When released in 1979, this was basically an intro to the entire genre of 80s synth pop

+matth... Not entierly true. Long before this tune was the first "techno/disco" tune ever: "Popcorn" by Gershon Kingsley (1969) which was made more popular by Hot Butter.

🎵"New York, London, Paris, Munich everybody talk about mmm Pop Muzik🎵. That was our favorite part of the song. Very early synth pop music back in the late 70's early 80's. We loved it and we all got on the roller-skating floor and did our best dance moves we could muster up to this song whenever it came on! By the time we eventually got cable television in our household we finally saw the video, we thought it was a bit odd, but we already liked the song, so it didn't matter to us at the time. This is still a favorite of ours! I'm glad you enjoyed it! ☮ and 💕

@@taniaPBear Yay! It was the same for us all really. We were exposed to all types of music, anything that was on the American Top 40 it was played there and the kids not only from our city, but neighboring cities came too and we made friends along the way. Yes, we enjoyed our youthful days back then and cherish them.

This, and a wave of other songs, came out literally overnight and put a end to the 1970’s and ushered in the 1980’s. I can't remember when a decade changed overnight.

I'm of the opinion that 1979 to 1981 were, instead of a sudden change, a gradient where they were a melange of both the late 70s and early 80s.

This came out in 1979. I remember around 1980-81, my mother and I went to a pizzeria for lunch. We sat in the back room and no one else was in there. I went over to the jukebox and it had a quarter in the coin return. I played this song and it BLARED! I felt bad for my mother the whole time the song was playing (seemed like an hour).

This is what I miss. Pop music (😱) was catchy and very listenable in the 80s. I’m into more hard rock etc but I love this song. It’s well crafted and well executed. It’s also a very snarky song about the pop music record business of the time. Quite clever.

Man, a DJ recently played this at a dance party and I coulda fallen over as soon as I heard those first notes. This was a huge hit in my teens and so much fun. Offshoot of the post-punk, new wave experience that I'm glad I was alive for! This is pre-MTV, so the vids are generally kinda low budget. We used to love to talk about the idea of videos - they were a new thang! Love watching your takes.

It's great to see you reacting to music again, I know it's been difficult, and although I've been following you for a few years, I don't think I've commented before. Your open-hearted reactions are beautiful and a force for good which is badly needed nowadays of course. You're right about Talking Heads; both are New Wave, Talking Heads are more artsy avant-garde, and this is more on the self-reflexive satirical pop side, while managing to be very popular. There are many sub-genres in the the New Wave of post punk; the richest genre in music, very experimental and embraced the DIY punk ethic. Also on the plus side I suspect it will be a lot easier to post New Wave videos without hindrance as it was niche. Let me know if you want any recommendations. Peace and blessings.

bother u took me in the wayback machine! Makes me think of the early 80's esp. MTV, imho yeah; MTV helped change the scape, brought new wave, punk into the mainstream, groups that never recieved airplay on top 40 and even the then hard rock stations, I actualy remember seeing the first video on the format, the buggles- video killed the radio star, pop music was in that early rotation also groups like the tubes, the cars, human League, Hewy Lewis, Talking Heads, Dead Kennedys, cindy Lauper, Pat Bennitar, Duran Duran, some off the top of my head, but recieved regular rotation along with earlier promo videos, like Queens bohemian rhapsody, and groudbreaking videos from Michael Nesmith, "monkeys" then Elephant parts, then ten years later MTV again changes music, history with Yo-Mtv raps, got to give the network, entreprenuers, early VJ'S their props, really did change the game

LOL, keep thinking of all those groups, Men at work, Blondie, The Pretenders, Adam ant, who could forget Akrons Devo, only a New Wave cult following until MTV, then blew up to superstar status, but still others like, M, Human League, Men at work practicaly unheard of today, only like a shadow of that era., oh well gettin too deep for my shallow brain, peace doc! Happy Fathers day to all the dads out there, mch love
