Thanks for doing what you do. I'm a 53 yo broadcast engineer by trade but educated as a computer electronics technologist. I've been interested in the mechanics of pinball machines since the 1980's but have never had the opportunity to see the in-depth workings that you provide in your videos. One thing I think you might consider is showing a side-by-side before and after of when Joe cleans the playfield so we can all admire the difference. Keep up the great work!

Even though you might this it is repetitious, I finally got the most understanding from this vid where you explained the spider and score reel relay switching. I think you do an excellent job of keeping these interesting. Thanks for all you do!

It is repetitive, but the way it kind of works is we pick up new subscribers constantly. About 50 a day usually.... and we also have regular viewers get bored and kind of leave for awhile all the time too, so while there are plenty of people who watch all the videos and have been for a long time, we also have new people all the time who haven't seen any of this so it all works out. Thank you for watching macDaddyns!

Glad to see this one coming back to life. I love the old EM games. I think I'd leave the backglass as is on this too, but maybe if desperate to fix it up a bit, redo just the red with a stencil and a very light red spray, but that could end up looking a bit splattered or not transparent enough.

There was a version of this same machine with "digital" sounds. Until about 12 years ago I owned one of them. It was only 2 player max. If you think the chimes sound bad, you should have heard the early synthesizer sounds. Ug.
@EsotericArctos
@EsotericArctos 2 жыл бұрын
I think that was a remake of this game, or re-release. The EM version was definitely released earlier than the Solid State version, but I totally agree. Early solid state sounds were awful. They often tried to copy the chime sounds in an electronic version and these days it is just a bit cringey. At the time it was cutting edge though.

Unfortunately Joe, you are missing a very crucial switch that is supposed to be attached to the match unit. Hence, the cut wires. The switch rotates the two “When Lit” top roll over switches during gameplay. That switch also rotates the bottom “Special Lites” when you achieve special. Depending on how you have it set up, the special awards a free game or extra ball.

These are arcade games, but I've always thought Takumi's games were the crown champion of score inflation. Score on the coin-op version of Mars Matrix topped out at 999,999,999,990 and they had to add *another* place for the Dreamcast port since players ended up hitting that somehow.

I really enjoy the videos here but I started to cringe a little when I saw some of the repair techniques being used. I personally would never recommend using sandpaper to clean contacts or putting grease and lubricants all over the place. Most EM pinball parts were designed to run “dry” without lubricants. Using lubricants will “fix” stuck stepper units for the short to middle term but you will eventually have the same problem again with the lubricants attracting tons of dirt and or eventually drying out and becoming gooey. What has worked best for me for the longterm repair of stepper units is to fully disassemble, clean all parts in turpentine or rubbing alcohol to remove all the old lubrication and dirt, thoroughly clean and let dry, reassemble and then never lubricate ever again. Using sandpaper or a file for cleaning contacts or connectors is way too aggressive and unnecessary in my opinion. Sandpaper leaves a lot of fine scratches and groves in the printed circuit board traces and contacts. This can lead to worse contact between the traces and the wiper contacts, encourages electrical arcing and thus speeds up oxidation and it also becomes a place where dirt can accumulate. Better, in my opinion is to use a simple everyday eraser to remove oxidation, just erase it away. And for removing grease use a rag with a small amount of turpentine or rubbing alcohol to wipe it away. And above all do not put grease all over the printed circuit board or any electrical contacts! All lubricants, including Dielectric grease, are insulators do not conduct electricity. Over time the any grease or lubricant will cause the connection between the contacts to fail! I have fixed a lot of pinball machines where this was the cause of a lot of problems. Dielectric grease is intended to be used as a sealant, insulator, and protectant for things like battery terminals once they have been connected and not for wiper switches. Again, in my opinion you should keep all parts of the stepper unit dry and free from lubricants, especially the electrical contacts. Anyway that’s just my 2 cents and I hope did not offend anyone here, I just wanted to share some additional repair techniques that have served me well for insuring a longer lasting repair :-)
