You can use an M3A1 combination tool to clean the chamber, too. I prefer to use my cleaning rod parts screwed together to clean my M1. USMC - '69 - '73; Vietnam - '71 - '72.

To everyone concerned about cleaning the barrel the "WRONG" way take note. The rifling in the barrel of a Garand is recessed about an inch inside the bore. The barrel isn't rifled to the muzzle and most people who joke about the barrel being completely "washed out" when glancing down the bore to inspect the rifling are oblivious to this fact. That's part of the reason you need a long bore gauge to measure the rifling that remains. If you use a bore guide with solvent soaked patches to remove the powder fouling and then patches soaked in Sweets 7.62 copper solvent and a BORE GUIDE and clean from the muzzle, that's not going to disrupt the steel like a bronze brush and no bore guide will. These is also JB Bore cleaning paste that is mildly abrasive, but use this sparingly, maybe once a year.

My garand still has the original barrel from 45 and after I cleaned the barrel I noticed there was some sort of white "crust" covering the inside and I don't have any idea what it might be. If anyone has any idea what it might be I'd really appreciate it.

It’s going to be hard to diagnose without seeing it in person. It could be the effects of corrosive ammo, lead fouling, etc. It would be in the your best interest to take it to a gunsmith that has a bore scope and inspect it.

Probably a dumb question, but what are you using at 3:00 to catch the extra cleaning spray? Is that a cleaning bin or bowl of some sort?

I'm thinking about getting a Garand sometime in the future, I wouldn't call myself experienced with firearms, but I know how to use one. After how many rounds fired should I perform routine cleaning/maintenance?

Ben Bosley Italian Army did use M1 Garand for training until the '80-ies, it was recommended to clean the weapon after every day of shooting, as there are some components in the propellent of the cartridges that are very corrosive

CMP is running out... They are your best bet for a nice rifle at a good price. I bought 4 a few years back. 3 are my closet queens. The are fun to shoot. Pain to clean and take apart... Bought a couple thousand rounds of the Greek surplus ammo as well. I hope you bought one as it's been a year, but if you haven't, now is a good time. Obama prevented S Korea from bringing in over a million from the Korean War as he stated he doesn't want "weapons of war on the streets" - the supply is drying up.

What would happen if I clean the barrel without taking the rifle apart?
@remkirkthegamer1157
@remkirkthegamer1157 5 ай бұрын
You'd clean the barrel. You don't need to take the Garand apart to clean the barrel, just pull the bolt back and either use a slotted tip with the cleaning cloths or get yourself a receiver insert that can catch the cloths so then they don't fall into the magazine. Other than that, just follow the instructions in the video and you're set.

Can I use the same cleaning rod I use for a Mauser in this? Are the size of the barrels close enough caliber wise?
@christophersine84
@christophersine84 5 жыл бұрын
As long as the rod is long enough, it shouldn't matter. The brush size in relation to the bore is what really matters.
@rslover65

Mausers have been made in calibers from .17 to .50 or bigger. Depends on what yours is chambered in.

@@garagemetalshop7975 just Like the other shooter does. Only from bore to muzzle. Never backward. Angle in the end of the bore is extremely gentle. Cleaning shoud be only just like bullet go. For this you can try Otis system.
