I've struggled with severe depression for about 6 years, and Id return to this song every now and then. When I first heard it, I felt surprised by how much I could relate to the lyrics. And most of all, it captured the melancholy perfectly. Im so grateful to Powapowa, for making me feel seen. That im not alone in my struggles. Wherever he is, I hope it's a better place. Rest in peace.

It’s also waking up from the illusion of love in a relationship that won’t last. Think about the lyrics like that and they’ll click into place.
One of my favorite things about Vocaloid is that the “singer’s” tone is very deliberate, and despite language barriers, it’s as if just listening to way the Vocaloid “sing” is enough to understand the feelings of the song’s creator

Even I don't know, for me, maybe the story will be: Somehow, after he took some drugs, He did "Aka Pen Onegaishimasu" and he commited suicide... 😔😔
I personally believe this song is actually about unrequited love. In the beginning Miku (or maybe even powapowap) sings about how the person they were in love with were quiet and didn't say anything and made up a lie to excuse themselves after she confessed her love to them. she goes saying that if everything they said to them before had to be lies (such as compliments and maybe even friendly I love yous) then she'll keep searching for those lies because that's what she's believed in for so long. She later on sleeps and dreams about them being together and the chorus, "you are.." can refer to the one she loves being her dream and 'that' of which she was looking for. Soon after that, they call her crying and quite possibly they may have broken up with their significant other, Miku believes she has a chance now as both of them have been dreaming of the same thing. Love. Yet, in the end, they still refused to be with Miku, as it was more than likely considered taboo (they could both be girls, or from Powapowap pov both boys) but their love for Miku is true but only on friend terms, which is when Miku loses complete hope causing them to become an "empty dream". Still desperate for love, Miku tries to stay optimistic knowing that she can still find "that"; love. Soon, the disruption starts happening, and Miku emotionally breaks, belittling herself saying it would never work either or. She then falls into a pit of depression, where she feels as though she's lost pieces of herself that can never be recovered.

I totally agree with your theory. I don't know why but that reminds me of Pinocchio-P's song: "My friends was good at drawing"
To try to understand the meaning of this song, I looked at multiple translations so I didn't miss anything important. This translation is good, but GetProphetic missed out on an important part of the song; it doesn't say, "I lost a small amount of flowers," it says, "I lost one monme worth of flowers." A monme is a type of ancient Japanese currency. The song is alluding to the Japanese children's game "Hana Ichi Monme," which literally means "a flower is one monme." (Look at the Wikipedia article for more information about this, that's where I'm getting my information.) When Miku says, "I lost one monme worth of flowers," it kinda means, "I lost to you." Based on all of this, I believe that Ryo Mizoguchi was trying to convey that he was in a relationship with someone that continuously cheated on him. He knew this, but he pushed the thought of it away, essentially living a lie, or in this case, a dream. The "that" that he was referring to was true love from his significant other, but it was all a lie. In the end, the character in the video seems to be in distress as she is waking up, which symbolizes the distress Ryo Mizoguchi must have been going through when he came to terms with the truth. And yes, I do believe this must be part of what Ryo Mizoguchi was going through before he died, mainly because the only way someone could hide such a deep message so subtly and thoroughly is if they were going through it themselves. I hope he is happier now...

My feelings towards this song are very similar. Just wanted to point out one thing you didn't mention: In the game "Hana Ichi Monme," the winning team usually sings "katte ureshii hana ichi monme" (we won and we're happy, hana ichi monme) and the losing team usually goes "makete kuyashii hana ichi monme" (we lost and we're upset, hana ichi monme). Interestingly the line in this song uses parts of both: "makete ureshii hana ichi monme" (we lost, and we're happy, hana ichi monme). I'm not sure what the significance of this is overall, but it's food for thought.

Butterfly is probably reference to a story of a Chinese philosopher who had dreamed of being a butterfly, and wondered whether he was really him dreaming a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming him. The butterfly symbolizes uncertainty of the reality and dream
@beepop_uwu2 жыл бұрын
After what I’ve experienced the past two months this song feels like it’s about a breakup and the character coming into terms with it. All the promises and feelings prior to it feel like lies and surely he’s the one committing the crime for having his “mouth blocked” and never being vocal about the issues beforehand. The butterfly head means she still holds feelings for him, she’s trying to sew the relationship back together. The dream she dreams is being happy with him in a relationship, the nice flowers she lost is another signifier of the love she lost. She mentions him crying, and both of them searching for butterflies, perhaps he still has lingering feelings for her, it gives her hope, thinking theres a possibility that all his words from before were true. In the end she realises her love would never come true. Maybe she still has lingering feelings, it flashes between her normal self and butterfly head. But it doesn’t matter anymore, because both the flower and butterfly are dead, the love between them and the feelings he had for her are both dead. Sorry if this doesn’t make sense, it’s probably just me self projecting and I’m not a great analyser, just wanted to put out my throughts

You got the "small amount" wrong. It doesn't represent 3.75 grams, it represents a coin that had a value of 3.75 grams of silver. I think 匁 is in reference to the Japanese game 花一匁. It's very similar to Red Rover, and children play it a lot when they're younger. I think "losing the monme of flowers" is referencing a loss of innocence that is present in youth? It would make sense, considering that a lot of his other songs have similar themes about losing the innocence of childhood and becoming an adult. I might be reaching but that's what I think, at least!

You mean Hana ichi monme?
@んあ-s2u3 жыл бұрын
It's been 4 years since the comment post, but forgive me to poke my nose into this conversation. The lyrics "makete uresi hana ichi monme" also appears to be a word play, switching the words from the verse "katte uresii hana ichi monme" and "makete kuyasii hana ichi monme" from the aforementioned 花一匁 game. In the game, the team that won another player sings "勝って嬉しい花一匁 (katte uresii hanaichimonme)" meaning "Glad to win Hanaichimonme"; the team that lost a player sings "負けて悔しい花一匁(makete kuyasii hanaichimonme)" meaning "Feeling bitter to lose Hanaichimonme". This song sings "Makete uresi hanaichi monme(負けて嬉し花一匁)" which translates to "Glad to lose Hanaichimonme"... Also, let me mention that in Hanaichimonme, children roleplay buying and selling of flower(hana) for a monme(ichi monme, one monme). "Flower" here could very well be a secret language for children or teen girls, making this game a depiction of human trafficking which wasn't so rare in old times. Many of children's games in Japan depict dark or gruesome things(like for pinky swear, children sing that if promise went broken, they'd force another to swallow 1000 needles), so this isn't as farfetched as one might think. To a child who played Hanaichimonme, its darkness revealed as they got older. So, when I hear the lyrics saying that they are "glad to lose hanaichimonme", I feel like the singer is teasing about how they have matured and thus aren't innocent anymore. This game's appearance in the lyrics surely adds a certain hue to the atmosphere of the song, so I couldn't resist to note some background knowledge about it.

I think this song is about fining yourself, what life truly is. 'that' is meant as the truth here, "From now on I will begin searching for 'that' " - she is searching for the truth in life "I lost a small amount of those nice flowers" - Lotus Flowers, which can be found in the video, are associated with Purity in japanese culture, so I think you can interpret this as that the more and more she finds out the truth she looses her Purity. The dream is meant as the opposite of truth, "I was forever dreaming a dream from which I would not awake" - she was living in those lies all the time, so it seemed like she would never awake from this 'dream'. "When mooring came, you, who had been crying, was chasing after butterflies as well" - Butterflies can be associated with the souls of the living and the dead, so maybe this phrase means to, yet again, find the sense of life, catching your soul, finding yourself. "The dream I dreamt is the same as you saw" - They are all trapped in the same dream, the same lies. The Beginning could meant that someone says he found the truth but actually he doesn't know better so the the words he said "spun their own tale". This would explain the next phrases with "if all the words you say are lies..." -> She will keep on searching for the truth /"if all the words you say are true..." -> The dream wouldn't be a dream anymore, it's empty, but still you can't fully escape it, but she will be able to finally surely find the truth. Idk if this makes any sense haha. I hope you get what I meant, my english isn't the best and the way I wrote is a bit confusing. The only part I don't understand is " Yes it was love which would never come true" It doesn't go well with my theory. But maybe I'm at least on the right path? I hope I helped a bit with understanding this beautiful song!
@gillian49238 жыл бұрын
+Naori Boru Ah another thing I still want to say about the title: I'm not very good at english, but I guess the "at the mercy of.." here translates to being dependent from something. So I would interpret this as being (obviously) independent from that "dream" The lies which make out their lives, because "that" (the truth) isn't that appealing and won't let them dream anymore, forces them to see the reality and how society etc. works.
@soraxvi8 жыл бұрын
I agree that butterflies here would mean to find a sense in life and finding yourself. I think this theme is in most of PowaPowa-P's songs such as "Strobe Light" with the lines "I'm looking for meaning in life". The second time it repeats, "...I walk because I was born" follows after. This is complicated to convey this in a understandable way. I have it in my head but I can't figure out how to say it. It's like the meaning of life isn't found yet, there is a pause before giving an answer. There's uncertainty. Depending on interpretation, the theme of meaning and finding yourself could also be in "Year 3 Class C-14, Chiyoko Kubozono's Joining of the Cabinet". Chiyoko is still figuring out what she wants to do, she's still figuring out about herself; if what she's aiming for is what she really wants to do. There's a lot of other songs, it would take a while to find them that share a similar theme! Or aspects of it.

The theory is awesome, But a line of lyrics were kind of specific, "Yes, It was a love that would never come true" (plus the holding hands part, letting go of the hands in the PV) made me think that it was an ending of a first relationship, mentioning the flowers and the lotuses
@arthurisinlondon8 жыл бұрын
I was thinking, maybe the girl is dreaming, possibly in a coma? Maybe the gray world and the gray moth represent the real world, and when the moth flies to the flower and dies at the end, is the "death" of the dream and when she finally wakes up from her dream/coma. The lyrics don't seem to have a clear meaning, aside from the beginning and the ending of the song, almost "dreamlike." There's also the title: maybe the girl is depending on this dream to escape her reality or is living inside a false fantasy?

Not to get philosophical, but I get that this is the dream of a girl trapped in a coma, the beginning has some visuals that may represent the conception of a child, while at the same time talking of "crime" or "sin" (as noted by the translator). Later in the song she mentions that it is love that she cannot find. Also, the ending of the song has an eerie similarity to the sound of a heart-rate monitor flat-lining. So, I guess this girl perhaps conceived a child with a man who broke her heart and was less than honest, something happened and she drifted into a coma, perhaps her "heart strings", tendons in the heart, were severed by the severe emotional trauma and she went into a coma. Just my views on the whole thing. :)

I read in the Vocaloid Lyrics Wikia that the line that talks about losing flowers is actually referencing the Japanese children's game "Hana Ichi Monme" (a game that is similar to the American children's game "Red Rover"). According to the wiki page for this song, "The name literally means 'a flower is worth one monme.' A monme was a Japanese coin that existed during the Edo Period, worth 3.75 grams of silver." I don't know if this fact will actually help with trying to understand this song though

Very difficult to interpret song, but it seems a little like the song is about truth and lies ? the beginning lines about "committing crimes with a mouth blocked by words left unsaid" sort of implies that people lie and spin their own tales, though we still know theyre lying. "that" which is referred to might be the truth. "if you're always lying, then i'll have to search for 'that'". dreaming could be literal, but perhaps it refers to the "reality" presented through lies? she can't wake from the dream because she can't find the truth. she's surrounded by butterflies (which are apparently symbolism for the soul, though many butterflies are a bad omen) so perhaps she feels like people's inner selves are exposed to her, but continually flit away and disappear before she can grasp them. the dream she sees is the dream "you" see--because they're all living the same lie. and if one only speaks the truth, the dream will be empty, and only reality will remain. this is probably really off base but... yeah . either way, this is one of my favorite powapowa songs. it's really just magnificent in every way.

both the song and pv are absolutely beautiful, thank you so much for the subs!
Here's my line by line interpretation of the song, sorry if its a little confusing I'll try to condense to solid points at the end. I think that the song is a story about a girl who's boyfriend has cheated on her since she knows that "surely he committed the crime" and when she confronts him he is shocked and taken by surprise, thus "his mouth was blocked". But when he finally gained his composure he gave her a "faulty excuse" and she knew that he really did cheat on her so "the words he neglected to say" spoke for him and confirmed her suspicions and they broke up. Now at this point the girl is reminiscing and wondering "if all the words [he] spoke were lies" but she decides to move forward and continue searching for "that" which would be love. a love that he threw away "into the tightly crammed packing"; which could be a metaphor for the trash or unwanted materials sealed away to be forgotten. But despite all of this she would continue to wish for love ("dreaming a dream from which I would not wake"); although because of the relationship she "lost a small amount of those nice flowers" (lotus flowers) which can symbolize her losing some of her purity and she blames him for this loss by saying "you are.." repeatedly. Now here I notice a slight poetical turn where it seems like her emotions shift toward being more depressed (possibly due to loneliness) and sighs "expelled breath", so she continues to think about him and their love and she takes her sigh and turns it into a wish for true love by "carv[ing] it into the white colored day". Here I feel the white colored day is a metaphor for a wedding day, a day she wishes to have one day. But then suddenly the boy "who had been crying" comes back and wants to apologize to her and wants her back. He tells her that he wants the same things she does since he "was chasing after butterflies as well". Here the butterfly could have multiple meanings, in the boy's case it could represent a promise to change, while for the girl it represents a hope for the future. So then she becomes elated and takes him back since "the dream [she] was dreaming is the same dream you saw". But as time went on she realized she couldn't love him after what he did and questions "if the words [he] say are all true". Thus, she comes to the conclusion that even if he is telling the truth he would be the only one who sees them having a future together ("from now on, you will be in an empty dream"). But she realizes that even if she lets their relationship go she will still "be able to catch" love ("that"). Here the girl accepts that their relationship was over (thus the "it was love that never came true") and she comes to terms with her losing "a small amount of those nice flowers....forever". So, overall she accepts that she has lost some of her purity over the span of their relationship and she grows from it. Thus bringing a new meaning to the lotus flower, rebirth. Alright so, this was a little longer than I thought it would be but; basically I find that the song is a coming of age story. Where a girl realizes that life doesn't happen like it does in your dreams and that no matter how hard she dreams for a future with her first love some things may just get in the way of that to make it impossible (her inability to trust him again, as an example). So this ties in with both symbols of the lotus flower, where her realization that life isn't perfect is one aspect of her lost purity and her wish to continue searching for love anyways is a representation of the second symbol of rebirth. Furthermore, this symbol of rebirth and purity is solidified with the images of the light colored lotus flowers rising from a dark (murky) background; where here the color of the flower represents her purity and its rising from the darkness a symbol of her rebirth and prospective to find love again. Again sorry this was so long, hope you enjoy my theory. Sorry if its a little jumbled too.

I must thank you for sharing such an interesting theory of this song!!! I love Siinamota and I'm always trying to understand his songs,which apparently seem not to make any sense!!! So I'm glad to see this, really. I still don't understand very much the "white coloured day" part, but I found this metaphor on the song Dream inside a Dream. Bye the way I feel curious about the fact that being awake is to be asleep in Dream Inside a Dream, I wonder if it has something to do with this song...In that case...

This is great, I could've never described this better than you although, that she "lost a small amount of those nice flowers" was misinterpretated, according to a comment I think is correct, here I'll just quote it "When you win Hana Ichi Monme, you sing "Katte, ureshii, hana ichi monme" (I won, I'm happy, hana ichi monme), and when you lose you sing "Makete, kuyashii, hana ichi monme" (I lost, I'm upset, hana ichi monme). So what she says is "I lost, I'm happy, hana ichi monme".", so your interpretation wouldn't apply on this, no offense though, this is really close to what I had in mind as well

I actually kind of like Akidearest's video, but i don't like it, she's free to do video about everything she likes, but the thing that i don't like is her viewers coming every time on the comment section and say "Am i the only one that came from Akidearest?". I don't like it because i feel like that's an insult to Ryo Mizoguchi that did his best to do wonderful songs and had to leave this voice just to be aknowleged after his death by people that didn't even tried to look after him. I'm pretty sure that every people that comes from aki didn't know that Ryo Mizoguchi existed, and he his one of the most popular vocaloid producer.

Isn't that a good thing? Most of us didn't really know the person at all until now? Are you saying that it's bad that more people are coming to acknowledge a great person? That's the way I see your comment.

What i don't like is that her subscribers keep on talking about her and not Ryo Mizoguchi. It's the comment section of his song, and of the people that worked into doing the pv, translation ect... so i think it's rude of them to speak about another someone that don't have any links with it. I already said it when i replied to someone else. But every authosr like to see their work aknowleged by THE OWN EFFORTS, and obviously wouldn't like people talking about someone else on his song's comment section. It is rude to his efforts, because these efforts were his life. He abandonned a lot of things to make these efforts.

Ah yes, that sounds reasonable. But nonetheless this is a great song and I'm pretty sure the commentors meant no harm :)

They insult the creator BC they know and they don't say I was here BC the song is beautifu. Dont expect me to reply if u reply to this reply BC this is my secondary email and I have it for security purposes. (I don't get notifications/emails) I also wont get the insult if u do insult me BC of the same reason.

KeiNoKo true but Aki was only listening and promoting his song and it is not her fault, also the commenters say that bc they don't know, they will find out eventually because I think anyone who listens to Ryo Mizoguchi's songs will want to listen to all of them and soon become a dedicated fan like us

This is my favorite song by him, I can't believe it was by him! And I heard we can't be sure how he died.... or even if he did, he maybe just feeling a bit depressed. Nothing was proved. ._.

Sadly it's pretty clear he died at this point. It was announced, and he had a funeral. We don't know how he died still, but it's probably not our business.

He's dead, he killed himself, it may be hard to believe but on the new year someone from his family (it was him mom i think) twitted with his account and after deleted the tweet ... She seemed really sad...
