I still cry at this scene all the time. Easily one of my top 5 Animes of all time. It goes readily unnoticed within the Japanese Anime crowd's unless people such as ourselves bring it to light again.

I remember watching this and damn dear tearin up at the end... all he wanted to do at the end was get home back to his woman, and she paid the ultimate price. But it was the way she left him that hurt the most. To see her and loose her like he did .... the purity of unrelenting pain. Beautiful.....

You are right. This has been one of my Favorite Animes of all time. Always made me cry and the music just hit hard.
When I saw this in 1989, I thought I was never going to ever see it again or talk about the story and characters or be able to breach the subject of what I had watched on the television. I was able to use my phone and dial the number to the tv station and I was able to say the name of the film in a way that the man was able to confirm that what I watched was going to be aired again, in favor of me getting another chance to see it one more time. It was a good film for a 9 y/o.

And seeing that your almost my age, this movie has stuck with you as well. You are a man of Culture good sir. Now if I can find the right woman that loves this style of anime and the Music to boot, I'd be happy. But that's not happening anymore in this life.
LOL, you are probably right but I am amazed by your reasoning. "Hm, end of movie. Guy weeping shamelessly on a tree. Tender music. Long pan out to reveal tree dominating landscape. I'm gonna guess his girlfriend got turned into that tree. If it's Studio Ghibli, I mean. Otherwise there's probably a rational explanation." Too true.
