Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has some of my favorite cutscenes in any game, but this cutscene in particular never fails to stun me. Let's take a dive into the history of the Xenoblade Chronicles series and analyze what I believe is Xenoblade 2's greatest cutscene, "The Birth of a Universe".
Addendum: I realize that while Jesus was able to face temptation as indicated with His time in the desert, He wasn't capable of sin. Therefore, when I note that He could "fall victim to the same evils", that's in reference to temptation.

Just wanna add a tiny detail into this masterful moment: in one of the early drafts of the original Xenoblade story, the ending was much more complex and confusing according to the director's wife. Even with a full explanation, she had a hard time understanding it, so they reworked the ending into what it is now. So it's likely that the definitive edition will change the ending now that there's more context from the story in 2. Either they'll use the original ending or fix the retcons the sequel created.

It wasn't the director's (Tetsuya Takahashi) wife (Soraya Saga) that said this, but another Monolithsoft employee (Yurie Hattori). She was like an editor. It's from the an old Iwata Asks interview from when the game first came out. "No, no, not at all. I was actually really grateful for her input. There were a lot of instances where I'd be writing the scenario and be deeply engaged in taking things in a particular direction, and while I'd be really excited by it, Hattori-san would point out that she couldn't really understand what we were getting at. One case in point is the game's ending. Initially, we'd come up with what we felt was an ending with a rather explanatory feel. But in fact, she told us that even with this explanation, she couldn't really understand it. When she pointed this out to me, I could see what she meant. There were things that seemed perfectly clear to us, but which were actually tricky to understand for players who didn't have previous knowledge. If you're referencing things that people know nothing about, it's really a meaningless exercise, isn't it?" iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/wii/xenoblade/2/2

@@EgotisticalAltruist disappointing but not too much of a surprise, remastering does not give you many options in way of changing cutscenes without a good amount of effort and money, and i heard that the budget was small (not incredibly small, just small compared to their other games) and considering that scene is an important scene thats a part of a long cutscene, i believe it wouldve been hard to change it up without a quite a bit of effort Also, we can make the assumption that alvis' recollection of those events were fragmented and important bits were lost

Honestly I subscribe to this though process too. I was basically thinking that the more human side of Klaus remained in the original universe and is able to remember the events for what they were. A moment where he held an insane amount of optimism for being able to possibly save humankind from itself only to be burned by the actions that resulted in him just ending humanity and leaving what was his home world completely in ruins with humans as he knew them turned into these zombie like beasts. He remembers it as a burden which he carries. Meanwhile the Klaus that became zanza was the more arrogant side and in turn remembered it in such a way. That he was in control of what he did and it resulted in a positive outcome,the new universe he gets to be god in was born. His memory clouded by his new arrogance.
@darkstorm2579
@darkstorm2579 3 жыл бұрын
@@sonicfan11o9 That's an interesting perspective. I was slightly disappointed that the ending in Definitive Edition wasn't changed, but given how different Klaus and Zanza are, it makes sense that they remember things differently. Zanza remembers what he wants to believe and how he became a god while Klaus knows the whole truth and realizes that he essentially wiped out his universe. With Alvis, it's possible that when he resonated with Zanza and Meyneth, his memory got corrupted or he was given false info from Zanza. We don't know how sentient the Aegis cores are prior to their awakenings after all.

@@darkstorm2579 Yeah. Iirc Alvis mentioned when showing Shulk what happened that it was one of Zanza's memory. A person's memory isnt infallible. They can be altered from what really happened. Even just recalling the memory again changes it just slightly. So who knows how it could change when the person recalling it has a god complex and the power to back his complex. I can see Alvis just going like "Close enough" as the specifics dont really matter to this universe. Shulk knowing how it specifically went down wont change much.

Klaus literally says “we humans are fools” and mentions how they destroyed earth, but talks about it like he’s distant to this moment. After this he then talks about himself becoming a God with the conduit, furthering himself from what he perceives as the blight of humanity. But the outcome of the birth of the universe is the focal point of his change. When he “fails” and kills humanity without a reset in the 2 world he realizes his faults and calls himself a fool; but in one he never fails and reaffirms his idea of Godhood and creates zanza
@KayJulers

I like the wording you used about him reaffirming his idea of divinity. Since XC2 Klaus is aware that his counterpart Zanza is about to killed by Shulk when he hears, "Today, we use our power to kill a god," I think it's interesting to think about how much of Zanza's existence he actually is cognizant of. Perhaps he has felt Zanza's thirst for power in the other universe, which has further solidified his regretful mindset. I'd love to see more exploration of this connection in the Definitive Edition!

KayJulers that’s interesting to think about. I was mainly talking about the creation of the arrogant godly persona of Zanza, but he does acknowledge the line said by shulk. And thinking about it could it possibly be since that’s when Shulk awakens the true power of Alvis’s aegis. Because he says that line after the true Monado is summoned: and as stated in XC2 the aegis transmit information to the architect. So maybe that’s how he heard it

I think shulk's voice cameo at the end of the game is on par with this simply because it solidifies that both games happen simultaneously. They both have a historic battle that took place centuries ago, people left from that battle that seek vengeance, and a group that comes together to combat them and reunify the world. However its the fact that they happen simultaneously that makes you realize, it's a race, even if they dont know it. In the final boss, they need to stop malos before klaus can make Elisium, but if zanza dies before they stop malos, klaus wont be around to do that. And since we hear Shulk cryout that hes about to kill zanza, we know the final bosses also happen at the same time. It's also kind of works vise versa too because if Shulk kills zanza before Elisium is created, there would be no world for alvis to put them in when he wishes for one with no gods. All of chapter 10 is honestly just a masterpiece

The cutscene impact is even greater for those that played Xenogears or Xenosaga, as it not only connect Xenoblade 1 and 2, it connects the entire franchise with the Conduit resemblance to the Zohar, the major plot point of the rest of the series, something also confirmed in the Siren model kit lore, as it tells the discovery of the Conduit being identical word by word as it is described in Gears and Saga, this single cutscene connects two decades of games made in three different companies, something almost impossible, I would argue this would make it the most important cutscene of not just Blade 2, but the whole Xeno franchise.

For those who played Xenosaga Episode III- you can essentially think of what Klaus did which served as the impetus for Xenoblade 1 and 2, and he did so by effectively performing what the bads in Episode III tried to do by using the Zohar to power Zarathustra and recreate the universe in his image (though because Galea wanted to oppose him and the supercomputer, powered by the Zohar, was powering them both, he didn't get to recreate the universe solely as how he wanted, hence him becoming Bionis and her, Mechonis).

I don't think the other two beanstalks are significant. They were just support for the orbital ring. It would need at least 3 to be stable. However! If you watch the cutscene where klaus explains the history of the world of XC2, he mentions retribution from 'on high' which rex notes, and looks at the plane of existence klaus is depicting holographically. If youre a Xeno series fan, you might remember how U-DO is a higher order being and the Zohar( the conduit) is said to have some connection to the multiverse. I think Klaus knows about the Conduits origin, and its disappearance is directly related with the events of Xenosaga 3. The inter connected Xeno universe is fascinating and I'm sure it'll be a hoot to learn it all and piece things together for yourself. Whether they end up being true or not, there are significant breadcrumbs left everywhere.
@aleseaux
@aleseaux 4 жыл бұрын
They may not be significant, but they lend major fan theory a hand. Soma Bringer, MonolithSoft's game directly before Xenoblade, also featured a space tower and an orbital ring, shown off very early in the game. Xenoblade 2 took a lot from Soma Bringer's control scheme and the idea of potion heals (though done very differently) and Soma Bringer's story and world coincide with the general feel of the entire Xenoseries, having Soma (a different word for ether) and even a Gnosis-like enemy known as Visitors. While I don't think Soma Bringer is linked to Xenoblade at all, it's cool to see what they took from Soma Bringer to make Xenoblade games a better reality, and from the looks of it, Future Connected may be bringing back a Visitor-like entity (the portals, the bird enemy that was shrouded in a dark energy in Alcamoth).

I know this video is several months old, but you’ve did an amazing job of elaborating on what I’ve thought about this cutscene for so so many months. The cutscene feels like it encapsulates one thing that I love about XBC2: the humanistic side of it. I love both games, but XBC2’s cast of antagonists had much more complex and humanistic motivations over that of XBC1. And in a single moment, one of the series’s biggest monsters is contextualized into a sympathetic and well-intentioned human being whose flaws got the better of him. I’ve always saw Zanza more as a symbol than an actual character- a symbol of humanity’s obsession and arrogance with the power of technology. However this cutscene shapes him into an actual character, one that people can potentially relate to. Zanza uses technology for the purpose of elevating himself (thus becoming less human and more divine). While the Architect did physically become more divine as a result of the experiment, he remained humble and retained his sense of humanity and compassion for others and used technology for the purpose of saving people. “If we have the power to save people, why not use it?” I think that question parallels some of the dilemmas in scientific fields and research. With new technology and medicine, there is the potential to save people, yes, but there is also the potential of horrible unintended consequences that we need to research thoroughly beforehand. As Klaus demonstrates, the well-intentioned and gung ho approach to technology is often not the best approach. As someone who works in biology, a lot of science is recognizing the limitations in our knowledge. Maybe we can be a little proud of what we have found, but I feel it is a very humbling experience knowing the limitations of what we know. The Architect represents this humbling part of science- he made a mistake (though most mistakes in science don’t destroy the universe) and recognizes that he, as a human, is able to make a mistake. Zanza, the mad scientist, refuses to acknowledge his mistake- he, as a god, believes that he is omniscient- his abilities (granted to him through science and technology) is perfect. And oops, in his arrogance of refusing to recognize his flaws and mistakes, technology in the form of Alvis backfires at him again. I apologize how much I rambled! I’m just really excited to have found someone talking about this cutscene in so much depth. You’re doing great work!

It wouldn't be until the cutscene when we see the full body of the architect and how the other half of him was sent into another dimension and would die soon that I realized "oh they really are connected. they just rebooted klaus' origin". Because he uses his left hand. And I realised, that it's the left side of Klaus that is missing in Xenoblade 2. It is the left side of Klaus that becomes Zanza. I know it is probably me looking way too far into this. Something this video has made me think about is how will the cutscene play out in 1DE? I originally thought it'd be changed to be 2's with the different artstyle, but after watching this and reading a thought on discord a couple weeks back that 1's cutscene is how Zanza remembers it and 2's is Klaus's recollection or the actual events, it makes me think we're going to get a third version of this cutscene coming up. One that has the feel of the original, and the setting of the newer. Maybe the music cues too, they were amazing. Now, while I didn't feel all the same things you did during the cutscene in 2, it being the first Xeno game I ever played (which I'm rectifying, I finished 1 like 6 weeks before 1DE was announced (which I'm going to buy 100% anyway) and plan to attempt X next year, and then I'll move into Gears and Saga eventually), the way the scene was set up very much gave the concepts without it. The "We're locked out by Professor Klaus" felt like a "oh shit what's going on, why is someone important doing something" type of line through the delivery and the cut after it, and the reseeing of the stuff from the vision was very much a clue-in. And then, after playing through the DLC content (mainly talking Shulk blade), researching the games more, and eventually playing through 1, I felt the resemblance between Shulk and Klaus, and the major difference that is Zanza. In a way, Shulk and Zanza don't just make up Klaus as a whole, they're both used as Klaus. Zanza is very much the prodominant idea in 1's Klaus, and Architect Klaus feels very similar to Shulk in certain actions (while flashback Klaus in 2 feels like the balance of them). It kind of fits, as Klaus was split in two, his personality duplicates would hold part of the personality he had and always use those two parts. I'm gonna go rewatch these cutscenes in full now

I really like the idea of each counterpart of Klaus remembering the scene differently as I feel it reinforces the disposition we're exposed to. I also appreciate hearing your perspective as somebody who played 2 first because it's hard for me to fully picture what that must've been like. I could speculate, but all of my friends that played 2 began with 1 so it's really refreshing to hear about your experience. I think you're right on Shulk embodying some of Klaus within him. I'm really curious as to what changes they'll make with this scene, the relationship between the Architect and Zanza, and Shulk and Zanza's connection.

I have just finished the main story of XCDE so I can finally get to watching your videos on the original game of the Xenoblade series. When I finished the game this was precisely the cutscene I wanted (maybe even needed) to see analysed, so it is quite the fortunate incident that this happens to be the first video of yours I decided to watch. For one reason or another, I am one who is prone to experiencing media series in an unorthodox order, so this cutscene's significance was something I couldn't fully comprehend when I first played through XC2, but I knew I would have to come back to it once I had beaten the original. Huh.. So Shulk is like a Klaus clone then? And the Saviorite Rebels capturing the Beanstalk. I'm pretty sure that'll be Xenoblade 3 lol. A prequel to the whole franchise. There's so much ubtold about the previous universe and why there were wars. I wanna walk in Morytha. Have space gundam battles outside of the Beanstalk. Explore Elysium before it died. Etc

I've been loving watching your videos because it makes me excited about the story and the characters all over again and reminds me why I love these games so much. I played Xenoblade 2 before finishing 1 and even then, the way this scene is built got me thinking that it was some kind of grand reveal, and I had to google it soon after because I just had to know. I played XC1 on the Wii immediately after just to live it myself. This video got me excited as if I had actually experienced that reveal like it was meant to. Seriously, I love your content!

I'm pretty sure Pnuema's holographic model of the beanstalk in the escape sequence shows the outer rings of the space station, tho its been a good while since i played the game and i only remember it showing the low orbit station and one other ring alsoooo the last couple of chapters in xc2 had me shaking so much, im kinda glad that they were mostly cutscenes since for me it wouldve been more jarring to have a lot of gameplay thenn xc2's pacing is tangentially related to your video now btw lol

as someone who was THERE, who was used to Xeno game after Xeno game of being Final Fantasy levels of sequelization (as in there was none), seeing this made me flip. I had finished Xenogears the week before XC2's release. I had played XC1 and XCX before this, in 2015. I was used to how non-connected all the games were. Then one night, I decided to stay up till 3 am (I had to get up for school at 6:30 the next morning) to continue playing through chapter 9, when this happened. For context, I thought the flashback in chapter 7 was like the Aegis cutting the planet in half, so all I had REALLY seen was Malos's Monado. It was like the wooden Monado in XCX, so while I was freaking out, I kept my calm. Then this happened, and I just had to scream... at 3 am in the morning. Thank god no one woke up. Needless to say I didn't get any sleep that night, and this just strikes me as one of the most powerful moments. They brought the Zohar and XC1 into XC2. The madmen did it. I totally am looking forward to XCDE, but I do fear that they may tease the reveal too much. I mean my girlfriend has only played XC2 and is very much looking forward to XC1. We already know of Alvis's core reveal before the end of the game... and like I love it, but that's way too much in my opinion. Alvis's reveal was a secret, but now anyone who hasn't already played XC1 will get clued in fairly quickly. I wish they kept his changed necklace for his appearance in the epilogue. XC1 is built on its plot twists, and I REALLY hope they don't ruin the foundation too much. then again the ending could be even more overhauled than it was in XC2, so we shall see if they were justified. I trust Monolith, but I am worried for first time players.

Hey man, great video! This is my fist time viewing the channel and the production is great! Something that stuck out to me is while you were talking about Klaus and Galea, you say the new perspective and revised events show a different, redeemable side to Klaus. I don't mean to sound like I'm trying to invalidate this part of the video, but this scene is being shown to the XC2 cast through Klaus' perspective, as he remembered it. In contrast, the XC1 scene is shown to Shulk by Alvis (Who is the station's computer/ another aigis? What is this lore?). What I'm getting at is that the XC2 scene could be Klaus remembering it differently compared to Alvis and trying to justify himself as a tragic hero, so to speak. Then again, The XC1 scene could be changed by Alvis to push Shulk's actions considering how openly Alvis defies Zanza at the end. That's all, thanks for reading all the way through! Again, great video!

Hey everyone! I saw a couple comments pertaining to the original thumbnail, so I decided to change it for the time being as to avoid spoiling newcomers. When I had originally asked people for feedback, they mentioned that the thumbnail would be fine, but perhaps things have changed now that the video is reaching the eyes of more people. I might eventually change it back once people get their chance to place the sequel since it one of my favorites pieces I've done, but this seems like the best choice for now. Thank you guys for the feedback and I apologize if the previous thumbnail happened to spoil anything for you.

I know I'm late to the game here, but I think there is substantial evidence that Klaus did not birth a new universe. Aside from the fact that there are parallel dimensions comprising both worlds of XC1 and XC2, the fact that Shulk is able to explore the rest of the solar system suggests to me that the experiment created a singularity and its event horizon does not extend even to the moon (again see the locations you visit just prior to the final battle with Zanza). I also thought this might be the first video that discussed another detail I have yet to find elsewhere: the tie-in with XCX. The space battle in the background of the chapter 10 intro is very reminiscent of the opening scene in XCX. You also learn in a late cutscene in XCX (which I haven't watched it years but am sure I could find it if necessary) where it talks about how Elma supplied Earth with a lot of the technology used in the Klaus era scenes. This suggests to me that all the escape ships (incl. the White Whale) fled from the same scene depicted in the chapter 10 intro and escaped beyond the event horizon of the singularity and so inhabit the same universe as XC2 (Morytha proves that it is the same world as the space station[s]/beanstalk[s]). I don't know if this means the saviorites are among the enemy force at the beginning of XCX, but it's very plausible.

I think I’ve figured out how all the series’ Monados came into existence. There were three Aegis crystals to start with, 2 already states that two of them each belong to Pyra/Mythra and Malos. As for the third, it was sent to Shulk’s world and (somehow) was split into three pieces: the Bionis Monado, the Mechonis Monado, and Alvis’s consciousness that would later become Shulk’s third Monado.

I loved the change between the version of this scene between xc1 and XC2 which Adam Howdens performance got across PERFECTLY! Xc1 Klaus was an arrogant mortal intent on achieving god godhood for himself, while xc2 Klaus was a desperate scientist who thought he might’ve found an easy solution to a horrible problem and gave into the temptation to bring all of humanity closer to divinity

@Kurayamiblack 4 жыл бұрын
I know I'm posting this late af, but I got a theory. I think the ending of both games destroys Shulk's universe and brings everything within it into the XC2 universe but in a different location. I think humanity recovers and advances again over many generations and right when they're on the edge of making decent mech suits again, Chronicles X happens as the distant future to both other games. Furthermore, I what if the Conduit may have been connected to our universe at multiple points and planet Mira was one of them and was affected by Klaus activating it which is why the planet has so many weird properties? Why are Nopon in all 3 games and a Telethia is on Mira? Maybe the Nopon were brought into existence by Klause triggering the Conduit and they were scattered across all 3 worlds at the same time and just lived their lives from there. The Telethia may have been thrown onto Mira when Shulk beat Zanza and just lived there growing and evolving by itself during the time between the ending of the 2 games and the beginning of X. I know there's no concrete evidence for any of this, but I like to explain how this all COULD tie in together. Thanks for humoring me with a read 😁
