iPad still has a password. Risk would be someone connecting a monitor to mini.
@njthebaud
@njthebaud 3 жыл бұрын
If it's not too much trouble could you try something for me? Disable automatic login, then power on the mini without a monitor connected. Theoretically the login screen should be there within 30 seconds of powering on even though you can't see it. After waiting about 30 seconds just type in your password using the connected keyboard to your mini and press enter to log in. I just want to see if Luna can still connect this way in headless mode. If it works you can then try to see if having file vault turned on is also possible. Anyways, let me know if you can ;)

@@njthebaud I did attempt it without automatic login and I never saw the sign in screen. I even tried to just type my password blindly and it didn't work either. I wonder if there was an update preventing this because I saw another Luna Display video showing the password screen showing up

This was excellent. You covered my questions much more in depth than any other video I could find. Currently I use the Screens app which works pretty well but not perfect. I’d like to find a better solution but Luna Display seems pretty hit or miss. Some videos show it working perfectly but yours made it seem less reliable. Good to know about the magic keyboard trackpad since I use that heavily with my iPad.

I like how they note that LunaDisplay and their other product, Astropad, can be used together so an iPad can be used as a drawing tablet. That appeals to me, except I already have a drawing tablet. I guess I’ll see what my needs are once I get my Mac Mini and other peripherals.

Thanks Nerissa! This is a really great and useful video! And I'll be viewing your other videos related to the M1 iPad Pro too. And am watching the "M1 Mac Mini + iPad Pro - This is the way" video now too. I just bought a 2TB 12.9" M1 iPad Pro with WiFi & Cellular yesterday on Woot for $1119 plus tax = $1221. Hard to beat that. My first iPad. :) And I have a 2TB M1 Mac Mini too which I love. Was looking for a way to use the iPad Pro as an external monitor and looking at the Luna Display option. But some reviews complained about latency issues. But you've shown here where that may be arrising from. Directed another KZbin creator who just bought the Luna Display for his M2 Mac Mini to your video here. Thanks so much!

So, in a way the hardware dongle “fakes out” a “monitor” being connected to the mini. I’m guessing mini won’t function without a physical “monitor” detected? There appears to be more to the dongle if apps and settings are required on the mini and iPad for the system to function… I was hoping Sidecar on its own would be sophisticated enough, the mini wouldn’t need a physical-always present “monitor” connection, therefore no extra hardware (dongle or real monitor) needed. I can see myself using the resources of the M1 mini via an (appropriately featured) iPad from anywhere with the mini securely tucked away from view. Thank you for this content. I enjoyed learning more about my potential ideal set-up!

I disabled the menu bars. I see Luna is full display and this may be a benefit of Luna. However, for $20 and being able to use my IPad Magic keyboard and trackpad (without have to buy separate units) I’ll take the bars. Let me know if you figured it out.

thanks very much for the video (#1?) on the Luna . when u say u noticed “minimal to non-existent latency when hardwired the Mac Mini, to the iPad”.... what do you mean exactly ? 1. You still need the 2 devices to being connected on the same WiFi, even when hardwired ??(!) (i thought that..once hardwired, one wouldn’t need to rely on the wi-fi connection) 2. do u still notice it not being seamless ? A slight lag, or inconsistencies ? Or both ? The Luna performance will definitely play a major factor on my upcoming setup....which i am planning to be this exactly [MacMini M1X/M2 & iPad Pro 12.9”] i’ll be thankful for any solid feedback ;) PS: your voice is incredibly soothing..hehehe i reckon that if u tried to expand to any sort of audio/radio broadcast/podcast you’d be pretty ‘hireable’. ;) cheers from Portugal

Hi, thanks for watching! So you can technically connect either on the same WiFi or wired connection. I've tried both and noticed that on WiFi, the KZbin videos I was watching was stuttering (my WiFi router is 2 feet away), especially when I was multitasking. When I hardwired the Mac mini to the iPad, the video was MUCH SMOOTHER. However, I was also watching the videos and multi-tasking with some video editing and noticed a small stutter when I was pushing my Mac mini. However, it didn't affect my work at all as it was very minor. This minor stutter, when wired in, is such a rare occurrence when heavily multitasking, but doesn't occur when I'm only doing one or two things at a time. Hopefully, I made sense ☺️

In order to have 3 monitors total? I would say it would be dependent on how you will be connecting your monitors, since one of the Mac mini USB-Cs will be taken up by the Luna Display adapter. Though I haven't tried it with Luna Display, theoretically, if you connect one monitor with HDMI & the other via USB-C (to HDMI if applicable), Luna Display shouldn't have a problem as it is technically running through the app.

So WiFi strength plays a part when connected with a wire too?

Not when wired. The only minor stuttering I notes when wired was when the tasks were more on the intensive side

After watching your your video I purchased a Luna Display. Initially it worked. I left it in the USB C and did not connect to a iPad for a while. I bought a new USB C monitor, and so I use one port of my Mac mini M1 for the Luna Display and the other for the Dell usb monitor. Now I can't get it to work at all. The Luna Display tries to configure on powering up and just tells me that it cannot find a display, unplug the dongle and try again. I have pinged the iPad and vice versa to proof that it is on the same Network but I can't get it to work, Even hardwired the iPad to the Mac. Really frustrating. I had written to the manufacturer and they auto replied that they are small team and will take a little time to get back to me. Well it has been almost 24 hours. If I had known it was this flaky I would I would not have bought it. I asked the manufacturers if I could have my money back. Well those who have not purchased it do consider my predicament and really consider well before making the purchase, they are a small team and will take some time to respond. The FAQs are not much of a help.

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear this...I truly wonder if something is hindering it from connecting since your other USB-C hub has been utilized for the monitor. However, I thought each USB-C was independent of each other, so it shouldn't have interfered.

Hurray, Astopad Support had replied and explained that there is a conflict of two monitors on my setup as I am also using a USB C Dell 4K monitor and the Mac. Mini Mac M1 can only output to one display with the same industrial display protocol standards used. Well this is another consideration before you buy this fine product.Hopefully we will see an alternative product that is ablate to use it's unique transport/protocol. Regretfully as we get faster computers we are getting more gadget interfacing restrictions. I miss the old days of the Apple II.

Mac already has airplay function. The only problem is how to do it automatically when boot in. You can write simple code to make it happen.

I don’t use Davinci Resolve however, I saw that it’s still in Beta version. I don’t think Luna Display will negatively impact its use-case.

I might have figured something out. This whole disable password log in problem was very off putting.. I was looking to run my Mac Mini with the iPad Pro and a Bluetooth keyboard, just as you are, except with the Mini across the room. I had thought I could circumvent the password problem by connecting my BT keyboard wirelessly to the Mini, at power up, log in (blindly) and then transfer the BT connection to my IPad Pro and everything would be good to go. Wrong Because if the keyboard is connected to the Mini and I swap it to the IPad. It wont connect itself to the Mini just because I powered it on. Maybe if I disconnected the keyboard from the IPad before I powered up the Mac Mini? But that’s an afterthought.. now. Either way it would be a bunch of unnecessarily jockeying of Bluetooth connections, given the solution that I came up with. That being the - Rii mini X1 It’s a tiny AF keyboard with a trackpad that connects to the Mini Mac via USB With this simple and affordable option, I simply.. power the Mini Mac up! Wait 10 seconds.. type in my password, launch Luna from my IPad. With Luna set to launch on the Mac Mini, it automatically connects. The Mac Mini goes to sleep mode.. touch the Rii mini X1 keyboard and its back in 10 seconds or less. Your Mac Mini remains password protected! and MAYBE you don’t have to disable encryption either? (Maybe you could try and make a video update?) But, someone else needs to try that part out. I’m not very tech savy for a guy banging out a log in fix for Luna that nobody else seems to have discovered or at least bothered sharing. This is a 20 dollar fix that requires only giving up one of your USB ports to keep your Mac Mini password secure. I am thrilled to have this solution!

In my opinion, the headless mode is not worth the security risks. I like how you used it with your iPad magic keyboard setup. I like the idea of using my Mac Mini remotely with my iPad on my couch away from my basement office. I think only certain users will benefit from Luna Display over SideCar. I'm using both SideCar and Duet Display. The reason why I use Duet Display sometimes over SideCar is, Duet display allows me to use the iPad in the portrait orientation, which is great for things like work chat (ie. Slack). SideCar is landscape only. Can you use Luna Display in the portrait orientation? Great video as always!

Agreed. That’s definitely a big consideration when choosing this method. I attempted Duet Display last week and I was still having issues 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’ll give portrait mode a try

@@rnerissa3843 I just installed it today on my M1 Mini and it worked. I don't know if you have an older version or not. It is a bit laggy. I don't think it is M1 native. I don't think they have too much motivation to make it native with Sidecar being available. They are probably concentrating on other platforms.
