@andystransportchannel7784 On par equal to Allen? That's hilarious! For starters there isn't a person alive that is equal to Allen Collins when it comes to the solo on Freebird. To date Ed is probably the closest I've ever heard to playing it very close to Allen. Ricky isn't even half the guitar player that Ed King was & to say that Ricky went out of his way to play a similar guitar as Allen makes me scratch my head. It's the exact same model Allen used. Another thing is Ricky went on record to say he never wanted to play it exactly like Allen & truth be known it's because he couldn't anyways

Steve Gaines was the best guitarist to grace Skynyrd in my opinion. His lead and rhythm guitar playing, his songwriting skills, and his vocal skills lifted that band up and put them into a totally different stratosphere. Rest in Peace to everyone in the band. Only Artimus Pyle and Leslie Hawkins remain. So 😥 sad

Gary Rossington pushed himself to the max all on his own and as far as I 'm concerned he was the best and he was the sound of Skynyrd. Gary and Ronnie are Lynyrd Skynyrd. In 1987 I was working as a bouncer at a bar called Finkys in Daytona Beach ( now called Baja club I believe ) Ronny Van Zant was there's doing a meet and greet , I got the chance to talk to him and I told him about a friend of mine who was hit by a car when I was a freshman in high school seven years prior, she was in a coma for an extended period of time and her family would play her favorite song " FREEBIRD" over and over again until she woke from her coma At the end of the night he walked over to me and handed me a rolled up sheet of paper and told me to make sure my friend gets it. He had written her name at the top followed by the lyrics to freebird and signed it " from one survivor to another, Ronnie Van Zant "

You know everbody gives props to Ronnie of course and Steve, and Gary, and my personal favorite AC, but hear little in the way of recognition for Billy. Man oh man was dude talented. Made love to those keys. Alot of the backbone of some of their most played stuff is with Billy pounding that ivory. Whatever it was made of then, ivory I think.

One of the most memorable moments I ever had was to see the Rossington Collins band on their much abbreviated first tour. They did the songs from their first album and then they shined the spotlight on the microphone with Ronnies' hat on top and played Freebird just like here. It was so spooky and the place was so quiet you could here a pin drop.
