@rvanleersum 5 жыл бұрын
SMLE isn't part of the formal nomenclature, it literally refers to the fact that several variants of the Lee Enfield had the shorter barrel coupled with overall length of the rifle, including the N. 4 Mk 1 and the N. 1 Mk III (previously the III - changed in 1926 off the top of my head?) He gets some of his info wrong about its use, but it's ultimately trivial.

When I was in secondary school back in the 1960's we had a rifle range and several WW2 Lee Enfield 303's. They were great guns to shoot with. Unfortunately, it was before I started to wear glasses to correct my myopia so I never made the school team, but my friend Andy Wheeler was a crack shot.

I may be able to help you with that. There's a local pawn shop here that still has two cases of that ammo for something like 150. If I remember correctly, that's a fair price. I like ribbing the fanboys. I had one m44, m38 and the 91 30. I won a Finn and realized the Finns really knew what to do with these rifles. At the old prices they were a deal. Now, I think for the money and ammo availability, a Swedish Mauser makes more sense. Unless you already have one.

I've always preferred the No 1 Mk III SMLE to the No. 4. I like the ladder sights more, plus the peep on the No. 4 being zeroed beyond 200 yards sucks for novice marksmen. One of the few cases were the first iteration was better than the second. No wonder the Australians refused to switch in WWII

@@iananderson5050 I fully agree with you, I prefer the Lee Enfield number 1 mark lll* over the number 4 mark l, for a much different reason though, my farsighted eyes still get a fairly decent sight picture with the rear sight mounted way forward towards the center of the rifle, but with the number 4 's rear sight mounted right up close to my eye, the rear sight is just a blurr. My number 1 mark lll* was made by BSA in 1941. It is a real joy to shoot it.

Look at the bolt on the SMLE and it's arc of rotation. That's why it's the only bolt action rifle that you can cock whilst still holding the sight picture and why you could shoot so fast. Not a target rifle, not a target rifle - a battle rifle.

I bought a 'Bubba-ed" Enfield No.4 Mk1* by Long Branch with black walnut stock for a mere $200. Granted, Ol' Bubba had it drilled and tapped for a WWII style scope mount, and had removed the iron sights completely (even the front one), so I had to spend another $100 to buy an original milled rear sight and all the parts to assemble the front sight, and he also shortened the front of the stock to half to reduce weight, but for $300, this thing cycles better than most modern $2,000 bolt actions, and the .303 British cartridge is just a fantastic balance of power, recoil, and report. Very smooth shooter, and I think ol' Bubba accurized it somehow, because this thing shoots about 1.5"-2" groups at 100 yards, which is a lot better than most Enfields, from what I've heard. Really, the action and barrel are the most important parts, being the heart and soul of any gun, so I suppose I don't care if he sporterized it.

Technically, SMLE stands for the "Short, Magazine, Lee Enfield" and it relates only to the 1907 pattern, not to the long Lee's that preceded them and the Numbers 4, 5 and a few 6's that succeeded them - basically the same gun throughout. The SMLE was generally known as the "Smelly" to the troops and served in both World Wars, and, by Australians, in Korea and Malaya.

I also need a stock for it, i'm looking for a vintage stock that would have been used to keep the historical accuracy as well as value. Also, a rifle like this, is it good to shoot it, or will it damage it's value? Should i get an every day shooter instead of using this one?

Holy crap, I didn't know you could de-cock the rifle by holding the trigger while closing the bolt! I just recently bought my first bolt action rifle, an Enfield No.4 Mk1* made by Long Branch in 1943, and I thought you de-cocked it by holding the striker firmly, pull the trigger, and let it ride down to half cock, then to fully de-cocked. Kinda like de-cocking a Colt SA Army where you ride the hammer down slowly. I've really been enjoying learning about all these surplus rifles, and can hardly wait to add a M1, K98, and Mosin to the collection! The M1 is gonna be the real difficulty. Maybe I can get chummy with one of the old farts at the trap and skeet range to see if they have a M1 they'd be willing to part with for a bargain price...

Interesting, but the real question is: Will most young firearms collectors be interested in buying a "historic rifle" to collect, or will they want a rifle to shoot that's part of a firearms collection? (AK, AR, etc...) As you said; Most surplus rifles are now very overpriced and very expensive! A decent K98 Mauser, M1 Garand or Lee-Enfield .303 is beyond reach of the new young collector. Most will miss out on owning a piece of WWII history in their firearms collection. Only the Mosin Nagant is a historic rifle that although now overpriced, is still within the price range that the average young Joe or Jane can still afford and have fun shooting too.
@MarksmanTV

Jay USN-ET2 Interesting question. I don't think these rifles are "overpriced", they are selling for what the current market is willing to pay. As more and more rifles end up in private collections, there are less available to go around. Remember just 5 years ago, you could go into a gun store and find milsurps hanging from almost every wall... As a gun store owner, I hardly see any milsurps come in to my store, and none of them are from distributors and importers. If future generations lose an interest in WWII firearms, then of course the pricing will go down. I think its safe to say that only those interested in the history will buy one. They are just too expensive to shoot. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hey mate good video really enjoyed it. Was wondering if you wouldn't answer a question for me, no worries if you can't. But a few months ago i missed out on getting a really nice rifle. It was an original world war one lee enfield smle but the sniper rifle version it was listed as the T version but i believe the correct term would have been HT. Anyway it was for sale for £1500 because it had been retouched (lost collector value as a result i believe) but it had been retouched in the 70s' by parker hale (whom i dont think made that model of lee enfield but im quite sure at the time were making the last iteration of the enfield to see british service the L42A1 so they knew what they were doing), and done extremely well. The optics had had the lenses replaced, brass fittings polished and so on and i believe they did it out of original parts they'd found somewhere, really a lovely rifle and well worth the dough. But i was wondering how much a rifle like that, so its an original rifle but one thats been retouched, would sell for do you reckon on your side of the Atlantic? Because even though it had obviously had its value reduced by the clean up i was shocked it was that cheap really and made me wonder if there's not a decent market for looking around for rifles like that and shipping them over.

Hey thanks for the feedback and for watching the video - glad you enjoyed it. Pricing is going to be very reletive and I am sure very different between the US and the UK (which is where I am presuming you are from). Here, an all original, authentic No4 MkI T, with original transit chest, optic case and really everything, in excellent original condition, will command about $4,000 which is about 3,000 pounds. An original rifle, which is all correct but just refinished might be worth about $2,000-ish so aboout 1500 pounds... So that would sound like a fair market price by American standards... But I don't know what the normal market is like over there. If you were to purchase one in the US, keep it mind, it would need to be exported, which means it will have to go through a dealer with an export license and I am sure the fees for both export from the US and import into the UK would be substantial. Most dealers in the US will not ship outside the US for this reason. Thanks again for watching and hope that helps!

Cheers for the speedy reply mate good on you, yeah i'm british australian but living in the uk. I've watched a couple more of your vids in the interim and its a good channel you have going here, definitely going to sub. If i could give you any advice as a self appointed youtube gun channel aficionado it would be to steer away from gun politics in general (if you want to get the international viewership that is its not really neccesary for a big audience though as gun politics does seem to be a big draw with american gun enthusiasts) and just try and keep your consistency of upload up because youtube seems to unsubscribe me from people pretty randomly but generally its people who's videos i havent seen in a while, but your presentation really is great mate. Top level table tops as it were. But anyway you know that's kind of the answer i wanted, i wasn't so sure that that was a regular market price for the uk so its not like it was going to be a sideline but it seems that that's probably about right if its similar prices over your way. Which is actually really affordable i reckon, i honestly thought something like that would start at around 5 grand. Personally i kind of like the idea of having the idea one of these genuine old rifles that's actually to the grade of how it would have been when it was first released more than having one thats all worn down over the years. But i can see why people put value on that history i suppose and its not something that can be replicated. But yeah cheers for that mate and keep up the good work, i'll be following ya.

Cahzinar X I’m not quite sure, but my best guess is that the gewehr 43 came late to the war and the cost and time to get the entire Wehrmacht equipped with these just wasn’t feasible. Especially with the stg 44 being developed and showing more promise. I’ve also read and watched videos on how the gewehr isn’t the most reliable rifle and was known to have some fragile parts, which is the complete opposite of what you need in a military rifle. But this is just my best guess, I couldn’t tell you for certain that this is why.

"K" is for kurz , the "short" Mauser action. '98 is for model of 1898. "kar is for (review the treaty restrictions here please, calling the 24" barrel a "carbine" was a bit of a "fib") Karabiner (carbine). What matters is it is the 98 action, which is still in production. I have never heard of M98. M48 is a post war Yugo K98 type, some were unissued (new) and often the best (undamaged).

Not many people know that the old SMLE was the favourite rifle of the legendary buffalo hunters of the top end of the Northern Territory. These champion blokes though nothing of mounting the most outlaw, unbroken brumbies and galloping on them alongside stampeding buffalo and casually shooting a buffalo with a deadly accurate spine or head shot from an old SMLE - one handed! I've heard of a lot of Seppos moaning about the feather-like weight of the SMLE, but let's face, here I'm talkin' about Real Men - Real Aussie Men! Not one of 'em thought an old .303 was a burden. These were Blokes who shaved with a blow torch, rolled their smokes with gunpowder, ate galvanized nails for breakfast, pissed battery acid and shit broken glass! Local councils had to make it illegal for these Blokes to spit in the streets cos they kept burning holes in the roads! Of course, all Aussie Men are like this, even if the old time buffalo hunters have gone. We exist because God created us so all the Seppos would have someone to gaze up at in reverently silent awe!........Oh...and we still have a lot of those old SMLE's, so tread carefully!

The M1 Garand was the least prolific rifle of the Allied soldiers fighting in Europe because there was more Commonwealth and other soldiers the British supplied carrying bolt action .303s than US soldiers carrying M1 Garands, at least until the last couple months of the war. Overall, compared to the Germans, Canadians and English the Americans suffered disproportionately high casualties in Western Europe. Simply put, speed is fine, accuracy is final.

@adznz11

Correct. Plus its a bolt action so it required less maintenance, More accurate generally out at range, More reliable in muddy condition's and less power lost due to not being a gas operating system. British and some commonwealth troops like New Zealand and Canadian troop's had to qualify at quite an astounding rate of accurate fire that would just about keep up with a semi auto. This is exactly the reason the British empire did not replace the No4 with the M1 because they where tended. You have to remember that this is a highly refined version of the most successful battlefield bolt action rifle in service. While the Garand was groundbreaking and the time of the semi automatic gas operated rifle had defiantly come this was still a very practical battle rifle for the time and conditions.

@@billmelater6470 there is allways some in a gas system though. And it was probably pretty negligible for most intents and purposes it would have been part of the consideration. Not to mention the reliability factor in battlefeild conditions. The M1 was a fantastic battle rifle of its time but you have to remember that 1 the troops where used to the no 4 you would only consider retraining a standard BR if the advantages where considerably better enough to warrant it. And in this case it was just not enough. They made the right decision to stick with the no 4 i think overall. The increase in rate of fire didnt outway all the other pros. Not to mention the no 4 had better capacity which alot of people overlook as well. The no 4 lee enfeild was a superb battle rifle that was well tested. If it aint broke don't fix it but good on the yanks for going down the M1 route in the end we never saw another bolt action BR after the M1 so they where heading in the right direction but the no 4 was an outstanding bit of kit. Hard to argue the decision to retire at that point in the war.
@billmelater6470
@billmelater6470 4 жыл бұрын
@@adznz11 You're really not losing anything on a Garand with that gas system. That would be like thinking the SMLE suffered because it was shortened from the Long Lee. That last 3/4" really won't make a difference. And what you gain in recoil reduction cannot be understated. I wouldn't think that retraining troops on a rifle is very big deal. Especially with a semi-auto (and those sights), the learning curve is pretty short. First day out with mine and it was sighted in, ready to go with no hiccups. Never held one before that in my life. The worst part about switching rifles has to do with manufacturing and distribution. Plenty of soldiers were also trained on the Sten as well as a variety of others so I'd say it would be selling them short to think they couldn't learn something new. Just my opinion. Personally, I don't have any issues with the Enfield. I have 2 "Irish Contract" No4. Mk2's and it's up there with my favorites (the aperture sight helps for sure!). When you consider the fact that how well armed you are is only relative to the person you're fighting and since the vast majority of the world was still on bolt guns, then you're not doing bad at all. Especially when you consider the absurd cost difference between the two. I'll be damned if I let someone try to say that British troops were "under-equipped". Though, I don't put much stock in the 2 extra rounds between them given how fast you can reload either. I think the bigger difference is the ability to easily top off.

I agree that the Japanese Type 99 "Arisaka" is too often left out of these comparisons. I have one as well as the four rifles featured here and I would put it up against the Mosin and the Mauser in terms of effectiveness. However, the ten round magazine of the Lee-Enfield is hard to beat, as is the Garand's semi-automatic action. The "Arisaka" did feature a chrome-lined barrel while the M1 did not. Many M1s rusted in the Pacific Theater.
