A quick demonstration of zeroing my M1 Garand at 100 yards. I’m referring to Army FM 23-5 and FM 22-71 to move the zero (which is aiming and impact of bullets) to shoot the rifle accurately at 100 yards. This is a little different than setting a battle sight zero.
My particular rifle isn’t a star at accuracy but I adjust the sight to as close as I can to the bullseye.
I am not a qualified gunsmith or expert I am just sharing the way I do this in accordance with the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) recommendations and their M1 Owners Manual.

Zeroing is a bit of a process but worth it. The rear sight windage knob is exclusively for shooting in a wind. Leave it centered while zeroing UNLESS there is a wind (there's a formula to figure out how much windage to use; just search for the old training films). There is a hex key on the front sight you can loosen so it can be adjusted L or R for zeroing. I'd recommend using a pencil or fine tip marker to make reference marks incase you over or under adjust. Run the rear sight all the way down then up 8 clicks as a starting point. Fire a few shots at 50yds and adjust as necessary then move to 75 or 100. Traditional zero range is 200yds. Once you're happy with the group run the rear sight all the way down counting the clicks. Loosen the elevation knob and reposition it so that the number of clicks up will have it indexed to the proper range mark on the knob. Tighten the screw and count the clicks up to make sure it's set right. You're all done.

I wish I could’ve explained it that easily in the video, I was trying to translate the Field Manual into a visual. That’s a great breakdown, thank you!

Sucks for my gas cylinder. It’s been dinged up at some point so it’s peened slightly on the right side. The front sight can’t go over far enough to mechanically zero the rear sight for windage. Fortunately I’m only 3 clicks to the left.

Make sure that you are resting the front of the rifle behind the sling swivle. Resting the rifle on the front handguard puts upward stress on your barrel and oprod, making for inconsistent accuracy.

Excellent advice. I’ll incorporate that into my practice as I am able. Thanks for coming by!

Nice video. I’ve never thought about blackening the sights. I wonder if shoe polish with a bic lighter would work?

It should. And I can say I didn’t really think of it either had the field manual not spelled it out in black and white. Shoot, I’d say even painting them with some flat black paint would probably do as well. Thanks for coming by!

PPU is a Serbian Joint stock company, and they are a major importer of military caliber ammunition for the US civilian market.

Interesting. I’ve done some casual research into PPU- I’m not totally opposed to them but some old school folks who shoot have some very negative things in mind about it. Myself, I know it’s common but to me maybe a little mysterious and I tend to feel a little “influenced” by older shooters, I guess whatever works, works. Thanks for sharing and thanks for coming by!

@@cornfromajar3222 I've never had a real problem with them. They say they use non-corrosive primers, but stay on the safe side, and clean your weapon every time you fire it, and on the same day that you fire it, and it won't be an issue.

@@cornfromajar3222 PPU is the best NATO ammo on the market. It is made better than standard NATO ammo. The cases are much thicker but yet reload very well. It has always been very accurate ammo for me and no failures of any kind. I could care less about Serbian politics. Its good ammo regardless of politics. I always pick it over other brands. Federal maybe second best. Most of my factory 5.56 NATO ammo is PPU and good portion of my factory 9mm.

@@cornfromajar3222it depends on the ammo, their 8mm Mauser is a bit underpowered from what I've seen. Whereas their 7.5 French is about as close as you can get to surplus.
