They actually say why they teamed up together, "nothing better than cheating a cheater". His father found out the Commodore was going to rob the game long before it happened, then he and Maverick cooked up a way to "cheat the cheater".

James Garner was the original Maverick. I didn't know how I'd feel about him playing a secondary character in this movie, but it payed off in the end.

Love this movie! One of my favorite westerns! Based on the TV series of the same name. A whole lot of cameos in this movie, ranging from country stars to actors from other westerns. Critics called it "Fast, funny! It's Lethal Weapon meets Butch Cassidy." It was even nominated for Best Costume Design at the 1995 Oscars. Also RIP Richard Donner, James Garner and James Coburn.

I love this movie. James Garner was the original Maverick in the late 50's early 60's TV show. There are so many easter eggs in this movie. Several of the poker players were from old westerns shows with Country singer Clint Black (He sings the song during the game and is the 1st one tossed off board). One of the most recognized was Denver Pyle who played Uncle Jesse in the Dukes of Hazard (westerns as well). He was the old man who was caught cheating and jumped off the boat. Danny Glover was the bank robber. He and Mel were in the Lethal Weapon movies together so when they were looking at each other, that was a nod to that.

She didn't sleep with them both but she did kiss them both . This movie is a hoot. All the old western actors and cameos make it even more fun. It was Danny Glover in the beginning. He and Mel did all the Lethal Weapon movies together. "I'm too old for this shit."

This is from Richard Donner, same man to direct two Superman movies and Lethal Weapon. But this movie is also just a way for him to celebrate a genre he loved. I think that's what I love about the movie the most, you can see everyone having fun in it - they used to play this movie often back in the day on HBO/Showtime. I watched it every time, it's really quotable. It celebrates the western genre well while also playing as a cloaked sequel and respecting the TV show before it.

Why did his dad get involved in the Commodore's scheme to steal the money? Because a.) they found out about it and being honorable folks wanted to put a stop to it. and b.) to beat him at his own game. As Maverick put it, "My old pappy always used to say, "there is no more deeply satisfying religious experience... than cheatin' on a cheater." As for Annabelle, she just happened to get caught up in it. As for how she knew they were family...she told you. No, she didn't sleep with daddy. She just happened to be standing over them in while they were each in bathtubs. She glanced at one, then the other and made the comment. This movie was based on the TV series of the same name. The great connection is that in the series, James Garner who played Maverick's dad actually played Maverick himself in the series.

Just cause they're father & son doesn't mean they were together. They're both conmen, who may have done a little extra to help each other at times since they're related. But they're still both greedy con artists and he was legit robbing his son. But after all the back and forth at the end, they just happened to end up on the same side and willing to share.

The sherif went along with the plot to steal the money to arrest the commodore, he was approached so he went under cover with his sons (maverick) help.. as far as the girl goes she said they both similar because she looked in the tub and seen they were both similar in multiple ways. She only slept with maverick.

@deving9793 battle, you might check out the movie "Rounders". Matt Damon and Ed Norton about pro poker players. It's probably the most grounded movie about poker players (who don't consider themselves to be gamblers), and the DVD commentary had World Series of Poker champs praising almost all of it. Watching it won't help you learn the hand strengths, but you might better understand the difference between gambling and what pro poker players do, and what separates them from 'suckers' (players who operate on luck instead of bluff, calculated risk, and skill). (Though I've seen nothing to indicate you'd want to try playing poker, you should definitely watch it before you ever do.)

If I had to guess at actual motivation for the dad teaming with the commodore to rob the game (and his son) I think a justifiable reason is that for one, if Maverick didn't win, still gets the money, and second, if the commodore was thinking of robbing it anyways, get in on it as an inside man

I've loved this movie since I was 5 and only just realized why it's so unique. Besides there not being many poker movies, the plot is so funny because- like a game of poker- the plot gets flipped on it's head from scene to scene. You thought your opponent was bluffing while you're holding a pair of aces and the next minute, it turns out Bret hired those goons as bodyguards.

I love Mel Gibson and I love this movie :) No offense to Devin, he's great for these reactions! But I wish that more reactors knew what they were missing out on when they don't know the amazing actors in this film!! Many only know Mel Gibson, some know Jodie Foster & some know James Garner. Some even know Alfred Molina. Most don't know James Coburn at all!! And almost all of them don't know that it's country singer Clint Black being thrown overboard first, or "Uncle Jesse" from Dukes of Hazzard played by Denver Pyle who is the old man with the top hat who is escorted to jump off. Also, Corey Feldman is one of the bank robbers, singers Waylon Jennings & Vince Gill are also in this and that's just the big names that so many people should know!! It's a great movie full of stars that seem to be forgotten, as well as other actors that are in so many movies through the years that people recognize their faces in lots of movies yet don't know their names.
