M1 Enforcer Carbine Pistols

There are rarely any truly original ideas in the gun world, and today's "pistol" ARs and AKs are not among them. Back in the 60s and 70s, companies were marketing the "Enforcer" M1, a pistol version of the WWII M1 Carbine. Of these two, one is made of military surplus parts by Iver Johnson and one made of new-production commercial parts by Universal.

I started my police career in '68, and these were quite popular with coppers. At the time, there was no such thing as the "patrol rifle", we were limited to the police shotgun. These little guys would give quite a lot of firepower in a compact package if the situation warranted. (remember, back then the standard police handgun was a revolver)

I went to the RIA data. Over $1k for each? Really? I remember when these came out. The Universal was a pos then. I guess that line in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is true: "Look at this. It's worthless - ten dollars from a vendor in the street. But I take it, I bury it in the sand for a thousand years, it becomes priceless. Like the Ark."

the price tag is so steep because they are no longer made so when they are gone then they are gone. This is why gas was around $1.19 a gallon in the 70's which was an expensive hike from what it was but today you would be over the moon to find gas that cheap. But if its a POS then its not really worth it unless buying for nostalgia.

When I was in Vietnam (1968-69), this was one of the most popular conversions around especially the M2 version. Technically these weapons were issued to various South Vietnamese army unitsbut there was always a way to get your hands on one.

There was a bit of popular literature in the time period of these guns which celebrated the exploits of the Mafia, and unique weapons used by Mafia enforcers such as sawed off shotguns, and occasionally, sawed off or "pistolized" rifles in areas where handguns were restricted, such as NYC. Thus, these were really more in keeping with the weapons of Mafia enforcers, but without the legal liabilities of sawed off M1 Carbines.

The Russian Revolution had something very similar, namely sawn-off Mosin-Nagant rifles, nicknamed "Obrez" (Russian, lit. "chopped down"). I always thought they were pretty neat; they look a bit like flintlock-era horse pistols.

That’s true I even seem to remember one famously being used by Boston Winter hill leader, Jimmy ‘Whitey’ Bulger when he murdered a drug addict who was snitching his organisation to the FBI, in a car park. It was brought to light even more recently in the 2012 film ‘Black mass’ where he was played by Johnny Depp, where he basically did a hit a run using one of these sawn off carbines. interesting I didn't know the mafia used pistol versions of rifles cut down. Well if they made handgun laws overly restrictive people get creative. Its like they say to themselves "we don't want you to have a concealable pistol so here are some laws that makes it hard". Assault rifle (a literal verb that they tried to make an adjective), ghost gun (thats just funny because now its a noun/verb attempting to be an adjective again), telescoping stock (really I thought it adjusted length of pull and not used as a scope), pistol grip (this is normal on a fucking pistol, when used in conjunction with the AR or AK its a goddamn rifle grip because its on a goddamn rifle), muzzle device (so generalized its just retarded since its a description of several items and could even mean the cap some companies use to protect the threads), barrel shroud (I'll remember this one next time I shoot a few hundred rounds and I am gonna intentionally set it down in dry grass, maybe when half the forest burns down then they may understand the purpose of it) and high capacity magazine (this is stupid as well since the original standard for the AK was 30 rounds and 20 for the AR, I agree that means they are standard capacity.) Well I guess its what happens when retards make laws.

I like my M1 carbine and wish that the industry and consumers would show this design some love. It's an overall good design that's reliable and easy to shoot. The cartridge is surprisingly more powerful than people give it credit yet recoil is minimal. It feels like shooting a 9mm carbine but it has more than double the effective range.

There are at least two companies making these currently, and I think they are now much better than something like an old Universal model. Those were known for issues. As far as this design suddenly becoming more widespread at this time, it's not going to happen. It's an old design and expensive to produce. A faithful model made today is a grand or more due to the materials and time to make them. The ammo is uncommon and expensive compared to much better cartridges like .223. I love M1 carbines too, but it's always going to be a collectors gun with people simply having more money than brains paying more $$ for a newly made model vs a good condition REAL military surplus rifle. I would rather have a "real" one any day especially when you can get one cheaper!

The very first firearm I ever fired was a gun passed down by my Grandpa, it was an old break action 16' gauge shotgun made by Iver Johnson. The sight blade that ran the whole length of the barrel must have been a full 2 mm higher on one side of the barrel as one looks down it, but it worked just fine, taken quite a few birds in its day. I would really like that Iver Johnson Enforcer. I will have to pay attention to when the auction is, though as always I fear the price will go to high. It is a fun gun, but with a stock on it, that would make an awesome home defense rifle. .30 Carbine is a good round for short range engagements like in a house.

+Forgotten Weapons I understand that this is a older video but I would like to tell you that my father was a police officer in the south bend Indiana area in the mid 70s and was also a police officer in Chicago in the late 70s early 80s the enforcer was a go-to weapon for a "car gun". Later my father replaced it a Ingram mac-10 45acp simi automatic of course, but they used the small guns for a quick grab fire arm that they personally purchased. back in those days they carried revolvers and its was not uncommon for police officers to shot from a vehicle or, sadly get ambushed at stop light or sitting in there vehicles. it most enforcemers lived shoved in between the bench seat because police car at the time did not have center consoles. keep up the good work and I love the history lessons that come with your great videos.

I had a WWII surplus .30 carbine. The only problem I had with it was it didn't like 30 rd mags. Using 15 rd mags it functioned perfectly. A shorter barrel carbine with a collapsible stock would be handy. The .30 carbine round is more powerful than a 9 mm. 110 grain hollowpoints (instead of FMJ) zipping along at about 1900 fps will knock a bad guy down.

One other thing to keep in mind about the stamped slides is that the cam slot has a habit of splitting or cracking with heavy use. At least that isn't as bad as some of the late commercial production National Ordnance carbines that had a much reduced slide that cycled too fast and would pound the gun to death.

My Universal front collar (barrel band) came lose on a hot barrel, and the front sight moved, so I put a springfield 03A3 sight on it. I put a barrel sling mount behind it, and a stock end sling stud similar to the Iver Johnson,.The Universal receiver is factory drilled and tapped for a scope mount, that an AimPoint fits to. . . .All tweaked up, it is light fast accurate, low recoil, easy recovery, and a real joy.

I have a Universal M1 carbine. It runs perfectly fine with the weird 4 shot plastic mag it came with. But if I try and put one of those Korean mags in it especially the 30 rounder's it wont even chamber the first round. It definitely fun to shoot.

I have a Universal Carbine. It is a fine shooter. To use "banana" magazines the locking lugs have to be filed down to fit into the well. The Universal Enforcer grip looks like they used the leg from a couch or console TV.😑

In WW2 my father was stationed in the Phillipines as the Provost Marshal of an area that still had some active fighting. He had been a Chicago Police officer before being drafted. He said he spent much of his time in a Jeep going from one area to another and wanted a weapon he could easily manuver while at the wheel. He had local craftsman cut down the stock to just a pistol grip and shorten the barrel. He said he could keep in on his lap or next to him with no one noticing. When he was the Enforcer hit the market he wanted to get one so bad.

If anything, the .30 carbine could actually be used as a pistol cartridge and it actually is used in some Ruger revolvers. By comparison, the cartridges used in more modern rifle-pistols are absolutely useless in the barrel lengths used by those guns.

GMdrivingMOPARguy ...YEAH!!! I had the Blackhawk companion to my universal M1000. that thing is SO loud. it doesn't even bang. you pull the trigger and it puts a sonic arrow through your head. I sold it to the next victim. I loved bouncing soda cans to bits with the carbine. my particular carbine was more accurate than it deserved to be. I lived in northeast AZ in a prairie dog infested area. I would visit one place on occasion and try to pop some pps. one day, I stopped by and as it turned out, all I had was the carbine. one dog stood up in the distance and I tried to guess how far it was. very strange circumstance it turned out. I slid the peep to the 250yd mark and aimed about an inch over its head, figuring that I'd either hit him solid or miss. the shot was fired and a moment later, I heard the thump. I started to walk up the hill and changed my mind and took the truck. it turned out to be over 400 yards. the bullet struck center chest. I was amazed at the distance and the accuracy. mostly, I was amazed at the size of the dog. biggest one I'd seen, before or since. regret? yes. I should have taken it to a taxidermist. I would've prolly had a record size trophy. live and learn.

An expired patent is not the same thing as open source. Patents cover general mechanisms, not exact dimensions. The patents have long ago expired from all the small arms in US service, but that doesn't mean you get any special access to a manufacturer's technical drawings.

The universal duel spring is a bit better, but the op rod broke away from the block and my fathers best friend who owns a local gun repair shop had to weld it back together. he said it was a common problem with the universals.

Had a very good friend who recently passed away. He was an US Army Ranger during WW II. He told me once that while fighting in New Guinea he found a carbine that had been damaged. He cut down both the stock and barrel and slept with that weapon while out in the jungle looking for Japanese.

reminds me of a man I met helping a friend with a project at his father in law's house he was showing off his collection... he collected "cowboy guns" he had hundreds of pistols of various makes all over his house and a number of rifles a few shotguns but not as many as pistols.. a lot of them were in display cases or cabinets some were on little pegs on things that looked like game trophy mounts others were stashed in various desk (so many desk) side boards and what not scattered around the house... another friend of mine that was helping as well commented/joked about how would he choose if he had an intruder or what ever and he showed us his "ready" gun kept in a big sideboard drawer that was in a short hallway leading into his kitchen there was a m1 enforcer carbine with a couple of 30 shot mags clipped together...i reckon that would work don't know why he kept it near his kitchen but then again that I know of he never needed it for anuthing but taking up space in that drawer so it all worked out i suppose...i wonder who got that collection???

If gripped with two hands they would be useful as high calibre, obligate semi-auto SMGs (If you can find a use for that) but smaller projectiles are ultimately more applicable to CQC situations anyway. The only benefit I could see would be shooting through thin walls; but many CQC situations include hostages so that kind of rules that out. I'm looking at it from a point of view in line of the creation of these firearm by the way.

The Miami, FL PD was heavily invested into these back in the 60's and 70's for SWAT team weapons. No fancy shorty M-16 or AR-15's back then. The Universal carbines were very popular with the local Cuban refugee community and you could buy a full size one new for $69.95. I have seen many very creative home-made shorties - some with custom carved pistol grips and even stocks with grips as a single unit. Most of these served as cheap house guns or car guns.

These are cool. I'd like to see one with a 6" barrel, and a left side charging handle. Kind of like a modernized cross between an original scorpion and an M1.

What an interesting comment regarding guns as fun. As an engineer, and even as a child, I am attracted to the coolness of gun mechanisms and machining quality. But I absolutely find the intended use as shameful and horribly ignorant in terms of my spiritual philosophy. That doesn't mean I haven't used a gun for killing animals. I have, and I now regret it. I find your channel fascinating. You're intelligent, and now I know, a nice guy as well.

I have to wonder if anyone has ever put fully automatic M2 parts on one (if that's even possible with some modifications.) Although I don't know why you'd take apart a perfectly good M2, but it would make for a neat "fun gun."

Sketchy Use a reproduction M1A1 carbine stock with some mods too, make a FA SBR out of one of these suckers.

I bought one of a guy not knowing what he had. It had a different stock with an extendable stock and forward grip. I have since then taken the m2 parts out now it shoots just like an m1.

a friend of mine had one of those old Enforcer's it was a cool little carbine my Dad diddn't want me to get one so I bought a used Remington 700 in 243 it was a old ADL model with just a fixed power Redfield X6 scope .but I bagged hundreds of Groundhogs and Whitetail's with that old rifle.

The 30. Carbine has been considered closer to an intermediate cartridge than a pistol cartridge. So really those were the AR pistols of their time

In my youth I was informed that the cut down M-1 carbine idea was to provide a somewhat improved weapon system for truck on other military vehicles who might see action but would normally non-front line troop. I trust this only because of the man I grew up with have told me other information that I have proven to be true such as Germans using rounds with wooden bullets.in Normandy / D Day.

These were featured in soo many movies of the day...every time maxwell smart pushed the panic button bringing out "controls" version of special forces, in addition to the scuba divers with spear guns, out trotted the guys with Universal enforcers...thanks for the trip down memory lane 🤩

DO NOT DRAW ATTENTION TO THESE GUNS! If you do people will want them and the price will go up lol. I used to have an Enforcer, God I miss it. It was amazing fun to shoot and ALWAYS attracted attention and started conversations at the range.(i want another)

Eric D It was never a Pistol cartridge. Until Ruger modified it's Revolvers to handle it.

@@jerrysutton7293 And the Automag III. Actually it makes a pretty good pistol cartridge. Very powerful for a pistol cartridge--up there with hotter 357 loads but with less recoil due to the lighter bullet

Absolutelly true, I imagined that I had an original gas system and rifle layout in mind... just to learn that what I had created was just a Holloway HAC-7 with a true AK bolt like the SIGs but alas, the same concept and layout... Indeed there is not much new on the west. There is some interesting stuff in the east like the Korobov rifles (language barrier is an issue because I think there is a fairly active community of enthusiasts on Russia and etc, only we don't hear about them) and other experiments that went nowhere... indeed a shame that museums make those things being forgotten despite safe.

When I was in Vietnam [1969] a few of the snake pilots carried m1 carbine paratrooper model. They would toss the wire stock and chop the barrel, a couple had holsters made. SW model 10 M&P .38 was issue carry. Love Model 10s but not for combat carry !

Totally agreed to what you said in the beginning. However, innovation can be mad if people really want to, but the problem is that our world is relatively peaceful at present. So people lost interest on designing new guns. It is easier to use a existing design after all.
