I was working at a record store in a mall in Meadowvale, Ontario. We grew up in the mid 90’s. It was around this time that what was deemed as “goth” music was getting big. I started to notice a lot of kids getting into the scene. I liked the music, and liked the representation that went along with it-the fashion and the attitude and commitment to it. I ended up writing the lyrics about a kid who was getting bullied and made fun of for dressing in a certain way. It was intended to be tongue-in-cheek but the moral was about no one listening to what they had to say-staying committed to something because they could identify with it. It made them feel seen and connected to something. “For just this once I wish you’d all just hear what I have to say!” was more or less saying that instead of making fun of me, talk to me so that you can understand why I am the way I am. We were so young when we wrote the song but the message still rings true to this day. I still love the song. It shows the brilliance of Ian’s songwriting and guitar playing at such a young age. It also shows how amazing Jonny and Aaron’s playing was-how they had a magical and serendipitous connection that all great rhythm sections have. It seemed to come naturally and effortlessly between the two of them. It was beautiful to watch and be part of. We were all trying to find our voices while exploring our influences. It was a very creative and important time for us, dipping our feet in different waters, trying to figure it out. It still brings a smile to my face thinking about those days and we’re stoked that we get to revisit and share these songs with you that we made so long ago. Hope you enjoy this portal back to another time and to where it all began. -Ben
