Langsam getragen. Durchweg leise zu halten - Etwas bewegter.
Sorry about the crackling and slight blip in the sound between 4:45-4:55, this is probably due to some dirt on the tape that needs cleaning, but I can't be bothered to re-do the clip (^_^)

Ten marvelous fingers which make the piano sing like the most beautiful human voice, tender, passionate, desperate for Love.

He adds himself to the music in a very unique way. One of the real Interpreters of this time.

Pletnev's singing tone is second to none and there are many players out there without imaginations who simply play the notes. With Pletnev you often get this unexpected accentuation of notes or lines that are overlooked, in many cases this reinvigorates me as a musician and listener. I appreciate Horowitz in the closing moments of the Fantasy too, the dynamics are perfect but here you can literally pick out the notes - bass, middle, and melody.

whether or not one agrees with his interpretation, you must agree that this is a highly original, moving performance. In my opinion, no one plays this piece more like a "fantasy" than Mr. Pletnev.

I believe Pletnev is the only living musician who is able to play Schumann's piano music. he is the complete opposite of all these modern musicians for whom music is nothing more than the score and "respect for the composer" (which is, in fact, only respect for the letter). Pletnev is intelligent enough to realize that in order to make a piece come alive, it is necessary to listen to one's own inner voice, to listen to one's soul. Pletnev doesn't reproduce the score but he looks beyond it... I am sure this is what any great composer appreciates.

Perhaps the rubato is eccentric, but no one plays with more sonority or makes me rethink pieces like Pletnev. His musicianship is unparalleled.

If you want to hear God or whatever like that speaking, the only way is to listen to M.Pletnev's Art. His music is neither cool nor eccentric. It's just because it's out of humanity. It's absolute. Trancendendal. Divine.

by the way a meaningful rubato like pletnev's (no matter how strong) will always be more natural than the unmotivated (even small) rubatos and wavering arround of so many other pianists.

Not my favorite version of this from him (a little rushed) but he always has a wonderful viewpoint in his interpretations. I still like this very much but he is sublime in other versions. Regardless, Pletnev is easily one of my top 5 or 6 greatest pianists ever.

yes, rubato, but who cares? It's been a great pleasure, as are other performances of this beautiful piece including Lang Lang. But, Pletnev helps me to start understanding a first tiny bit of Schumann - no other helped me over the past 30 years.

When I first heard this interpretation, i found it a bit too lofty for this profound movement.. strangely after hearing it 2 or 3 times it gets even deeper and intoxicating than every other performance of this piece.

I find this interpretation totally incoherent. He mucks around with the tempo so much that the movement has no underlying pulse. There is a Gieseking recording on KZbin where he allows plenty of ebb and flow whilst still making the movement seem like it has a consistent thread. I'm not usually a massive Richter fan, but his recording of this is near perfection to me

I respect Pletnev very much, but, of course, not in Schumann's repertoire.. more than strange interpretation.
