This was the first of MRJames gems that I ever read as a child , I was spellbound and it stayed with me for years . To take the simple ideas of a whistle and a bed sheet, and turn them into such a profoundly disturbing, famously frightening ghost story is why MR James truly is the genius master of atmosphere. His stories, for the ghost lover and constant seeker within the genre, are hard to beat , James' world of the researching academic , erstwhile historical detective , has never been better portrayed or more atmospherically enchanting .I am totally immersed in each and every one, each and every time I read them . As often asked , I recommend every new ghost story hunter to go straight to MRJames and they are never disappointed..... although I must admit that this short play did not do the story justice nor pull it off in the atmosphere department, in my opinion. The Bedsheet scene is the culmination of all the suspense build up, so very important , and yet it was rushed through in this adaptation. To be fair, I did wonder how they would do in 13mins ,it is a story that slowly builds over time to its terrible end... but I was a little disappointed in the bedsheet scene I'm afraid.
