Listening to Skynard there is of course Ronnie on vocals but once and a while there is a male background singer that is my favorite Leon Wilkenson on Bass. On there song Workin for MCA there is a grouling sound in the beginning yes I'm proud to say thats Leon.. he was always layed back in the concert footage but a very intricate part of there legend

I was playing pool at a biker bar when I was 23. I tipped the current dancer right before her break, She sat down at my table -so I chatted with her. She never mentioned that her BF was in the bar and they were in an argument! He eventually had a knife to my throat. All I could think of was this song and the irony. She talked him down -I lived, but I learned to pay attention!

CCR was doing Prooud Mary at almost the same time. But I don't know who did it first Tina and Ike or Credence Clearwater revival.I looked it up and CCR did it in 69 and Ike and Tina did it in 71.Rare two bands of the same era using the same song. I love both versions and uncoincidenally they are all from the same area of the south. And probably were all influenced by the same stuff like you said Chuck and we know Tina comes from a gospel background.

This is the real deal. A beautiful black baby doll listening to some SKYNYRD. so cool. There's 2 or 3 doc./movies of Skynyrd and there's a music critic in one that said Ronnie VanZant was a genius, that he wrote many, many songs and 80 or 90% of them were hits. If you check out everything you can on Skynyrd, you will discover one of your top 3 favorite songs of all time.

This is actually a true story. Ronnie, Gary, and Allen went into this tavern called the "WT" West Tavern. Gary and Alllen were still teens and Ronnie was a few years older. But this girl came up to Ronnie and asked him to dance. Her name was not Linda Lou. That was the name of one of their grandmas...I think Allen's but not totally sure. The girl was trying to make her boyfriend jealous. So, her and Ronnie are out on the dance floor and the boyfriend walks in. He is this big BIG mean biker looking dude with big boots and leather jacket and carrying a .44 pistol!! He walked over and basically asked Ronnie..."hey, Wtf are you doing dancing with my girlfriend"? And he pulls out his gun and aims it at Ronnie circling him putting the gun to his head from behind. Ronnie was like..."hey, I don't know the girl. I didn't know she was your girlfriend. Please just let me leave, I don't want anything to do with your girlfriend." Well, the guy keeps at it with Ronnie and Ronnie finally says..."If you're gonna shoot me, you're gonna have to shoot me in the ass or elbow". He never said "three steps" and the place was small so "cuttin a rug" Ronnie put in for the song. "A place called the jug" was again for the song, although Im told that the jug was the name of it later on, and possibly in small letters under the "West Tavern" sign. Anyway, Ronnie started walking out, and the guy (with gun cocked) never shot him. Allen and Gary followed, and they wrote the song that night after they calmed down from what had just happened. Listen here as Gary Rossington recalls that night. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGfFqIF7jsZ5isk
