Saw her live in LA in this era when she was first blowing up on the radio. I've seen hundreds of live shows, including legends like Chuck Berry, Prince, James Brown. This one stands in my memory because I have never witnessed a more unpretentiously joyous LA music show crowd in my life--singing and dancing every word, smiling, and just riding this moment together. Everyone 1000% there for it. No shoegazers. No one on their phone. It was magic.

I forgot how gorgeous she is in this music video!!
Geez, I remember when this vid premiered on MTV just about exactly 10 years ago this time during my Junior year. Although this song was in circulation in Europe, and other countries already prior spring 05', this was pretty much her introduction to the U.S. It premiered I remember on the MTV new artist showcase that they would do like once a week during that particular period. I just initially remember that her style was just so foreign, and different from anything I had seen. The one thing with MYA from the beginning because of her style there wasn't much middle ground in terms of criticism. You either loved her style or you just didn't understand it, and rejected it. I personally was intrigued cause her style was so foreign to me. Over the years since I have just became a bigger and bigger supporter of her work, and her whole style. The thing that use to bug me is that she doesn't get as much credit as she should for being a major trendsetter in the game. I mean from her artwork, style of music, and style of fashion. So many females in the music game has bit her style. I guess copying is the most sincerest form of flattery. This vid brought me back cause this was when I first was introduced to MYA. MYA is one of the few artist for me that influenced a change in thinking, and being open minded to a broader world. Just a longtime avid supporter.

Can't believe she's 87 years old in this video.
@Trentsum4 жыл бұрын
lol. But she was born in 1975 and this song/music video came out in 2005, so she was 30yrs old in this vid and 45yrs old now.

@@Trentsum It first came out in 2003, played by Gilles Peterson and the infamous Pete Tong --- then small releases in Australia in Oct 2004, MySpace, and another small release in the UK in Nov 2004, then played on MTV2 in Autumn 2005 which led to a general release in Oct 2005. Crazy really, as most tracks that made it onto a Pete Tong playlist would have sold thousands within 6 months.

This song STILL sounds so fresh. She could release this today and it would be a hit.

I just found out that Justine Frischmann of Elastica co-wrote this song! Two favorites

Yeah, it was Justine who motivated M.I.A. to make music. M.I.A. was shooting some video's for Elastica and M.I.A. and Justine lived together for a while. M.I.A. wanted to write new music with Justine in the hope Elastica would reunite. But Justine told her to make her own music, and when M.I.A. met Peaches, she could use Peaches sampler and stuff to work on 'Arular'. (: (The video for Elastica's song 'Mad Dog God Dam' was shot by M.I.A.)

Wout Vl I know, I read about that awhile back. I just think it's crazy how the artist became a musician and the musician became an artist. Life is wild.

Keira Jade Oh sorry, I meant it as a response to Mira's reaction. I love Justine and M.I.A. and it's fascinating to see how they inspired each other. Although I do hope Justine will return to music one day. But I'm afraid that won't ever happen. The article was very well-written and is a nice hommage to their friendship. (:

Since "Paper Planes" dropped back in '06-ish, been a fan of MIA ever since. I remember being in either 5th or 6th grade and humming the song in class. Fast forward to now, I would hum "Boyz," "Galang," and "Bad Girls" when I'm locking the door or getting the mail

i love this video. it shows her raw sense of fashion. She has come a long way, but she's stayed true to herself. I also love how her art has changed while keeping the same concept... Arular had its edgy spray-paint symbols, Kala had its even edgier photoshop copy+paste and high saturation graphics, and now /\/\/\y/\ pushes even more cutting-edge and socially relevant internet art.
