Great analysis. I think Morag is the perfect example of how a mentor character should be written. Fully dimensional, with their own arc, but they don't steal the spotlight from the protagonist that they're guiding. Among of my favorites. Only thing I felt was amiss is her line during the final battle, where she discusses with Zeke people's purpose in life and she remarks that some people go their whole lives without finding theirs. The way its delivered, it leaves a lot to interpretation and it kind of implies her personal journey actually isn't over yet.

Thank you! I know what you mean. I think the brief discussion about finding purpose in life is good and timely, but perhaps the line where she wonders if she'll find her purpose could be unnecessary. I guess somebody could view it as residual conflict in her that wasn't completely cleared up after her discussion with Niall, but it does feel a bit strange.

Morag is so wonderful, right up there with Dunban for me. While Dunban might have the greater story moments, Morag easily has the better heart-to-hearts, and many of them are hilarious too, surprisingly enough. Morag's struggle with a dead fish, resisting Tora's demands for her to get naked with him (it makes sense in context) and her spot-the-Titan competition with Zeke at the top of the World Tree are just some of her great moments. I also love how Fiora explicitly says that Morag reminds her of Dunban during a post-battle quote, though Morag isn't all that happy with being compared to a guy, given all the other characters that have joked about or remarked on her being "manly". Morag being kinda vain is another surprising thing about her, she takes pride in her appearance and puts in a lot of effort to look her best, as a heart-to-heart with Pandoria makes clear.

I've seen it in some comments, so I want to toss my hat into Morag's line at the end about not having found purpose. I've always seen it as her having journeyed to high above the world with Rex in search of it, and still not having divided herself from the Empire in terms of her personal goals. But one of the little unspoken details that I love about the ending is the scene where they're sitting on Azurda's back and Brighid cradles up to Morag affectionately, because That is what she has gained from this journey. Not some obvious answer to life, but friends and loved ones that will reassure her as she moves on, just as she has done for Rex. It's okay that she hasn't found her goal, because now, she can start on her own personal journey. Also wanted to say that I'm glad you focused on all that makes Morag great, because she's such a good character and her not being a focus of the story only makes her stronger as a cast member.

Great video man! Mòrag is undeniably my favorite character in Xenoblade 2, with Zeke following not too far behind. I feel like not many people really seem to have that much of an interest in Mòrag compared to the rest of the cast, which really saddens me. I'd love to see a Dramatis Personae for Malos, Jin or Lora, I think. Malos interests me a lot because while I think his prime directive was to destroy the world, he manages to find at least a good(ish) reason to do it by freeing Blades from their servitude, i.e. to make a decision for himself rather than have one made for him. Jin because of the curse Lora laid on him by accident, the curse to remember the events of 500 years ago while the truth was destroyed by Amalthus along with everything he ever loved. Lora, for her un-chosenness, the merc who never had fate on her side, but fought an impossible battle against GIANT FUTURE MECHA AND STILL WON. Actually the whole Torna crew really. They fought and died to save the world, not driven by destiny but because they knew it was right.

That was great! I think you did her character justice. She's always been my favorite character to play when it comes to endgame content, as my main DPS. Refering to story scenes, one of my favorite moments showing her dedication to the party comes from the fight against Monado Malos and full power Jin. While she's not capable of fighting them due to the massive difference in power, she still doesn't hesitate to intercept an attack from Malos to protect one of the characters. (Sorry, it's been a bit, so I can't remember who it was. I think it was Nia or Dromarch)

I loved this video! Morag was definetly the best designed character! I am a sucker for armor that covers only the shoulder or a portion of the body, looks sick! You should do a video on the blade Kora! I think her design has a lot of theming and strong messages regarding the power of friendship and picking yourself up when your feeling down! Not to mention her sidequest is probably one of the most complex and deep in the series! The dancing scene has a lot of hidden undertones that most people may miss, like "if you want your life to change, MAKE SOMETHING CHANGE" or how you should make an effort to talk with different people so you can progress in life and open your circle!

I think i read many of morag's actions a bit differently, though not to such an extreme degree that it changes the trajectory of the story, just different nuances. First off, Dughall's "fear" came off completely differently. Beyond any preestablished villany, the fear instead cements Dughall's cowardice that comes from knowingly doing wrong and potentially even going against his country's interests while abusing his rank. From that perspective, Morag does not come off as a threat, but as an ally-to-be, even if a clashing of swords is inevitable. Feeling slighted by Rex holding back, though still with all the elements you point out, is far more complex than just that. There is more to the reaction than just "he had the power and he held back. Against me, even with my title and reputation." It was also a moment of realization. "He is probably a good kid. If he is worthy of that power, we will meet again on friendly terms. If he isnt, then we wont meet. If we get into conflict again, it will be because he is using that power for the wrong reasons and i will have to strike him down." That last point directly tying into the confrontation at mor ardain, where her duty prevents diplomacy, even if rex clearly wants to explain himself. Thankfully, the fact he is still holding back combined with his constant attempts to talk his way out finally end the clash with an understanding. The biggest overall discrepancy i see between our interpretations is where personal and national interests clash. You see it first appearing in gormott, i dont see it happening until Nial has to drag the words out of her heart. She lets Rex go at gormott because the aegis is not a high priority target yet, if it was, she would likely have a much bigger militaristic force with her to back her up, especially coming from a militaristic nation. Her judge of character says rex is not a threat to the world, and his lack of experience is so obvious that even if he was a threat, she would be too highly trained to waste her efforts on the noob when a modest troop could take him down without casualties. (heck, nia's capture proves as much. sure, they lost because of brigid, but the troops were also a local patrol with small numbers. If brigid was just 5-10 grunts, rex and nia still would have lost just from the sheer numbers distracting them from the ether net preparations.) Now, where does morag fall for me? well, i dont hate her character in any way and it is still well written, but i also cant say she is my favorite xenoblade character. The biggest downside for me personally is her mor ardain aura. Sure, she is still an individual, but her goals and motivations are so entwined with her nation that she feels more like her rank than her individual personage. She isnt a hero that saved the world, she is the top officer on the field for a nation who's pedigree let her keep up and tag along with the party of heroes. When personal motivations are secondary to national motivations, it is hard to see them as anything more than a product of their nation. In comparison, golden country's Hugo does the job a million times better. Yes, he is from the same militaristic nation, and yes, he also has an equally high rank and skills from the nation, but the difference is that hugo has an identity as an individual separate from his nation. He is long-time friends with adam, and his comrades in the aegis war see him as hugo, not "the jewel of the empire" or some other spoiler-avoidant title. Morag's character is her personal caricature of mor ardain, hugo is a person who just so happens to have an important role in mor ardain. It is hard to sympathize with a national caricature in a way required to make them a favorite character for any other reason than aesthetics, and in a world as rich in story and character as xenoblade chronicles 2, that is not enough. To be clear, she is still far superior to the grunts and NPCs in mor ardain, but a vast majority of mor ardain's locational character comes from the way morag acts.

Morag isn't really about the block life. Sure, she can hit high block numbers, but not as high as Tora can with Poppi alpha. Her real strength is how effortlessly she can hit max agility. Morag does not get hit. Not if you ask nicely, not if she lets you, not if she wants to. It's just incapable of her taking damage unless the attack is outright unavoidable without the use of i-frames like evasion arts or level 4 specials or blade combo finishers
