It's about Billboard's bullets: when a song is charting it has bullets. It's tongue & cheek about a song losing its place on the charts & the singer losing his "bullets" in life. Give it a listen again. Remember the song "18 With a Bullet?"

I've heard this story, and don't beleive it. I find it hard to believe Skynyrd were very concerned about chart success let alone enough to write a song about it.

@@Incomudro1963 “There’s two types of bullets. There’s a bullet from a gun and there’s a bullet on the trade magazines - that’s the way it was meant.” Ronnie Van Zant According to Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington in a 1992 Goldmine interview, this song is about the bullets Billboard charts use to signify a song is moving quickly up the chart. "It was about ‘Gimme Back My Bullets’ in the charts, not about guns. But I remember doing that in concert when it first came out and people used to throw 22 shells and shotgun shells at us when we did it a lot and we’d get hit all the time with them, so we had to drop the song from the set because we were getting hit by bullets so much. I’m glad they weren’t shooting and they were just throwing them, but, it was kinda funny.”
@hellscornalien82862 жыл бұрын
Great reaction! Many people make the assumption that Gimme Back My Bullets is about gun ammunition. It's not. It's about chart hits. They wanted their songs to be back on top. Bullets refer to the icon next to a song on the charts. Peace and love.

@@Incomudro1963 Then you've never listened to "The Lynyrd Skynyrd Story" with live interviews with the band recorded back in the 70's. The story came straight out of Ronnie Van Zant's mouth. The song was protesting against their record label trying to control their music. They also quit playing this song in concert because fans were bringing live ammo and throwing it on the stage during the song. It made walking very hazardous becaue the rounds would roll under their feet.

The song originally was misconstrued as being a song about gun rights, which is not correct. The "bullets" being referred to are bullets on a musical chart. It got so bad at one point that fans were throwing live ammo on the stage during concerts, so they didn't perform it for a while. Another time, a fan threw a record shard at the stage almost cutting the neck of Leon Wilkeson, the bass player. He then replied by firing a starter's pistol into the air, stunning the crowd. A Lynyrd Skynyrd concert circa 1976 could be a rowdy affair. LOL. The "pencil pushers" referred to at the end of the song by Mr. Van Zant are the record company executives, namely Alan Walden of Walden Associates in Macon, GA among others.

My favorite band. I love the line where he says, " you will not hear me cry, cause I do not sing the blues"!. I'm from Jersey City, yet the lyrics can be appreciated by Eskimos, if you exposed them to this band. I understand why they were originally kinda pigeonholed into the southern rock genre, but honestly they should be appreciated without labels. Their musicality alone sets them apart from other bands during their hay day. I grew up with some classically trained musicians, and although it took me quite awhile to get them to listen, once they did, I couldn't tell you how much praise they heaped on Skynyrd. Especially the virtuosity of the guitar players. They had all suffered from the ill conceived notion that southern rock bands were just country music with the volume turned up. Anyway, please enjoy your journey, and don't let anyone tell you what you should listen to, you might miss out on some good shit 👍🤔
