We are going to have a look at the Märklin remote controlled crane 7051 this week, we’ll cover a bit of history, working principles, what can go wrong and what to do to fix common problems, in other words, this is another Little helper video.
The Märklin remote controlled Crane was always one of my favourites, it is a must have accessory for any Märklin enthusiast, and a nice addition to any layout in terms of decoration or play factor.
This video is quite long, of course it can be watched in one sitting, but it is also meant to used as a reference, so I have created chapters that will help you skip to the relevant topic.
I hope you enjoy/find the video useful.

Hi, thanks for your excellent video. Especially, how to do a maintenance job. I have a 7051 on my own model railway but changed the control box with an old joystick. The advantage is a more smoothly handling the movement. And, in addition, even my 4-year-old son can operate the crane very easy. Keep up with your videos, I really like them.

I had no idea that a simple accessory like the crane could be made with such precision and level of refinement. I guess that this has to be expected by Marklin!

Great video. Thanks very much. I find the crane's turning and raise/lower speeds unrealistic...since you mentioned the motors are standard locomotive motors, I am wondering if I lower the supply voltage by connecting to the analog output of a spare analog transformer would be harmful on any way....

You do great videos. My crane swivels and the magnet and light work but I am using one of the control boxes that you show that you said there are differences. My problem is my crane hook will not go up or down. Is this because it is the wrong control box? Thanks!!

Thank you for this great Video about a very nice design by Märklin of this historic crane. Excellent didactical presentation about its history, about its working potential problems. I have the exact same crane I purchased new in the late 80s. One little point: This is a fool-proof design where there are 2 clutches: one at the base to rotate freely the cabin and the second one in the cabin on the whinch in case the motor was not stopped in time. Also, part of the box, there is a long screw, 2 fiber washers and a nut, to bolt the crane to its box. Here you may see a video about a hump yard next to the crane operated by Rocrail kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYeoon6gj95qis0 Here is a video on another Märklin crane: the large coaling station 76510, here in full automatic operation kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6i9iJRjr8ual8k

Hi, thanks a lot 🙏 I am not sure about the cabin whinch clutch you are referring to: there is none in any of the cabins on my cranes, you can see in the video what happens if i don't stop the whinch at 29:55. This might have been a feature of the very first version though, but I don't have one to check. I had seen your humpyard video (I am subscriber 😀), nice job!
@The3rdRail

Correction... Looking at the parts list, there should be a whinch clutch. Looks like it might be stuck on all my cranes, sounds like a good topic for an additional video... I shall check my cranes now, thanks for pointing this out.🙏
@johnjeanb
@johnjeanb Жыл бұрын
@@The3rdRail Look into your video at 28:39 near the slanted gear, you may see a fiber washer, a metal washer, a spring. All this makes a clutch (maybe yours is adjusted too tight or glued by dried oil).
@The3rdRail
@The3rdRail Жыл бұрын
Yep, I quickly had a look at one of my cranes and the clutch was indeed stuck. I had always assumed this was standard behaviour as all the cranes that passed through my hands behaved the same way. You learn something new every day, aren't KZbin comments great? Thanks again.
@The3rdRail
@The3rdRail Жыл бұрын
Hi, I was finally looking into making a correction, and I think we were wrong about the purpose of the clutch in the cab. You'd have to pull very (very!) hard for the clutch to disengage if the winch is not stopped in time, I tried! It was very scary, and the motor stopped moving before the clutch disengaged in most cases. So, I don't think this is the main purpose of the clutch. Instead, I think the clutch is there to prevent the winch from lifting when the cab is turning. The clutch only engages when the lifting shaft (the one with a worm gear coming though the base of the cab) is rotating, the clutch will grip to and set the winch shaft in motion. If the lifting shaft is idle, the clutch doesn't grip, and the gear connected to the worm gear on the lifting shaft will turn freely around it when the cab is moving, it will not engage with the winch shaft, preventing the hook from lifting or lowering. The clutch gear adjustment is only there to position the gear in relation the to lifting shaft, I think the cab will wobble when lifting if the gear is out of position. So, this is another maintenance point to check in any case. Take care.
