Raul Julia as M. Bison was the best thing about this movie. While dealing with Stomach cancer, he went out and gave 110% in his performance because his kids were fans of the game. As big of a fan that i am of Van Damme, its no secret that he slept walked through his performance while being paid higher than anyone in the cast. Julia always maintained that professionalism even while he was dying, and i have that much more respect for him for doing it.

I still consider Julias portrayal to be THEE definitive Bison, he clearly took the role seriously and turned what could easily have been a 'WUHAHA!' villain into a genuinely believable dictator, the scene shows Bison to be utterly deluded and insane, completely oblivious or derisive to anyone else's needs but his own. The movie itself may have been awful, but at least Julia was well respected for his amazing performance.

You can tell that Raul Julia knew what a cliche character he was playing-yet he still approached it with total seriousness, and used his theatrical background to give the character a depth it has never known since. This is not some cliche “Mwahahah, I am SO evil” kind of villain-this is a REAL villain who genuinely believes his actions are justified and that in the end he will be proven the hero of his own story. That is great acting, even in such a cartoony scenario.

rainbow_lizard That's my main issue with it. It should have never been made to seem like a comedy. This is one of the main reasons why most fighting game players don't care much for the story of the games. Meanwhile people put effort into making decent storylines like the makers of Mortal Kombat.

During the 90s, people were unsure how to approach game-to-film or even cartoon to live action films based on them being initially aimed at children. They try to keep it light hearted as the target audience is children, yet deal with serious topics like violence, politics etc and then blend them together. This and Double dragon are great examples of pioneering blindly into game to film adaptions. Ninja turtles live action however, I feel was far better in converting from cartoon/game to film during such time (a little campy but more believable than SF hehe). They do the errors of trying to make a lot of money by appealing to a broad* audience. Take Expendables 3 as the more recent film to try and accommodate for a wider audience. Stallone knows if he can get kids into his market, he could have a wider audience/make more money. However he sacrificed a lot of expectations in doing so which is why it didn't do so well. The streetfighter game was a simple plot, but to make it interesting or convert it to film was harder as there's like, 8 different stories to be told at once and weaving them in... It would have been a hard job. I feel if they kept it rated M or didn't try to appease all, it would have been fun to watch. Like Street fighter Assassins fist (such a great independent film made!). Mortal Kombat would have been much easier to convert as the plot in the games have already founded a good movie plot.

As many others have said, Raul Julia’s performance was the highlight of an otherwise terrible movie. He was terminally ill at the time and his grave condition is sometimes evident, yet he was still able to give it all that he had, just like he did in his previous films. Man.... I've only just found out today after looking on IMDb that Raul Julia died the same year this film was released (1994). Being that I loved this film as I was a youngster growing up, I'm saddened... He was General Bison!

The way I see Raul's Julia's Bison. This is pre psycho power bison before his powers consumed his mind and made him pure evil. Before the psycho power he was charismatic leader dictator. Everything you see in the movie is what bison was before the psycho power. The end of the movie when bison hand comes up from the rubble is when he discovers his inner psycho power and after that the Bison we see hear is nothing but the embodiment of pure evil.
