Skynyrd was my band! Loved and still love Southern Rock. Been to their concerts all over the south. Don't remember this one at all. I saw them at the Tennessee State Fair and paid 6 bucks to get in. Then people just stormed the place and no one could control it. People were on the outside hanging off the fences to get a glimps. It was a wild night!

Now you should check out Jamey Johnson’s version.. It was on the Skynyrd Tribute and it’s pretty damn good.

This was a demo released on a box set. This is the first time I've heard it with the piano, organ, xylophone, n all other sounds. Sounded MUCH better with just Ronnie's voice and the slide guitar. Also Ronnie's voice had ALOT of chorus/reverb added to it in this version. Not the Four Walls of Raiford I know. Sounded odd. The demo version was much more raw and gritty and as far as the subject matter fit the song better. It's based on quite a few vets Ronnie and the guys knew...but a fictional story

You’ve got to listen to the only version that I’ve heard. The only instrument playing is the guitar with a slide being used. It’s way better. It is totally blues and you can hear Ronnie singing every word. It’s a gem, for sure. It’s from Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd released in 1998, also from the boxed set released in 1991 I believe. It’s worth the listen.

Ronnie co-wrote this, but it wasn’t released until after his death. The raw version, with his vocals and a dobro is best. I believe it was written about a real Vietnam vet in The area.

Beautiful haunting song and has been on my playlist for a while now. With this song, less is more and the thoughts and the story were as they should be. This wasn't done by the band...just Jeffrey S. Carlisi, Ronnie Van Zant, and Jack Daniels...maybe that's why you were feeling something was missing?
@RockN2Country5 жыл бұрын
@David Emswiler It might have been that, but I don't think it was the musicianship that made it feel lacking in some way. Next time I listen to it I'll pay attention to that aspect, since it could have been subconscious expectations of Skynyrd that fed my sense of lack.

Hi Don, I meant to comment the other day when I immediately saw this and watched. Distractions always happen😬 This song is one of my husband's favorites because of the starkness and simplicity. I like it, but it always makes me sad. Love my Skynyrd and Allman Brothers. Pam

This was more complicated than the original cut, which was Ronnie and one blues slide dobro played by Jeff Carlissi, I believe. Raiford is a tough, max security. Prison outside of Starke, Florida.

Doooode. I dunno where that overdubbed version with keyboard and electro harp came from, but it’s not the original. The OG is far more simplistic and raw.

I believe that this song was released years after the crash and the reunion as a "contract" album called "Legend" full of previously unreleased songs. Not a bad album either.

Never heard this version with all the added instruments. Gotta say I prefer the version with just him and the dobro. 😅

There’s an acoustic version that (in my opinion) is much better & makes the lyrics easier to hear. I’d also recommend (if you haven’t heard it) All I Can Do Is Write About It.

I'm going to have to deviate from the general consensus. Although I'm a huge Skynyrd fan, I don't like this song. I didn't like it when it came out and I don't like it today. Instead of making a statement it feels manipulative. They threw everything in there, Vietnam vet, medals, wife, children, God, wrongly convicted, suicide by cop. Sorry, I think there is a reason this song isn't well know.
@davidemswiler43515 жыл бұрын
Ouch!...But you do have some good points :-)
@tupelohoney6225 жыл бұрын
@David Emswiler , LOL...I do have a tendency to say what I think, like someone else we all know. ;-) If they had stuck with even Vietnam vet, wrongly accused and developed it I might give it a pass. This tries too hard, IMO.
