This song was from the first album (and sadly the last) after Steve Gaines joined the band. His influence and incredible guitar skills reenergized Skynyrd who were on the verge of sky rocketing to a whole new level of greatness. We can only dream of what might have been. Steve’s sister Cassie was one of the backup singers for LS and told Ronnie how good he was. Tragically, Ronnie, Steve and Cassie were all killed in the plane crash just weeks after the street survivors album was released. Skynyrd’s music has been the soundtrack of my life.

Randy Andrews Actually, "Street Survivors" was released 3 days prior to the crash. The original album cover had them with flames behind them but specifically Steve had flames right over his head as if engulfing it. They immediately blacked out the flames because Steve's wife was hurting and out of respect. If one owns an original album, it's worth something. And indeed Cassie kept after Ronnie to hear Steve. But most don't know that his actual audition was to go onstage at a concert and play 2 songs with them. "T for Texas" and "Call me the Breeze" I believe. Gary and Allen gave him about 5 minutes of instruction back stage. That's it! He came out near the end to play and plugged into Gary's amp. He didn't want to play like Gary and Allen so, he pulled out a slide. (Every good blues pkayer keeps a slide in their pocket). Well, he turned Ronnie's head immediately and stunned Gary and Allen. After, he went to where his band was and quit. He packed his bags and got on the bus that very night as a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Lynyrd Skynyrd rocks period. Live concert is a must. I recommend the live from Knebworth,they opened up for the Rolling Stones. Blew them off the stage.

Great reaction, as usual. Yes, as everyone else said, it was written about Gary Rossington, who is actually still in the band, touring. From a woman’s perspective, he was a CUTIE and had the face of an angel. “So they call you Prince Charming.” There is a black and white live version of this that I saw. One reason you don’t see many live versions of this because it was released on October 17, 1977 and the plane crash occurred on October 20th. Very sad.

lmgoss I am not exactly sure what inspired the..."now they call you prince charming" line. I can surmise from everything I have read and cross referenced that some of it was due to his shyness and "awe shucks" personality he displayed. But Gary has some attitude issues which came as a surprise to me as well. But the evidence bears that out if you know where to look. That b&w version of this song being an example. Gene Odom (Ronnie's body guard and best friend since childhood) hints about this. He talks about when Steve came on board, Ronnie loved him but Allen and Gary were not so accepting. And while in the studio one day while Steve was laying down some tracks, Gene told Allen and Gary that..."that ol okie (Oklahoma boy) is kicking y'all's ass in there and you two better step up your attitude and your game." Neither one wanted to hear it, but it was true and they finally did. But in that b&w version, when Steve gets to his first solo, watch as Gary steps back with a cigarette and puts two fingers to his mouth as if to take a drag. But....he is looking (glaring) right at Steve and it certainly looks as though he is saluting Steve with a birdie. So, I believe Ronnie put that line in there as sort of a..."you ain't foolin me with that awe shucks act". That's just my opinion based off countless research hours I have put in on the band. I know the whole court mess after the reunion was just ridiculous and too many egos and money hungry players involved including Judy. According to Gene, just days before the crash, he and Ronnie talked about some shake ups in the band. Gene had found out and told Ronnie that all the merchandising was being stolen. Ronnie was pissed and gonna fire several people. Guess we'll never know who.

Jay Heidemann, everything you say could very well be true. It wouldn’t tax my imagination to think that Gary and Allen would be jealous. After Ed King left the band, they were top dog. HOWEVER, from a 9 - 10 year old girl’s perspective, Gary and Artimus are SO PURDY. Don’t break this young girl’s heart. (Kidding, but not kidding). So, to me, that’s what it means. LOL. And Lord, they were purdy. Artimus is the reason I began to play drums.

The smell of death surrounds you!! Got the original Street Survivors album with them all in flames on the cover for Christmas 1977 ! Saw Skynyrd at JFK stadium in Philadelphia in June of 77 their plane crashed in October. I was devastated !!

Yes, the song is a warning shot aimed at really Ronnie himself and the entire band. But specifically Allen Collins and Gary Rossington each got in car crashes I believe it was labor day weekend or memorial day...can't remember. But both crashed their cars. Gary crashed his brand new Ford into an oak tree which still stands and bears the scar of that crash and others as it's been hit other times. Dangerous area to negotiate when on ludes, whiskey and whatever else he was on. Ronnie was pissed and fined both of them $5000 for their lapses in judgment. But in writing the lyrics, Ronnie clearly was irritated and sending a message to Gary..."prince charming" and "the smell of death surrounds you" to "say you'll be allright come tomorrow. But tomorrow might not be here for you" ("yeah you"). And on live shows even today Johnny will turn and face Gary at the "prince charmimg" part. But Ronnie also wrote that from some self perspective too which is what gives that song so much power and meaning. Ronnie was as Ed King put it..."a raw genius". As a musician, I can tell you what was also truly amazing about Ronnie is he never wrote anything down..ever! That is incredible! As for the guitars on this song, this was a masterpiece. To this day I have still not heard not even one guitarist duplicate Steve Gaines' solos on this song. They can play the notes, but not one can touch that special rhythm he had. You can really tell on the live versions of the song. One on b&w done in Jersey I believe and the other in color and their last recorded performance from Sacramento. And they also had a certain riff/run after each "ooh that smell"..riff..can't..." that without Steve and Allen they and nobody can duplicate that groove. It's very subtle but it gives the song edge. Today's version of Skynyrd plays this down a half to a whole step and they play that riff straight. Lacks that punch. With Steve on board and the "street survivors" album, we got a tease of what greatness they were about to go to. Ronnie knew it too. "That Smell" is my fav because of Steve Gaines and what he brought to them. I miss that original line up.

Also search for Rossington Collins Band. They had just released their first album which was an excellent one but Allen wrecked his car (1986) which killed his girlfriend and paralyzed him. Since he couldn't tour to promote the album, the record company just let it fade into the background and didn't promote it at all.

@@suecook1326 . Actually Rossington Collins Band put out 2 albums. Allen left group due to friction between him and Gary and Dale Krantz. Allen started his own band called Allen Collens Band recruiting Randall Hall who actually Allen picked to take his place on Tribute Tour. Crash happened a little after that. Respect.

The guitar players Gary Rossington and Allen Collins both almost died on the same day in different vehicle crashes. They both wrecked because of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Gary was the one that hit the oak tree head on as referenced in the opening lyrics. Ronnie wrote this song while those two knuckleheads was in the hospital recovering from their injuries.

My fav was always On the Hunt ...Grew up in same neighborhood as most of these guys. Best concert I ever saw was them live here at the Jacksonville Colosseum. The 2nd best show I ever saw there ( and I saw all the greats ) was oddly enough by an Australian Band called Skyhooks. A group of us went to see Uriah Heap, who was always sold out in Jacksonville. Skyhooks opened for them and was absolutely phenomenal. People in my group were saying that they were like a cross between Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Kiss LOL. I particularly remember Love is not good enough, Love on the radio and Saturday night which live def has a Skynyrd vibe. Would love you to review the Skyhooks songs and give an Awesome Australian band some props. Oh ....Skyhooks completely blew Uriah Heap off the stage.

I have always been a big fan of Skynyrd and thought them to be a highly underrated band. I think the lyrical content fits great with the music, and it paints a dark picture of the struggles of addiction. With regards to the musical performance, it is a masterpiece of the blend of excellent drums, bass and three guitar solo tapestry. The solo near the end with the two guitars playing off each other to me evokes the good/bad side struggle of wanting to give in to and wanting to quit the substance in question. Also the very last guitar note that holds out and the end of the song makes me think of a heart monitor ringing out a flat line signal, indicating the loss of the battle with addiction. Probably thought way too much into the song but there you go. Lastly, within a week of the release of the album with this song on it, the band had a fatal plane crash killing 3 members and severely injuring others. The album cover showed the band engulfed in flames and was later changed after the crash. That also adds an extra eerie vibe to the song. Enjoyed the video, thanks for posting!

Yes, this song was from a personal standpoint resulting after Gary Rossington crashed his Ford Torino into an oak tree on Mandarin Road in Jacksonville, FL. If you're ever in north Florida, you know about the huge live oak trees we have here. Ronnie wrote that song as a warning of drinking and drug use then driving. If you enjoy Skynyrd, you should give VanZant a listen to. Brothers Donnie (.38 Special) and Johnny (took over for Ronnie in Skynyrd) come together on several CDs. Both have the same singing style as Ronnie. CDs Brother to Brother and VanZant II are awesome. Get Right with the Man and My Kind of Country have more of a country western vibe and did really well on the country charts although true southern rock fans love them all.

"Oak tree you're in my way".. their plane went down in a MS pine forest, soft trees.. the responders in a documentary said if it had not hit a lone hardwood oak tree standing there by itself, which buckled the plane and cut it in half, good chance they (band up in the 1st Class half), would have lived. RIP Ronnie, Steve and Cassie and the others.

I saw the Ronny Lynyard Skynyrd band in concert live twice. I had already bought my ticket for the 3rd show, but the plane crashed one week before that show. The band was awesome on stage. I feel so luck to have seen this band play live 2 times.

That was one awesome band and that was truly one of the saddest days of my life, when I woke up to the news of the plane crash. The band that would not play again and the show I would not see.

With only Gary Rossington left from the original band (anyone including Ricky is a joke) the ones that have passed can not be adequately replaced.They have always said, this band is a tribute band to the original band. As popular as the "tribute band" has been through the years, I wonder how big the original band would have become. Ronnie's Skynyard popularity and stardom was going straight up, when the plane when straight down. Sad to think what may have been, but never was.

You ever met a drugged out street bum, strung out on some serious hardcore drugs for God knows how long? I live downtown and guard a public restroom where needles show up all over the place. The smell of death really DOES surround those kinds of people. And when it's someone you know who's going down that road, it's a hell of a feeling. So yeah, this was absolutely a song Ronnie wrote for the members of his band. Particularly Gary, aka "Prince Charming" to the girls.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is a great band, but now a little direction on which way to expand your exposure to southern fried rock. 38 Special is a good one, the lead singer is Donnie Van Zant, Ronnies little brother and whom eventually moves over to Skynyrd somewhere in the 90's or early 2000's. As for which song(s) .... Like Skynyrd there are no bad ones Blackfoot is another, I would suggest "Train, Train' or 'Highway Song' to start with. The lead singer and one of the guitar players is Randy Medlocke who also joins Skynyrd in later years. Molly Hachet is the third and for me personally a 2 hit wonder but many people love them. Start with 'Flirtin With Disaster'

Tuesday’s Gone by Lynyrd Skynyrd. My best friend named his daughter Tuesday after that song. Lol. He also “borrowed “ my Greatest Hits of Lynyrd Skynyrd & it STILL hasn’t found its way back to me. Yes this is a song based on a true story, and just the pitfalls of dope and alcohol when your famous. Ronny Van Zandt (Lead singer) had his own demons. His was mostly with Alcohol. The dude was notorious for getting blasted drunk, and then picking fights...with members of his own Band! On the night of a concert, just before going on stage Van Zandt smashed a Beer Bottle into a jagged edge, and went up to Gary Rosington and slashed his hand and wrist for no reason, and yelled "you'll never play guitar again you SOB. He actually went out and played the concert with that bloody and swollen bandaged hand. It healed up, but that's crazy. Ronny Van Zandt was actually a really good guy, but when he drank, he could turn into a totally different person. We all know people like that. John Bonham (drummer/Led Zeppelin) was exactly the same way. I got all this stuff from a documentary from HBO posted on youtube. You can probably find it. It also tells the entire Lynard Skynard story from their beginings in High School, until their story ends with the terrible plane crash that killed 4 of the Bands members.

My favorite Skynyrd, that I listen to, after 40 years, are not the hits, like you are listening to, I like POISON WHISKEY and THING'S GOIN' ON off the first album, and an album called LEGEND, they released of their earlier stuff, kinda raw, I like WINO and COMING HOME, but my favorites are probably MISSISSIPPI KID and MADE IN THE SHADE, after all these years. enjoy
