She's a pretty divisive character overall, due to her many, many mistakes over the 8 seasons, but ultimately, she was still one of my all-time favorite characters from this show (probably due to the amazing performance by Felicity Huffman). She was so compelling and real, I couldn't help but fall in love with her journey to find happiness in a life full of chaos. It's honestly extremely relatable!

He was a fool but that isn't an excuse to be abusive.she punched him in the face in the pilot episode. She got him fired. She often manipulated and played games. Him being a man child is a reason to divorce but never a reason to hurt a spouse. We would never accept a man punching a woman in her face and getting her fired. Why are we excusing her? Equality means women go to jail for domestic violence too.

@судокудоку Are you arguing it's ok for women to hit men? That wanting equality where women have the same rules to not commit assault makes a woman a pick me? Equality means we are not led by our emotions and that we have the same self control as we expect from men. I'm a feminist. I simply don't infantilize women and excuse their abusive actions. She should have divorced or seen a therapist rather than hit. Even my 6 year old grandson knows it's not ok to hit just because you have big feelings. If a man hit a woman on TV even after she said something stupid you would be up in arms...as you should be hecaise domestic violence is not funny. So expect the same discipline from women. Only people without real arguments go to name calling. Grow tf up.

@@citydweller99so it's her fault he was immature? Come on. Even Tom acknowledges several times that Lynette is the one holding the family together. People like Tom and Lynette often find each other in real life, all the time. He needs someone who takes the reins and be a replacement for his mom, and she needs someone who tolerates whatever bullshit she puts him through. It's always so easy to blame the woman for the man's own shortcomings, but Tom is an adult and he doesn't always act like one, not because of her.

Lynette is one of the best characters in Desperate Housewives. Unfortunately, the writers liked to pretend that Tom was the greatest husband on Wisteria Lane (even had an episode where she admits that she doesn't think she deserves him), despite the fact that Tom was a whiny baby and the two were a terrible match. Much like Gabrielle and Carlos (fuck Carlos, he is the worst).

It’s not Lynette who goes back and forth between wanting to be a SAHM and career woman, it’s Tom who keeps going back and forth, forcing her to balance out his choices. He‘s the one who decides he wants to be a SAHD (yet still forces her to do the housework), then goes back into business, then decides to become a pizzeria owner, and so on. As for her „controlling who he talks to“, she‘s not doing that. HE is the one who keeps it a secret from her that he is working with his ex, and he also has cheated on every girlfriend we know of (on Annabelle with Lynette, on Lynette with Rene and arguably with the woman he sees during their „trial separation“) AND he also keeps it a secret that he‘s been eying the nanny, and HE‘s also the one firing her after trying to look up her blouse when she‘s working. If anything, Tom’s the one who finds that the grass is always greener on the other side.
@PosiTVty.
@PosiTVty. 4 күн бұрын
That’s a completely fair observation. I tried to focus more on Lynette’s decisions rather than Tom (bc I’d just end up ranting about him lol), but I didn’t mean to imply that she is the one choosing to go back and forth all these times. You are right: it is generally Tom who shakes up the lifestyle (quitting, pizza place, back to school, etc.) *But* I do still think Lynette struggles with the balance of each of these lives, and feels split between each of them. In season 5, she’s the one who wants to get back into advertising, and in season 2, she herself states that work would be paradise for her as she’d be away from her children, but then immediately feels she’s missing out once it begins. I think they both struggle with dissatisfaction, just Tom is much more overtly destructive to their relationship and family. None of this is blame, btw. I think Lynette’s reactions (for the most part) are completely reasonable to her situation, and she’s one of my favorite characters! I respect the hell out of her! I certainly could not have gotten through what she had.

@@PosiTVty.You make really fair points but she has also been very destructive to his career which then has an affect ln the family overall. She caused him to lose 2 job promotions. Then at the end when he works for Carlos she convinces him to quiet and go work for someone else bc he will be paid more. After it happens he is at home less and instead of her going back to work for Carlos or in advertising she decides to help Renee then complains when she is regarded as a plus one in Tom's world.
@idayan
@idayan 4 күн бұрын
finally someone gets it! I know she has had some toxic behavior, but to me it was all a self defense reaction to the Tom's unreasonable behavior. He would lie to her on multiple occasions, and even if he didn't really cheat with his coworker or ex, he still lied to her which already is a concerning behavior for someone who is obviously having a hard time adjusting to being a mom of 4 (kids that she initially didn't want to have). And honestly, in real life a lot of wives would file for divorce after the events with Kayla and Nora. The way she supported him and put her own needs on wait EVERY TIME he asked her, while still having his back when he failed is heroic behavior to me. I just feel Lynette is the character that shows a lot of women's fate when they marry a "Tom". The only difference is in the series she has enormous patience and love, while in real life Toms often end up alone or with someone as lame and purposeless as they are.

In reality Lynette wouldn't even have discussed her being pregnant again. She'd just go get it taken care of. I have a friend who is a gynecologist and said the majority of the abortions he does are for married women who already have 2+ kids and they don't have the financial means to bring one more child into the family or they cannot stop work again to take care of a new baby. I cannot remember why Lynette got pregnant again, where was the family planning? Why didn't Tom get a vasectomy, or did he get one and it didn't work? It's been almost 20 years and I cannot remember this show. I just hate that she had more kids. He was whiney and wanted to keep changing his mind about his career and their life every 5 seconds, and then Lynette is just expected to roll with the punches and change everything for Tom’s whims of the month. Him going back to school to learn Chinese, the whole sports car situation, the garage band, deciding to be a SAHD. Tom and Lynette are people who make perfect sense on paper. One is a laid back, overall more passive person, who doesn’t really know what they want and have a hard time taking control of things. The other is a take charge, has a thirty year life plan, can point you in the right direction and get shit done kind of person. In theory they compliment each other. In reality the more dominant personality ends up resenting the other when they end up responsible for everything and with an ever growing amount of responsibilities. The more passive person becomes resentful because even though being like the other may not be what they want, seeing the person next you constantly succeed and have power over you, will make them feel less then. When these kind of people come together it’s important for both to learn how to be more independent and let the other person do so as well.

People hate her because it's easy to sympathize with the people affected by Lynette's actions. Especially if you have a naggy mom or a controlling spouse. But I find it interesting to put oneself in Lynette's shoes. For a show called "Desperate Housewives", a lot of the everyday struggles of being a housewife are channeled through Lynette. Gaby, Brie and Susan are usually involved in unusual drama, vengeance, murder, etc. But most of Lynette's stories come from everyday challenges of a suburban mom. Not being prepared to deal with three ADHD boys, giving up her career for motherhood, having an incompetent husband (we love Tom but, boy was he dumb sometimes!), and generally feeling unsatisfied with a life that was supposed to be idyllic. Because that's the point of the show. You see these perfect gardens, these nice houses, these beautiful families, and you can't imagine how screwed up and unhappy those people can be. For this, I often feel bad for Lynette, even if she's often wrong. At least she's no Susan...

We have so many different variations of contraception to prevent unplanned pregnancies. Condoms, birth control, IUDs, depo injections, nexplanon arm bar, plan B, and most importantly ABSTINENCE. If you aren't ready to be a mother and failed to use diligent contraception, there is always adoption. Our schools are too sex positive. If you want to keep children out of trouble, keep them busy with afternoon activities such as sports, drama club, or music lessons. Each state has their own regulations for abortion. If you want an abortion that badly, you can travel to a different state. You can still have an abortion if there are medical complications where the mother or the baby's life is at risk, or in cases of rape.

I found myself relating to Lynette the most. People who experience that high amount of trauma do have control issues and it takes a long time to heal from that. I did not like how Season 7 ended and I thought Season 8 was all about hating Lynette from the writer's end. So, seeing this video affirming and elevating her is comforting. It took me a long time to watch Season 8 because Marc Cherry's misogyny towards working women just became too evident for me to continue. I think Tom was a petulant child who expected more out of Lynette unrealistically and expected her to mother him too much. People blame Lynette because they don't like career-driven women and cannot sympathize with the reasons why she is like that because it's all about the altar to the penis and not about the sacrficial lamb on that altar killed against her will. I didn't like how Season 8 was all about ragging on Lynette and not ragging on Tom. Everyone seemed to take Tom's side, and the murder cover up ampified that. It makes sense the group didn't stay connected because while they had a resolution, the feelings that arouse that tested and broke the friendship already made themselves known.

She had to fire a good nanny because Tom couldn’t keep it in his pants. Lynette found out Tom had a secret family and when the mom died had to take care of that child too. When Tom suddenly wanted to have a pizza place and she supported him, couple years later he wanted to SELL the pizza place. Buy an RV, and travel around the world and said that now that was his dream. There’s probably a lot more, I haven’t seen the show in a while. But I hate how she had to put things aside for his sake.

I haven't watched the whole series yet, last thing I remember was the episode with her mom and stepdad. I do remember though when it came to her and Tom it seemed like she was made out to be a badguy even when she was the one having to go without or having to sacrifice. She was "allowed" to try and go back to work but she had a lot more obstacles to contend with than Tom. She was punished more harshly about being a "bad parent" for not being around as much and as for the home stuff the standard she had to meet was mountains above the way Tom took care of things. I remember genuinely thinking that Tom just didn't care about her.

I can’t wait for the Susan video, because that’s going to be a lot to unpack! 😂 Are we also going to get a Mary Alice, Katherine, and Edie video as well?

Blame Tom, blame Lynette, I don't really care. If I watch Desperate Housewives, I just fast forward through their scenes. They're both habitual liars sniping endlessly at each other in a prison of their own making.

I had no idea people hated her because she is relatable. There are so many Lynette scavo in this world. However, I am rewatching the série from the beginning and I forgot how I hated her husband.

It's hard to feel bad for Lynette bc if you watch the complete series you see that it's not just Tom she has a problem with. Most of the men don't want to date her bc she is controlling and manipulative. Not to mention the whole reason they got separated to begin with was because Lynette was upset by Tom's success. She couldn't even let him decorate an office. If she was really that miserable then she should have followed through with a divorce instead of trying to win Tom back.

She is probably my favorite housewife in the show (my toxic trait is my favorite character being Karl Mayer), so I really disliked how the writers presented her and Tom’s reconciliation as *her* responsibility. That she was the only one who needed to do some self-reflecting and start making changes. But Tom was just as culpable (let’s be real, it’s mostly him) in the dissolution of their marriage and had a lot of work to do on himself too.

Lynette and Tom have the worst resumes. They have quit all their jobs in a moment's notice. They had different jobs in almost every season.

While this was a very interesting video (it's always fun seeing others' point of view!), I can't say I agree with it. I don't think Lynette had any evolution. All her problems always stemmed from the same things: her husband (yeah, we hate Tom in this house), but also her need for control and her constant dissatisfaction with her life. I can understand how these could create problems for the first few seasons (you can't unlearn years of coping mechanisms in a week), but she NEVER learns any lessons from her mistakes. Your video shows it: she makes mistakes, then she scrambles to fix them and you think she learned something from it... until she turns around and does the exact same thing again. I can appreciate her trying to fix things, but my compassion stops when this happens for the 100th time. Truth is, Lynette was the worst written character of the show. The premise was good (highly career-oriented woman who fell for the wrong man - someone who was more interested in "breaking" her, into satisfying his ego by making her give up the things she loved so he would feel more important, rather than find the traditional/submissive wife he obviously wanted - and is dissatisfied and exhausted by her life). This would have made for a few good seasons. The problem is, she never goes past this. It's obvious the writers didn't now what to do with her character beyond that so they kept her in this loop for the entire show. Her pregnancy is proof of that: there is NO WAY in real life that a woman like her would have kept that child. Which is a shame because that could have made for a good storyline... Her ending should have happened much earlier imo: divorce Tom, go back to the workforce and her struggles could have been navigating her wanting to succeed, wanting to be there for her children and co-parenting with Tom. There were so many options the writers could have chosen, and they didn't because they didn't really want to evolve.

Yes agreed...she was manipulative best..Tom tries his best but she alwaus has this competitive side...if things went so well and it isnt because of her but other people she will find ways to sabotage it....if things go well it shld be bevause of her....and this character really ticked me off...she going her ways to get Tom fired was one of the worst

I didn’t feel completely sorry for Lynette. Tom at heart is a really good guy. He’s a good family man. A good provider and he tries to do his best. Lynette makes up accusations. She comes out of the blue with hysterics and she’s very judgmental. So she’s no angel.
