I was only 17 years old when my mom told me there had been a plane crash and some people from Lynyrd Skynyrd had been killed. My heart sank when I learned who was killed. I never got to hear the original band perform and to this day I feel like I've missed something special. I'm convinced if Ronnie's IQ had been tested he would have been a certified genius. Though he couldn't play an instrument, his ability to formulate lyrics in his brain and recall them without writing them down combined with his ability to hear songs and arrangements and instruments in his head then make it all work perfectly is genius. Two years ago I was passing through Florida and realized I was going to be near the cemetery where the band is buried. It was only 45 minutes before the cemetery closed so I made a quick detour. After paying my respects at Ronnie, Leon and Billy's gravesites, I got into my car to go to the other graves. When the the engine started the radio was already on and the first sound out of it was the intro to Sweet Home Alabama. I literally started to chill and tears came to my eyes. It was almost like the guys were saying, "Thanks for coming by to hang out with us for a few minutes." "Fly on Freebird(s)".

Saw them in Chicago at the Super Bowl of Rock III - July 10, 1977. Ted Nugent, Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, REO Speedwagon, Journey and Rex. Will never forget what impact this had on my love of classic rock as a 17 year old. Still listening almost 50 years later!!!!

I had the privilege of attending 3 concerts. The concert in Tampa was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen Burned in my mind. God bless LS, RIP to those who lost their lives for Southern Rock Amen

JJ Cale wrote it then Skynyrd showed him how to play it. How to really play that song.

Maybe the BEST Skynyrd performance! Sure everyone loves Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama....but this song is tight...and look at that amazing crowd!
