1970, Bob Altman with a small budget makes a movie from a novelette. Result, returns a bloody fortune from it. Genius!!!!!!!
@kevinL54257 ай бұрын
Roger Altman made only $75,000 for directing M*A*S*H. He wanted the “stupidest lyrics ever” for the song so he asked his 14 year old son to write them, who did it in five minutes. His son has made over $2 million over the years from royalties because the song was later used for both the movie and the TV series theme, even though the TV theme didn’t use the lyrics until the final episode.
@mrnobodyz6 ай бұрын
@@kevinL5425I heard somewhere that a lot of tv theme tunes came with lyrics because even if the filmmaker didn’t use them the extra royalties still had to be paid.

It was April of 1970 when I took the daughter of the Miami Dolphins owner, Joe Robbie, to see this groundbreaking film. The heavy amount of sexual content had me hoping I could at least get to 2nd base with Debbie. Alas, there was more action in the movie than any experienced by yours truly. Over a half-century later, what seemed cool then was very condescending to those who took war seriously. Also, boomers remember when "Made in Japan" meant piece of crap. By the end of the decade, that had changed. Electronics and autos from Japan started to corner a significant chunk of their markets. By the end of the 1980s, Japan had reached their high point. Then overvalued Japanese real estate and competition from first, Korea, then China by the 1990s would keep the country from dominating any market sector. Anyway, the movie now looks dated, its treatment of women almost misogynistic, and the hip smugness of the main characters elitist. On the other hand, the TV show was truly great, particularly during the Maclean Stevenson era.

Watched the show reruns in 00s and I love it, this is the first time I have seen any part of the movie - though I was well aware that the movie had quite a different tone and messaging compared to the show. But truly wild that this movie spawned what the TV show became. Though you do see a bit more of it in the first season.

When MASH was re-released in the theaters in the 70s, my mom told my sister and me (both under 17 yo), "Come on, you're going to the movie." Bought the tickets for us (being Rated R), handed them to us and went home. (Did the same with "Blazing Saddles"). Needless to say, we loved it! Sis was already a huge fan of the TV show. What a cool mom! BTW, René Auberjonois was asked if he wanted to play Father Mulcahey in the new TV show, but he declined because he didn't think it was going to go anywhere. Prolly wanted to go DOH! when it became a big hit. RIP, Donald -- you'll always be the true Hawkeye Pierce to me, finestkind!

The amount of actors who left or were played by different actors shows MASH ended up being a bit of a actors graveyard, still running in 1983 even the army never overstayed their welcome that much.😂

M*A*S*H directed by Robert Altman, came out the same year (1970) as Patton. I watch them in a drive-in... Donald Sutherland (Hawkeye) Elliot Gould (Tramper) and Salley Kellerman (Hotlips). It was an irreverent portrail of Korean War doctors 3 miles from the front line. While Vietnam had suffered Tet offensive in 1968 this movie brought the pain of war into homes across America with the TV series. (1972-1983) the 11 seasons had a huge influence how america processed wars and is felt in leaders today. My pick is the army nurse Margaret Houlihan (Hotlips) because it showed how badly women were treated during Korean war of the 1950s. My first experience watch an R rated movie following Patton... well in was only 12 and didn't understand the irony and issues of suicide and sexual harassment. Yet Hotlips played a key role in transforming to value of women in military from where it was...

Really? You think so? I think the show was a lot better, because it didn't used some cheap and really disgusting jokes about women and all that stuff. The Show had similar issues, though never as big,but they grew up. The characters were better. And the show can not only be really funny,but also very dramatic at the same time. And I think Alan Alda helped the show in a lot of ways and gave some new ideas. But maybe that's just me, because I think Alan Alda is a cool guy,not like any of the "anti woke" guys,who doesn't like that the show got rid of it's most problematic stuff. But yeah,there are some people who just like the comedy side more and that's okay,but just stop bashing on him, because it's still really great
