If you’re the type of power user that would actually see degradation in SSD performance due to memory cell damage then you’re also the type of user who will have probably bought a new computer WAY before you would actually see such damage. If you’re a power user and you only upgrade every 10-15 years then you’re probably not really a power user. Modern SSDs can handle hundreds of terabytes of write cycles.
@gregorynaas-lattanzio82884 жыл бұрын
However, if you're the kind of user who, like me, does upgrade every ten years, then putting $180 USD down now to double your memory can make a lot of sense to future proof the hardware for your needs and for changes in the ecosystem. I don't consider myself a power user, but that's debatable since I edit video and create music (though much of my day-to-day is in Microsoft office and Adobe suite). In any case, I'll use this thing to its death, so, if you're a similar user (not quite a "power user"), it does make some sense to just buy the memory since you can't upgrade it later.

Samsung offers a 5 year warranty or 200tb on the 960-series. (Older chart so M1 will use a newer SSD, but used Samsung chart for ref) Samsung 256GB, 200TB endurance guarantee from Samsung(maybe more just what the will warranty) At 200tb divided by 5gb per day = 40000 divided by 365 days = 109 years Think the ssd will be fine, don’t quote me fully on the math but wanted to add some details for people.

Actually my view is the opposite of this video. I consider myself a power user but purchased the 8gb 256gb air model. The reason I figured 8gb would be fine is because of the super fast nvme ssd + SWAP. Such a fast ssd is great for swap usage and ram expansion,and as I don't render 4k video or any video, most ram data can be swapped back and fourth quickly (and apple over charges for larger ram and ssd). Ultimately I'm gonna be using RDP and nfs/samba and a Linux VM on my proxmox desktop for any x86 Dev workflows/docker. This MacBook air is a fanless arm laptop with supported software. iOS apps. Xcode. Android studio with arm native VM (when ready) and a bunch of other stuff. I can already buy additional external storage cheaper that can be plugged in via thunderbolt or nfs. It's actually SWAP+ the fast ssd that enables the 8gb model to be almost as performant as the 16gb model. And I agree with all the other users. I will replace the laptop wayyyy before the ssd eventually dies, and most likely sell it for not too much less than I bought the machine for in the first place. Imo the 8gb 256gb fanless MacBook air m1 is a great entry point into the apple ecosystem

The best option is to always use an external drive to store music, videos and photos as external drives can be replaced whereas the built in drive in the Macbooks cannot unless sent to Apple and replaced by them at serious cost. That's one advantage of Windows laptops you can upgrade the built in hard drives anytime you want. If you wanted to you could have a Samsung QVO 8TB SSD in a Windows laptop and an external back up drive so you get years and years more usage than you would with a Macbook. But overall i'd say if people are dead set on getting a Macbook of any sort whether it be an Air or Pro i'd say store virtually nothing on the internal drive and get yourself as large an external SSD drive as you can and use a 2.5" USB-C drive case to put it in, and then use a USB-C to Thunderbolt or whatever connector cable it is on the laptop.
@djteknovibe932 жыл бұрын
@Bohdan M So what if there aren't a lot there are some amazing Windows laptops and the more costly ones have spaces for two internal SSD drives and already have 32GB and some have 64GB Ram and excellent graphics cards.

To all those who are planning on posting videos of any kind really, pay close attention to this particular video. I say so because it checks all of the boxes and then some. It is full of relevant information, answers all of the questions it’s title set out to do, it is very well filmed, and most importantly, it is concise in a short amount of time. Almost all of the other videos on this topic were far too long and detailed with lengthy commentary that was completely unnecessary. The average KZbinr will check out when this happens and won’t like or subscribe to your posting. This is by far the most important aspect when creating a video. So!… Use this as a template. MacOS is designed to use as much ram as it can. Don't be surprised it uses the ram, because it's there. If you had 8gb, I guarantee it would be just fine also. And if you had 32gb of ram, your system would use like 18. It's just how ram is used on MacOS.

As far as my limited understanding goes, the OS keeps some critical code/assets in there, just in case you run out of RAM, instead of having to create one on the go. Sort of a "insurance". I doubt that most of it is used dynamically
@Neffins4 жыл бұрын
I'm sure it'll always do that regardless of how much RAM you have, EVEN if they offered a 32GB one(unless they specified that in some code), the amount that it preserves probably isn't even utlilized to the max, it's just a failsafe most likely, but it's still a better idea to aim for the 16GB because you have less of a chance of having to use more swap.
