Am glad you went and explore so many places in Malaysia, where I grew up and spent most of my life in. And happy that you all stayed safe there, as Chinatown and surrounding areas were considered red light districts, hence many dodgy things are still happening despite being much better than what it used to be. I wish there are some online platforms to learn Hakka Chinese as being abroad doesn't help in accessing in-person lessons like ones available through Hakka associations in Malaysia.
Hope you can also visit Indonesia the next time you go to Malaysia

Pawn shops are mostly run by Hakkas. So are capentary, contractual work and the building of houses. In Malaysia, a lot of Hakka women go for Indian men.

Agree with what Mr Yang said, the younger generation are becoming less and less aware or interested in their own background and roots. With stronger China social media app presence these days, most kids are influenced to simply identify themselves as a singular Mandarin-speaking Chinese. Even those young adults with a young family tend to speak Mandarin to their 5-year-olds instead of using their own dialect.

Why is that? I really wonder? I do know a hakka woman originated from Raub with an Indian husband 😅.
