(Corrections): I did want to make a correction: As swap memory is available for M1 Macs (really all Macs/PCs), iPadOS seems to limit this functionality to actually "killing" the open apps to free up memory, or rather just handling this a bit differently than actual swap as we know it on a full operating system. I do believe this is possible and as more info comes out about memory utilization we could potentially see this functionality. I will say this. At times it’s pretty easy to rag on iPadOS, but honestly (so far) I’m still amazed at the efficiency with the hardware and software on this device. And I’m really looking forward to the next iteration of LumaFusion. They have got a massive jump and I hope they offer some fierce competition if FCPX does come to iPadOS. Keep rocking those faces.

Another interesting vid Kevin. Reports yesterday indicate current iPadOS limits all 3rd party apps to approximately 5GB of memory. Your Lumafusion testing seems to confirm those reports.

Great points, Kevin! Couldn’t agree more. However, my immediate concern is should I stay with the 2021 iPad Pro (either 11” or 12.9”) or return it and wait until after WWDC and see if we get the rumored M1X MacBook Pro models. What? Already? Yet another game changer? Yes, very much a possibility. I have the M1 iPad Pro in hand, but who knows what will happen to production of these new MacBook Pro units. They could get delayed or have limited availability. As far as future proofing goes, that may become a thing of the past. With the way Apple can churn out new iterations of new Apple Silicon, there’s no guarantee on future proofing. Technically, it’s possible (but not likely) that we could see new chips for Macs and the iPad Pro every year, just like iPhones. The game has already changed, starting with the M1. Have a great rest of your weekend, buddy!

I’ve got a video planned on this topic, but what I will say is that I know the rumors are pointing to M1X, but the bigger question is when are they going to launch them even if they’re announced? Hard to say. I will be there with you on the M1X because I want to get to testing on that machine. The question for you however is that are you considering the iPad Pro a laptop replacement and hoping to get more of a MacOS experience, and if this doesn’t happen then would you have purchased knowing that it wasn’t going to replace a laptop, or was this going to be a companion device to a MacBook (eventually)? Although it is an expensive companion for sure.

@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
Not really. It’s like even though I try to open more apps there’s still free memory, or really what happens is that iPadOS will kill the app and the memory goes into swap (cached) and just gets pulled back into free. I’m going to be testing gaming with some of the most graphics intensive games like COD and Asphalt. I haven’t had time to “force” myself to play but those games do utilize some resource for sure. And something like Procreate that’s very demanding isn’t yet optimized for this particular architecture yet, so I haven’t been able to push that either. It’s kind of like we have all of this power, but the developers have only really launched apps that don’t take advantage of the RAM, which is really just limited by the OS. 🤷♂️

Hey Kevin, new subs here!!, also this video was amazing. I have an enquiry, I'm planning to get the 12.9 M1 ipad pro with 8gig(256) for my gf who is an artist and these are the best specs i can max out on right now(after applying student discounts). My question, let's say at some point within the next 2-3 years, Apple is able to bring the pro apps to the M1 ipad pro, will the 8gb i decided to go for instead of the 16 be a concern at that time, as in will i get caught in the middle of having a device that will be the best to run ipad apps but not the pro apps.(Final Cut let's say) Or can the 8gb version still manage just in case Apple decides to unleash the hardware capabilities. Also if there's a possibility that i can go with 128gigs instead of the 256 that will be great too as i can use the leftover to buy her an apple pen.(I'm thinking external ssds here) Your insights can help me a lot with my decision, again thanks for the amazing content.
@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
Great to have you here. So let’s look at it in the next 2-3 years, which is likely a realistic timeline based on what we’ve seen with iPadOS these days. So the previous iterations of the iPad Pro are still very responsive with what’s already available on the App Store. I believe that even the pro apps will still have a harder time utilizing all the RAM on the 8GB version as there’s still going to be the ability to “kill” any unused resources and “swap “ that RAM for what you need it for. Not to mention that there still will likely be a limitation of the actual apps based on the code or sandbox that it has to run in. I believe these apps will be fantastic and offer a lot of options to utilize the iPad even more, but I think that the 8GB is going to mage these. The ability to work from external drives will also grow with this device. I personally think 256GB should be the starting point for these devices, however I will say that I use the Apple Pencil every time I use the iPad. It really is worth it and it starts to just naturally become part of the workflow. But circling back to the 2-3 years, will she be in a different place professionally and even financially that an upgrade may be more possible at that time anyway? Just my thoughts.
@harnijan44523 жыл бұрын
@@KevinRossRN Thankyou soo much for responding, that too this quickly. I'll try to briefly(EDIT:: IT'S NOT BRIEF!!!,I APOLOGISE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE, AS LONG AS YOU ARE WILLING TO HELP I'M GOOD, IF YOU ARE BUSY YOU DON'T NEED TO REPLY SOON) trace back my steps to this decision so that it can be easier for you to help me if you sensed a lack of clarity in my previous attempt. So my gf currently is an expert at traditional art, but she hasn't yet exposed herself to the digital medium, so my search tbh started with a wacom cintiq but then i quickly realised that it's not worth the investment given its just a display for illustrations (thus it needs a seperate pc and whatnot to function along with tons of attachments and cables running all over the place) thus no portability factor. Then i saw that many artists were using ipad pros for illustrations, and i liked the prospect because of its versatility in terms of the many functions it offers along with having the added advantage of portability and resale value. I started at the 2018 model but then considering everything (age, spec improvement, &!! Resale value) i finally convinced myself that the newest ipad pro will be the best choice. So as you can see i have been increasing my budget by every step, the last of which was the decision to go with the (apple care+) plan upfront cuz i cant even afford to think of fixing it if it ever gets broken(I'm aware of the service charges involved) but i feel like something like this will help me in the long run, as far as even adding a shade of leverage in case i need to sell it. So, having this ipad pro will thus serve to introduce my gf to illustrations , (basics to intermediate level or advanced level (depending on software) of video and photo editing, along with 3d modeling) while being portable. So I'm hoping that with a 1-2 year usage she will be comfortable with all the above to make a decision on what path she will like to choose and thus go for the upgrades at that point according to the use case. Which can be two scenarios, 1) if the device still "just" manages to run any advanced apps she can still keep it(mostly from emotional attachment) if she wants to do the initial steps of any project in this device before shifting to the main device. 2) or what I'm planning which will be to sell the current one and upgrade to the bigger ram models only if apple decides to make drastic changes to the software that at that point this will be the "laptop" replacement" for "real". Or 3) I'll keep this device if it runs those apps smoothly to the point that(any model of ipad released then) will still need you to move things to the bigger device to put the professional touches(my decision at that point will be based on my financial situation) Can you if possible touch upon what value compared to the current price i can retain if i need to sell it, given the (apple care+) which where I'm from atleast will definitely add at the bare minimum an element of trust to the potential buyer. A lot depends on this resale value i get when it comes to the upgrade later. So as you can see i need all the flexibility this purchase can offer.(thus any small difference even between 128& 256 could help cuz if the 8gb ram doesn't have enough capacity to run advanced apps later the extra space doesn't justify anything) but i accept your point that in general the 256 will be the better one to have. Thus my confusion with the 16gb variant cuz if the 8gb has no purpose at that point, there won't be much value ( bcoz all the devices starting from 2018 6gb variant to my current one will be limited to the same capabilities) but the 16gb one will thrive. I really don't want to be in that spot , basically it's a question of spending more now or losing a "lot" more later. (And as you may understand from everything, for me it's right now a question of going less broke or more broke for the upgrade) All this confusion is cuz of this double the ram difference within the same model. But if the 8gb can do the job it will make my life easier in terms of both the resale value as well as having a model now that is fairly capable given the (completely unknown) current & future stages of development at Apple for the iOS. I'm sorry if i have made my reply very long, but thankyou soo much for taking the time out from your life to respond, it means a lot to me. Tc

So I would say that my strengths are with the technical side and business side of things while Brad Colbow is definitely an expert in the artist space, although he too is quite busy and may not be able to answer your questions on that front, but he's got quite a resource on the iPad as an illustrator. I personally get Apple Care for all my devices and although I take care of them, I'm also not easy on them either. As far as resale value, it helps, but I wouldn't make that the defining reason, but rather an extra benefit. I also don't think most would care about 8GB vs 16GB on the resale, but I do believe they'd pay more attention to the storage. Your resale value on the 256 would likely be a better return. But let's distill down what you said about introducing her to this type of workflow. First, you are correct in many artists are utilizing this ecosystem more and more...Check out Brad's channel. However, being that this is an introduction for her to experiment and establish a workflow, this would really be up to her and something to consider. What I mean by that is if you're all in on a higher tiered iPad Pro with 1TB of storage and 16GBs of RAM (since 16GBs starts with the 1TB), you still don't know what this device will do for her. I am a firm believer with upfront investments such as adding more space or RAM, but that's if you know or can even anticipate early on what you're going to need. However, I also see nothing wrong with base model options for many individuals to allow them the opportunity to see what this will add and even if it's a good choice. If an upgrade is needed down the road then it's a matter of looking at it from a scenario of a $1,100USD investment getting you $800-900USD for resale, or a $1,800-$2,000USD investment getting you $1,200-1,300USD on resale. I will say that Macs in general hold more value, but with M1 right now, they're at such a bargain when you look at what these things can do, the resale isn't necessarily the same it used to be. I can understand that you want to spend your money wisely, and not have wished that you'd upgraded or spent more, but the biggest piece of research would be what apps are available to her, how can she really use this, and with what is already available, the chipset is the workhorse. And, Apple has already confirmed that these iPads are going to stay tablets and not fully replace a desktop/laptop any time soon, so we're still working with mobile versions of these apps that still have to function on the other iPads for at least the foreseeable future until Apple releases more M1, M1X, M2 chips in these things.

@@KevinRossRN Thankyou for the help, I'll definitely go with your suggestions as well as check the KZbin channel you asked me to check out, (Brad's ), All i know right now in terms of apps is procreate ( for illustration) i have read that, it gives more layers for more ram. And the rest of info is from you on video editing with ( luma fusion for ex.8gigs vs 16) All i know in terms of my Gf's plan is that she might be looking forward to making a KZbin channel that teaches portrait and landscape paintings(traditional) and in an extreme case (some vlogs based on her life as an artist) so if the 8gb ram can handle that, then she'll be more than happy. Hi Kevin, thanks for your insightful video. I've been searching online for information on whether the M1 can smoothly handle 4K 10-bit H.265, but I couldn't find a clear answer. My current 5-year-old laptop struggles with 4K 8-bit, requiring proxies. Considering an upgrade, I'm inclined towards the iPad Pro M1 for its portability and cost-effectiveness compared to the M2-almost a $1000 difference for a 1TB 16GB RAM. I recently switched from a7III to a6700 for portability, mainly for taking family videos, s cinetone and very light color correction/ grading. No speed ramping or crazy stuff. So it's almost 3 years since it first came out, do you think the iPad Pro M1 can still handle 4K 10-bit 422 XACV HS or S? If I'd go for M2 I can only buy 11" 256gb 8gb ram. Any help is appreciated.

I need to test this with the latest update, but will say that there was an update (after this video) that should have allowed for more allocation of RAM, but I’d say not the full utilization, so you’d be looking at max 12GBs, which allows for that left over to at least manage the OS and “kill” apps if and when needed.

@KevinRossRN Жыл бұрын
Well I’d say that if you’re really not slowing down to the point that it’s costing you a lot of time, I’d wait. Now as far as a lot of time, my example is that I would have to wait anywhere from 20 minutes or longer prior to transitioning from the x86 architecture to silicon. Sometimes these renders would be 30 minutes, but I also had some trouble with scrubbing through the timeline. I went from 20-30 minutes down to 2-3 minutes (or even less) with the M1. I’m still rocking a M1 Max and have no need to upgrade to M2 Pro or Max, although I have the M2 MBA, but it’s not used for creative work. I’m personally holding out until they bring this down to a 3nm chipset. Better battery life and (hopefully) better thermals). The next iteration of iPad will likely happen in 2024. If you’re finding that your time is really taking a hit, then the M1 would be great. I’d just hate for you to spend the money if the time savings isn’t there, or if you’re not that interested in using an external display with that extended display functionality.

Is it 16 ram worth ? Can luma use this 16 ram or it will be blocked? And can this app handle two layer video editing in 4k long videos?
@KevinRossRN2 ай бұрын
So after I posted this video it wasn’t long after that Apple provided some updates to the system where the apps could start taking advantage of more memory. So, the extra memory could help with this situation, but still not necessary, especially if it’s not within your budget. Luma can work with multiple layers of 4K files. I’ve tested this many times. You’re really just limited by the storage space. So, if you’re editing on the iPad there would be limits to the files based on how much storage you’ve invested in. If you’re editing from an external it would be the same, but if you have more storage on the external then you really can work with a fairly large timeline.

@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
I think you’re going to be just fine with that 8GB. There’s a lot of pressure and assumptions around iPadOS 15, but it seems as if it would take a pretty radical overhaul to fully utilize this chip. Guess we will find out.

I’m confused I thought this new iPad formatted to full screen when plugged into a monitor. That look like it had the black bars on the side??
@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
Apparently that’s reserved for the $5,000 Pro XDR display 😁 But actually, no. That’s the issue I hope is fixed in iPadOS 15. We have a very capable chip along with thunderbolt to drive an external display and to be able to have control over the display settings. Let’s hope. 🤞

Hey Kevin. Really thankful for this test. Its helping to understand better for video editing on Ipad Pro I have one question , i hope you can address it. @@KevinRossRN Yes Kevin for more advanced work in Premier Pro. Is there any limitation you faced where you wanted to move to PC or Laptop. I am asking you are more experienced with this app.
@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
So I did actually do a video on this. Unfortunately with Premiere it’s not possible at this time. In Final Cut Pro it is possible to take the timeline and export it. LumaFusion hasn’t said whether they’re working on this feature with Premiere, but I believe one of their limitations is how PP handles the timeline, and really the file structure. However I know that doesn’t help you now my friend.

I've been watching dozens of videos about LumaFusion and Ipad Pro workflows. I cannot make up my mind. I'm still waiting to get a 3080 graphics card laptop and I want to try this in the meantime. Do you recommend it?
@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
So are you building your rig mostly for editing or gaming and editing? LumaFusion has some updates coming, but as it is right now it’s pretty awesome. Just depends on if you want a full editing suite.
@guidoserrano26293 жыл бұрын
@@KevinRossRN thanks for the quick reply. I usually edit on windows (DaVinci and Lightroom). But very often I end up using my phone for quick photo edits (iphone/Polarr app). So I became very curious to see if I could do the same with videos from my A7S3. The iPhone can only handle 8 bit videos to be uploaded directly to social media. Im not planning on migrating to IOS for my daily laptop. But I’m very curious about the iPad and how it could fit this idea.
@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
I’ve edited A7siii footage on the iPad Air, so the M1 can definitely handle it. LumaFusion is really capable and very optimized for iPadOS. If you need something on the go or really just a placeholder, these devices can handle quite a bit. I suppose it’s a matter if you see yourself using it for other workflows.
@guidoserrano26293 жыл бұрын
@@KevinRossRN that’s amazing! Thank you once again for the responses. I think I’ll give it a try. I have the option to return it if it doesn’t fit my way of working. I’ve been using a surface pro for years (different models) and I could never use it as a tablet. Very clunky.

@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the 1TB can be helpful for video editing. With LumaFusion releasing a version where you’d be able to edit on an external drive, then that could open up options for those that get the base model. Hard to say when we’re going to get the option to really utilize this RAM. 🤷♂️

I’m honestly curious: Why would you want to edit on an iPad, especially now with M1 MacBooks? An M1 MacBook Air has the same power and efficiency as the iPad Pro, but offers a superior form factor and more flexible OS.

@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
It’s going to be interesting once these developers start taking advantage of this. I’ll be testing for sure.
@Jeremyspoptart2 жыл бұрын
I think developers will target the 8gb as most consumers will have this configuration. That being said video editing app developers will most like target 12gb which is the max available to developers. If anything iPadOS might become more ram heavy. I loved the video. I haven’t purchased a new iPad Pro yet. The new ones are around the corner and I’m hoping the price of the last gen will drop significantly. Maybe a 12.9 1 Tb for $1100.
@KevinRossRN2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, those prices will certainly drop and I think the M1 is still going to be plenty powerful.
@TheDude17643 жыл бұрын
Nice analysis. Did you read the article yet that discussed the pathway on the M1 that can bypass sandboxing between malicious apps? It’s ‘technically’ a vulnerability they say, but unlikely to be actually exploited. All this weirdness with the retimers on the ports, the unused memory in iOS, and now this ‘hidden pathway’ is making me wonder what they have up their sleeve for Dub-Dub…🤔
@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
I will definitely be looking into that. I haven’t read it, but I will certainly add this to the list. I appreciate you bringing it to my attention. This will also all be interesting when we see the next chips and start testing to those. They’re supposed to not have the Retimer, so I’m curious to see if we can dig in further on that communication protocol. Never thought I would be this interested in a “problem.”
