Lynn Tries CDL Skills Test! (Class B Truck)

On this episode of Wandering Wagners, we wandered to Mike's work, Trainco Truck Driving School, so that Lynn could try her hand at the skills portion of the Class B CDL test!
I just wanted to practice the skills portion before even getting my permit, or learning the pre-trip portion of the exam, simply because if I felt the skills were too difficult that I would just forget the idea all together.
I don't foresee myself using the CDL, but you never know, so I figured I'd give it a try! Plus, it's fun to challenge yourself occasionally with something new. Not to mention, I can show other Women that driving bigger vehicles doesn't have to be scary.
We arrived at the school and jumped into their "Students Driver" Class B straight truck and went on to the driving range to try out straight line backing, Reverse Lane Change (offset), Parallel parking, and alley dock.
I was able to perform all of the maneuvers without hitting any cones! That I honestly didn't see coming! I thought for sure I'd at least touch 1 or something. I guess that's good news for my potential CDL test!
What did you guys think? Did I do well enough? I know I'm definitely not perfect (hello over-steering 😂), but Mike said I got 0 points so that's most definitely a passing score for the skills portion of the CDL!😁

Good job! Learn enough to drive your RV. They should block off the back window so you would have to use your mirrors when backing. You’re lucky to have the facility to practice.

I can drive and back the Wraith into campsites without issues but I shouldn't be using the window... But it was there😂 when I backup regular vehicles I only ever use the mirrors so at least there's that haha I'm very lucky to have that facility (and Mike as my personal teacher!)

Graduated Trainco in August... And I have to say thanks to Mike and all the guys out there for their great work (and patience) teaching. That was a great 3 weeks. I really enjoyed the experience. So much so that after I get my 3-4 years in driving truck I would love to sign on as an instructor. By the way: she did better on her first time than most of us did😄 For anyone thinking of getting your CDL Trainco is a great place to learn. The patience and encouragement Mike showed his wife here is exactly what you get there. In my experience.

Go for it! Next time try maneuvers with back window blacked out (all mirrors)… a bit more difficult, but more realistic.

You did great for not having a trainer show you how to do what you did. Just remember to use your mirrors, not look out the window. First of all make sure the mirrors are adjusted for you. Remember, the mirrors are your friends. You should be able to drive that motor home with no problem. Keep up the good work.

I used the mirrors a lot, and in my personal vehicles I ALWAYS and only ever used the mirrors but this was a bigger vehicle and there's no restriction on using them so why not LOL maybe next time but for my first try I was going to use everything at my disposal LOL😁

If I were you, I'd go get the CDL Class B. As a former Terminal Manager, Mike, I question penalizing any student forbidding them more than two "GOALS." We encouraged drivers (it was in our written safety training protocol) during initial training, that if you were at all in doubt, get out and look! (in fact, it was also a decal on the bottom of the mirrors!) I'd rather see a driver take time to look at all of the situation surrounding the vehicle than back into something and cause damage!! Lynn, I thought you did really well for your first time!!

I agree with you about getting out to look but on the test opening the door a third time is an automatic fail on the spot.

So did Mikey get a Hershey bar for being such a good teacher? You did a really good job Lynn. Now go get your Class A CDL so you never have to worry about it again. I read below that you are a horrible test taker. There are online practice tests that you can take that will be just like the test you take at the DMV or whatever they call it in Ohio. If you take them it should boost your confidence. In any event good job! Keep the good stuff coming.

Like Mike said get it now while you can. You did an awesome job driving. I gave up my license years ago and every once in a while wish I still had it. I did not have someone to let me know as rules updated and I did not follow all the changes so it was easier to not risk a violation on an update I did not know, like now with cell phones needing to be in a support even if it is turned off. You know you can do it so get it and it makes you more worthwhile to your job, be safe.

The CDL A backing was hard for me, so I decided to test out with a B, which was really easy. I only had a day to practice everything in a box truck. How many days did you train?

Twice. I passed my CDL test first try with 0 points in skills👏🏻 class b is definitely easier than A to me.

Great job Lynn! I drove dump trucks and tractor/low boy trailers for decade or so. I haven't driven with my current job in over a decade but have kept my license ( you never know). I figure it's good to still have in my back pocket. Lynn you will not have any problems

I see the name of the trucking school is Trainco. I work for Keller Trucking out of Defiance, Ohio and as far as I know anyone that wants to get their CDL and then drive for Keller goes to school through Trainco and then gets trained with a certified trainer before going solo. I’ve seen and driven past many of Traincos trucks and I’m happy to see that more people still love to get into driving truck.

As a Class C (box truck under 26,000 GVWR) driver for anyone else looking to get a Class C or B driving box trucks don't get into the habit of using the rear window on your training vehicle. The box truck you drive daily will gave a box on the back obstructing the view out the rear window if the truck cab even has one.

I live in a State where non-commercial Class A or B is required, as appropriate, for recreational vehicles. I personally think it should be universal versus the few States that require. I also had a CDL A and endorsements when a younger man. I think Lynn did great for just having at it! I would advise covering the cab window as mirror use is key, and at least in these parts you'd never test with such a truck. In my day, GOALs were emphasized, and I still do when towing, especially at 13'-5" tall and a little over 60' running length. Keep practicing and go for it if you want your CDL!

Yeah I figured for my first time, I may as well use the windows if they're there and I'll be testing in that truck. I used my mirrors as well but just to get that first alignment for the reverse Lane change I wanted to make sure I was over far enough. Maybe next time I'll not use the windows 😜

Nice job young lady. And Mike was very patient and supportive as you drove. My wife and I are both ex school bus drivers (she did it 25 years) but she prefers I maneuver our travel trailer around. That hinge in the middle complicates things. Lol.

Get your Class B get some experience and then get your Class A CDLs…. Always a good thing to have to fall back on !! There will always be a need for Commercial Drivers … Versus the uncertainties of Power Plants. I have my Class A CDLs to fall back on as I’m a Power Plant Worker myself also .. Good luck.

Great job Lynn! Its great to have 2 people that understand and are capable of driving the rig! I backup the rig into sites and hubby guides me with his great instructions. I get a lot of "Way to go girl" at campgrounds, but its all about the communication between us! We have both been driving Class A for 20+ years. Class A or B you have a great instructor I'm sure you do great at either!

Parallel parking took me about 3 tries, not used to parallel parking without a camera lol! But it's all about the rear wheel and turning all the way to the left or right when parking! And when you see you're inside the lines, then start straightening out

Yeah, Mike can do it without thinking. My brain can see what to do outside the vehicle but inside is different (with a truck and trailer that is) straight truck is much easier haha

I was 27 when I started driving truck (CRST) and my Dad was my lead driver and then co-driver for my first 3 years on the road. Dad started at CRST when I was 6 months old. Dad had 3 million safe miles under his belt when he retired (32 years at CRST). .

I say go for it all the way.I wish I could do the same thing,my dad had a single axle truck and I drove it and did the same moves you did but with one eye a bit to weak to pass the eye test I can not drive a tandem axle or tractor trailer but I do have my air brake endorsment.I am in New Brunswick,canada.

I just did class b passenger endorsement road test and passed. I had passenger endorsement permit and CDL A permit and since I took passenger endorsement on the 15th of February and passed they had to reissue CDL A permit and since they did that my permit issue date for CDL A is the 15th so now I have to go to a training class for the CDL A. Not cool since I had all permits well before.

I don't know how Ohio licensing works but in VA if you have a CDL and get a moving violation you aren't eligible for remediations like traffic school and dismissal rather than points on your license. No doubt the CDL skills are going to make a driver better though.

I have to ask before I'm not done with the video... but why is Lynn in a truck with the back axle is all the way at the end of the chassis? When she gets in the Wraith it will drive a little different! But Lynn you did fantastic for sure! You don't need a CDL to drive the wraith if you're wondering that. I've driven it before. This is the class B CDL truck they have at trainco to use and what I'd test in, for the class B CDL test so it's easier to practice in this truck. Don’t do it! Double points for moving violations and no remediation for tickets! Not necessary with the Wraith! The training is great, for info and experience, but not the license !

If you think you need the Class B, go for it. Funny, I used to be a debt collector for U.S.-TDS and collect on truckers who didn't pay their school debt or didn't work it off with a certain carrier! LoL

Mike I believe that there should be some sort of test for campers, from what I have seen over the years and especially recently some people need help. Just don't hand the keys to someone for a 30 -45 ft rig and say have a good time
