I think this largely depends on the school. Here in the northeast US, there are schools well known to be attended by kids from wealthy families (富二代) and they tend to do the least to get the degree. Basically like those in your class. Though I gotta say, taking 45min to basically have an ESL class is pretty unacceptable... those classes are, what, $200+ per class? But there are other schools where students get in by their academic capabilities and they are largely like other hard working students. Think Harvard, MIT, etc. Basically these schools are tough to get in, and even tougher to graduate from, so if you don't have the academic chops, you won't succeed. Having said that, totally agree on the commercialization of many universities. Many bad outcomes like the ones you've highlighted!
University of Liverpool University of Leeds University of Manchester University of Sheffield University of Nottingham University of bath University of Warwick University of Edinburgh University of Birmingham Cranfield School of Management University of Southampton University of Bristol Newcastle university Lancaster university
