You always say you are not a painter, but you always make these destroyed playfields look amazing when you're done. The colour by numbers thing is a good reference really as that is pretty well how an artist does the work. The will do the outline, define the zones and then do the fill colours, and then the accents on top. The outline is drawn in black, then the wings get the solid yellow, then the mustard coloued shading and accents get added on top. You really do a great job. :)

Drafting circle templates and french curves may help drawing in the black lines. Use two templates with a bigger circle in the bottom and the diameter you want to use on top. That will keep the paint from bleeding underneath. Same with using a french curve.

Great to see this machine rescued from destruction. Very satisfying to bring life back to these old machines. I often wonder how they were so neglected to end up on the brink of the landfill. I saved a Jr. Pac-man machine about a year ago. The bottom had rotted out and the guts had fallen out everywhere. I have to say you are more of an artist than you give yourself credit for Ron. I enjoy your use of artistic license! Thanks for your videos.

Hi Ron, Since you mentioned the possibility of making use of water slide decals, I thought I'd point out an alternate possibility; You might consider investing in a Cricut device (cricut.com) to make either small stencils, or cut out letters you can then clear coat over. Either way, I truly admire your eye for color matching, and your steady hand... The playfield looks great!

The repaint ended up looking really good (other than the text, which was my only real concern). My wife watched and also stated that the metamorphosis was impressive (she's a tough critic). She even chuckled at the "boob" comment. ;-). As for the missing text on the bonus tree, maybe have a local calligraphist take a white paint pen and rewrite the labels for you? Wouldn't cost much, if anything, and shouldn't be too tough to find someone capable (I am like you, there's no way I could pull it off... LOL). As stated on the last video, thanks from all of us pinheads for bringing the machine back to life, and not taking the easy way out and tossing her in the dumpster.
@LyonsArcade

Thank you Troy, we're trying to keep them running :) We could pay a calligraphist I guess, but I don't believe they'd get all 10 looking the same, exactly... so you'd still have the same problem but be out 100 bucks and two days of time waiting on them to show up...

Great job Ron, another pinball brought back from the graveyard. Looking forward to see you fix the hardware side of it. The only minor thing that I could see was the black outlines around the numbers, they are just a bit too thick and therefore stick out. I do have a question though, I saw there is a playfield overlay for this machine, I know it will add to the cost of restoring it, but in my opinion this would be a perfect candidate and I this it would add more to the value of the machine than what it would cost. My guess is that it might even same some time. One tip regarding the outholes, you might look into 3d-printing a rim for them, you can already find the design on thingiverse, it would print in less than 10 minutes and they will look great.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 жыл бұрын
The overlays are alright I've done them in the past on a few games... We're in a position where we're kind of getting top dollar for all of these machines after we fix them and an overlay even if it made it nicer wouldn't really earn us any more money so it would kind of be money we wouldn't get back, and just as a personal thing I'd rather have a touched up playfield than one with an overlay on it. They're great for some situations though...

If you are so concerned for the appearance of repairs, why not talk to the local high school art department and see if anyone would be interested in volunteering to restore the artwork or even turn it into an internship for the student. Just get it really clean, then draw the missing art back in using a picture of one from the internet. Once you get the art drawn back in you'll see it's just a few colored areas that need replaced, the black lines first to define the areas is the key to the whole thing.

I like watching as I played some of these games you restore back in the 70ies and 80ies. I never liked the "modern" more computer based games, but until I found your channel i had no clue what made these fun systems work. Thanks for taking your time to explain how the boards work - I'm constantly surprised how simple they were - they sure were fun even though they weren't that complex. Now like you I'm not an artist - I cannot draw a straight line without ruining the line and everything else. So I have a question. Wouldn't it be easier to paint with the "background" colors - the red and yellow - first, and then go over with the black marker to make the lines clearer? It would make it easier to paint as you don't have too many lines to stay away from when painting the red and yellow. Just someone who has no clue asking.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 жыл бұрын
You could do it that way, but the whole reason I put the lines first is so I can define the areas that need paint and what color they need to be. So you put the line in, then you know where the red stops the yellow starts, etc. You can do it the other way too though, just not the way I like to do it.

Looks great to me! Is there any technical reason for the pinball companies not applying clear coat on the playfields or is it just them cheaping out and not caring how the machine will look after some years of heavy playing?

@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 жыл бұрын
Yup. I think you could just add the black back and get away with it on most playfields.... It's acrylic paint though so it would wash off if you didn't clearcoat it...

Seeing this makes me wonder how it was done in the factory. Im guessing a bunch of stencils.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 2 жыл бұрын
It was silkscreened which is a pretty standard thing they do on t-shirts and things too... basically they make a screen that ink can go through in certain areas and lay it on the board, then spread ink out that's one color, then do another, then do another until the whole thing is done. Then they usually put some sort of laquer or clear coat over it to protect it. Thanks for watching Reed Vending!

Great job. I've got a Bally's Aladdin's Castle playfield that I purchased on Ebay because the one I had was missing quite a bit of decals/paint...however the one I purchased was at or worse than your Lost World (I shouldn't have ever bought it). It was black and the wood on the backside mildewed....I was able to clean most of it off with magic eraser, alcohol and even pure Carnuba now I'm ready to paint some of the areas affected by eraser/alcohol mix. You mentioned clear-coating the painted areas with canned clear, makes sense....works for me. However if the entire playfield was trashed, did you topcoat your project with urethane or something else when finished? You mentioned toward the end using wax, but don't you first topcoat with something then wax? I've never done this before and want to ensure protection of the playfield and good ball movement. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and again thanks for your video, you did some fantastic work!
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 жыл бұрын
If you've got it down to just bare wood, it'll be a little easier to clear, yes you could actually brush urethane or something on if you wanted to. The high end way to do it is to go to Maaco and pay them to clear coat it with auto clear after you paint it. Just depends on how far you want to go! We just clear the areas we repainted, then wax the whole playfield, we didn't put any other coating on it.

that looks great and good enough, just keeping in mind, it is a used machine that has to show it's life. Restoring it to like new, would not work. We had that ... like with vintage cars ...

You can see them if you get close enough, I think thinner will lessen them but then it takes more coats....

Another great video - Thank you! I am going to do some restoration to an old aluminium Midway Space Invaders Control Panel. Do you have a suggestion for a marker or pen to use for this, please? It's not a plastic overlay type of control panel (as you may know). Would a paint marker be OK? Thanks
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 жыл бұрын
I'd use an acrylic paint marker then clear coat the whole thing when you're done. If you use a sharpie or something it will run when the clear hits it, but if you use acrylic it stays nice and put when the spray paint goes on.

I saw a playfield overlay on eBay. Is it more of a pain and time consuming to apply a repro overlay vs. paint touch up? Overlay is $195. Plus your time to prep and apply it vs time to just do what you did and clean / touch up.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 жыл бұрын
I think I used about $4 worth of materials to paint this one, and it took less time than an overlay would, plus when you're done it looks pretty close to original (with a little touch up here and there) and has patina on it that's appropriate for a 42 year old game. The Overlays are pretty good though in two instances, one when you have artwork that's just completely destroyed, or two when you have the ability to make the whole game look like new, so you have to put the overlay on and then professionally clear coat the playfield with multiple coats of auto grade clear so all the inserts look correct.
@sideburn
@sideburn 4 жыл бұрын
Right. I figured the cleanup and applying of the overlay would be pretty big pain. Plus like you said you lose the original and patina. Same reason I keep holding back on putting a CPO on my Marble Madness. The overlay is a little worn but it’s original.

Ronnie is that a paint pen or just a permanent marker to redo the black lines on the playing field? Also love that music. Reminds me of a early eighties detective sitcom. The saxophone music.
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 4 жыл бұрын
It's a paint pen, I show it after I finish the lines. If you use a marker when you clear it the marker reacts to the clear and runs and smears everywhere, makes a huge mess.
