They explained that. An EMP will destroy transistor (and hence microchip) technology. It doesn't affect vacuum-tube technology, like the intercom. Straying a bit off-topic, Soviet MiG fighters from the 1980's reportedly had reliability issues due to vacuum-tube technology, but they used it anyway because it would survive the EMP from a nuclear weapon.

As far as MASK episodes go, this one was pretty weak. A ridiculous story line (as far as MASK anyways...), stale action, and improper usage of Gloria and Vanessa. Bruce's line about not wanting to swallow Gloria's exhaust was on point though! A look into MASK's Split Seconds future I guess?
