My son has the newest Macbook Air so I had a good basis of comparison. I'm running LumaFusion on the Air and it works like a charm. I keep all of my media off-device, hence only 64GB of storage. I was able to score the low-price Magic Keyboard from Walmart, so all in my investment is approx $750. No issues so far. Great video for folks to compare, though! Thanks for posting.

Let me get this clear, All of y’all iPad Air owners might get offended, but the fact is the macbook air or any mac for that matter is miles better than any ipad (including the air) in terms of getting actual work done. Let me support my assertion here with couple of reasons. First off, you can download any app from any source , whereas the iPad of course cant. I agree that many apps are there in the app store but the ability to download any app from the internet is just insanely useful. Next off many applications are very limited on the app store. For instance take microsoft team, an essential for many people. It has full functionality on the mac whereas on iPad it is very limited in terms of uploading files etc. And finally many occupations (in terms of IT) require apps for coding and programming, such as Terminal and Xcode, which isnt available on the iPad. Also the ipad requires so many adiitional accessories to use it to its full potential such as the magic keyboard, but you can use the macbook as it is. Also i do agree that the iPad is better for media consumption and for other people like artists etc but when it comes to anything else the mac is better. I am open to any contradictions and also btw all this is coming from an iPad Pro and Macbook Air user, so I have had experiences with both of these devices.
@rzorrilla524 жыл бұрын
I bought and returned iPad Air 4 256GB because of the issues with the Files App (touted by many KZbin influencers as a ‘big new thing that makes an iPad a laptop replacement’ no, it does not) when in fact - for my use cases - the Files App is unreliable, slow when exporting to external media like USB C SSD and PRIMITIVE (seems like working via a ‘backdrop implementation’) as compared to even DOS. For my use everyday productivity (Word, Excel) the iPads equivalent apps are basically crippled versions of those apps. So... most likely will get Mac Air with M1 since I just battery service on my iPad Air 2 that still works well as a media consumption device. In reality, I still need (or want ?) both devices, MacBook for productivity, and iPad for media consumption. P. S. As far as the Apple Pencil - I really wanted that - but I realized that I’ll never make me an artist and for what I do most of the time when taking quick notes, that pen and paper still work just fine.

I have switched to iPad and magic keyboard for everything. While some things take some work around a to do, once you know and are used to them, the experience is just better than anything else. It could be more streamlined but this handles video editing better than any actual computer I’ve used.

MBA has a headphone socket also it only costs $999, remember to add the magic keyboard to the iPad Air is an extra $300 that makes it way more expensive and the pencil is ANOTHER $100! Plus remember you can’t use a iPad as a laptop replacement, nearly but not completely, I know, I tried with a iPad Pro but had to keep my 2017 MBA to do tasks just not possible with a iPad! One final thing, the MBA can run both Mac & iPad apps! To me the choice is simple, MBA all day long

I just picked the Air for my simple but I bet also common use case - my kid can do online learning with it, draw doodles with a good pen, watch KZbin, and I can do my occasional typing with a Bluetooth keyboard. I’ve had both for several years. I use my tablet a lot for misc stuff-watching YT vids, email, texting, puzzles. But if I want to do any serious work, I go to the computer. I find it easier to deal with creating, finding or moving files. Plus, I do a lot of genealogy, and the app versions are just limiting. I have a monitor hooked up to the laptop, and it feels like a full desktop, that I can evacuate with. (Used to live in hurricane alley). I’d recommend trying the programs you need on your tablet and see how comfortable they feel. If it’s cumbersome, it will be a long four years... best of luck in your studies! 😊

That depends on what you’re using it for, if your main tasks are note-taking, making presentations and writing esssays the ipad with the magic keyboard is more than enough. Although it takes some time to get used to the smaller keyboard (took me around 15-30 minutes of typing). But if your workflow is made up of more intensive tasks that the ipad cannot do, then go for the laptop. I own both an ipad air with the magic keyboard and a macbook and i use the ipad 90% of the time.

The big issue it seems is how expensive the magic keyboard is. Realistically you’d want the 256GB iPad Air but with the keyboard added, it is more than the base M1 MBA. Ultimately it depends on what you need more, traditional computer desktop experience or the flexibility of a tablet/touchscreen interface. Ideally the magic keyboard would be closer to $150-200, and then the pairing would be very appealing

Which do you find more productive? *I would go for the Macbook, but I do really want to use an Apple Pencil to take note on the Ipad as I'm currently a college freshman, and as some don't really mind, I would greatly benefit with the main camera. Thus, is it worth it that I choose an Ipad Pro/Air 4 over the Macbook just because of these? As far as I know the iPad, any iPad, cannot run a full Python implementation. Specifically it cannot implement PyAudio, which means you cannot do variable length recordings for Speech Recognition. I assume the M1 has the libraries necessary to do that. Otherwise it would be necessary to take it back to the Apple store and fling it through the window. It's not about "traditional," it's about whether you have a genuine multipurpose computing machine.

I am thinking about replacing my 2020 i3 MacBook Air with this setup. The iPad Air, Apple Pencil and magic keyboard. I’m a writer and a photographer and work mostly from home, and most of what I do is type and edit photos. I am also a part time student. I also consume a lot of content for research, and fun. I need something light and portable that I can take from my bed to my couch, occasionally sit on my desk, and to study and read on. Could this actually replace my MacBook Air?
@sidehustle_university1013 жыл бұрын
The iPad is inferior in every way to the Air, aside from portability/form factor. I’ve tried and failed to replace my macbook pro with an iPad pro last year. Everything is more difficult. Forget file management, uploading files and photos. Everything needs a workaround or dongle and takes forever. 0/10 would not recommend. I’ve just sold my iPad and bought an M1 Air. Will never again try to use an iPad for productivity.

if you're a writer, go for a macbook bec otherwise you would need the magic keyboard folio for the ipad which in my opinion ,i would prefer a laptop instead if i just want to write .

Been thinking for a while about video editing on the iPad. The reason is portability, powerful, fanless, and affordable. Glad M1 Mac comes at the right time. For 1000 bucks it is better in a lot of ways, except for the touchscreen.

Here's my use case: I draw on my iPad and have no need or desire to do that on my laptop (MacBook Pro M1). I do want to use my Mac to run traditional and essential software, I am absolutely not interested in running iPad/iPhone apps on my computer. I'm covered with those other devices. I've used touch laptops; one tap on the screen and the thing falls off your lap; no touch for me please. I don't take photos with my iPad or my laptop, I don't know anyone who does or wishes they could. I do a lot of drawing on my iPad, I do not want to draw on my laptop. So the choice me me is simple - one for "real" work and more challenging play and one for design and play. Easy. :-)

What are you thoughts on if it will run this fast when hooked up to an external SSD. I know external SSD's are fast and usually not and issue currently, but considering how fast the new apple internal ssd's are do you think we will start seeing some slowdown in footage that we are currently not seeing in tests?

My iPad Air 2 that I have now does everything I need it to do. Also love Logitech Canvas case. Long time ago use to take my Intel Windows based laptop to Starbucks. Then came the larger screen Apple iPhones, a change in jobs, and no longer had need for a laptop. So feel that once my iPad Air 2 is no longer supported will replace it with a new iPad. I am looking the see what Apple comes up that I might want to purchase to replace my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) which is doing everything I need after I replaced the fusion drive / chip with a Samsung SSD 860 QVO 2TB hard drive.

I've been having the same debate with myself. I've decided to go with the iPad. It came down to what is most important for me: portability and flexibility. There are no MacOS apps I can't live without and all of my work productivity can be done on the iPad. The pen will be a big bonus since I markup documents a lot for work and doing that with a mouse is a pain. Finally, I really like the idea of popping the iPad out of the keyboard and sitting on my couch surfing the web and reading eBooks.
