Saw Lynyrd Sknyrd with the Outlaws, July 2, 1976 at Hara Arena in Dayton Ohio. 2 days before the Bi-Centennial. There was this maniac up in the seats, throwing cherry bombs or M-80's into the crowd on the floor. F*ck. All of a sudden you'd see this flash, then hear a loudass BANG! Remember M-80's? After about 5 of em getting thrown in the crowd, Ronnie Van Zant stops the show. He said" Ok, i know its the Bi-Centennial, and all, but whoever is throwin the M-80's, you better quit or we're gonna quit playin for the night. And some people out there knows who's throwin em. If 1 more goes off, we're done!". Not another one went off. Haha. True story, i swear.
@bill29-g3b29 күн бұрын
I don't know if you'll read this but I was in Dayton for a season long ago and was talked into "crashing the gate" at the Hara Arena. It was Styx and Van Halen. We waited in the shadows and we all took off at the doors that were open. I ran inside and heard the bouncer yell "Hey!". I was booking it fast. He couldn't catch me. Then I ran slam into this big guy with two beers in his hands. It was like a still photo shot in my memory of his face looking at all that beer flying up in the air. I said, "Sorry bro" and hauled ass. I'd never done anything like that before.

I was only 17 years old when my mom told me there had been a plane crash and some people from Lynyrd Skynyrd had been killed. My heart sank when I learned who was killed. I never got to hear the original band perform and to this day I feel like I've missed something special. I'm convinced if Ronnie's IQ had been tested he would have been a certified genius. Though he couldn't play an instrument, his ability to formulate lyrics in his brain and recall them without writing them down combined with his ability to hear songs and arrangements and instruments in his head then make it all work perfectly is genius. Two years ago I was passing through Florida and realized I was going to be near the cemetery where the band is buried. It was only 45 minutes before the cemetery closed so I made a quick detour. After paying my respects at Ronnie, Leon and Billy's gravesites, I got into my car to go to the other graves. When the the engine started the radio was already on and the first sound out of it was the intro to Sweet Home Alabama. I literally started to chill and tears came to my eyes. It was almost like the guys were saying, "Thanks for coming by to hang out with us for a few minutes." "Fly on Freebird(s)".

Just a few short yeats later their plane would crash. "Give me back my bullets" would be redone with Johnny Van Zant and their new lead Ricky Meadlock. In 1986, Rick goes to town on that solo. I was always blown away by just how much talent these guys had. There has been some great southern rockabilly bands through the years, but nothing with the extensive "orchestrial" combination that Skynyrd put out song after song.
