphocyte size. There is a recently published book which details a lot of these principles, it is called "Practical Diagnostic Approaches in Non-Gynaecologic Cytology" www.springer.com/gp/book/9789811529603
