How does the new M1 chip from Apple compare to the M1 Max and Pro chips? I set out to test the M1 chip on my 13" Macbook Pro against an M1 Max chip on my 14" Macbook Pro. For the tests, I compared the use of popular data science applications such as: Python, R, Excel, Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, Parallels (Virtual Machines), Docker (Containers), SQL, and the Terminal (Command Line).

Hi, I have a M1 Max Pro and used Parallels. Starting out in Data Analytics almost all the courses asked me to install either SQL Server or MYSQL before Power Bi but both are unsupported on Parallels with the M1 chip. So that was pretty much dead in the water. I reached out to Parallels and they said it’s a Microsoft issue.

Thanks to your breakdown, I went ahead and started the Google Analytics Certification Program three weeks ago. I am now on the 8th module, the "capstone." Since I am brand spanking new to this field and looking to switch careers at 51yo😖 I really don't feel that for someone like myself, the cert is going to be enough to land a real job. I am considering forgoing the capstone, for a bootcamp from a university in a neighboring county from where I live. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I think the capstone is the most valuable part as it gets you into start building projects for your portfolio. Projects are what is going to show employers you have experience. Bootcamps and certificates are great for learning, but thye don't show employers that you can apply the skills. My recommendation is do the capstone and start building up your portfolio.

I would recommend the Mac... but then again I'm a Mac fan boy... ha. On a serious note, I think it's possible to use the Mac. Additionally since a lot of ML learning is not being done on the cloud I don't think you'd have a software compatibility issue. Is it possible to reach out to some one at the school to determine if you'll have any issues... I have heard from others in the comments that have used a Mac with no issues for CS degrees, so I think you should be good.

Great video analysis; thanks! But I would add a couple of points. As for M1 machines: the extra money for the 13" Pro over the Air can be justified by: extra screen brightness and extra battery life. Just something to think about. As for the 14" machine: same things: bigger battery and FABULOUS (and meaningfully larger) screen. If you work on battery and your eyes can get tired, then the screen and battery capacity can matter a lot. I also expect support for Metal and the M1 GPUs in general will increase dramatically. There will likely be a dramatic gain in the relative performance of the big GPUs in the Pro and Mac chips. I expect also better support for VMs in general. At that point, while16GB of memory feels good now, remember at one time not long ago, so did 1GB. Just a couple thoughts.

If you're having doubts and are unsure if Mac will support the applications you need for your master's programs, then I'd just go with a Windows machine. You won't have to worry about about compatibility issues with Windows as most analytical apps are made for Windows so its a safer route.

I’m headed into a double major in Engineering and Business management and since I will be spending a lot of time behind the screen I want something with as little resistance as possible. I found your video review by chance and my immediate reaction, as someone who frequently needs to do substantial data processing using Excel (and is beyond frustrated with Windows laptop performance), was "at last !". Trouble is, the Excel section of your review was (paraphrasing) 'pretty good, but use a Windows machine is you need some specific functionality'. This tells me almost nothing about the capabilities and relative performance of an M1 Max/Pro, either versus Windows machines, or versus the standard M1 chips. With Excel having such a huge user base I thought you'd cover the performance of this software in far more detail.

Hello Luke! I don't know if you'll read my comment but I hope you can eventually do a review with with the M2 Mac. Please! 🙏🤞 I'm a content creator (which of course includes video editing, recording my screen and illustration) but also I'm currently learning data analyst skills such as Excel and Python. I've been checking out some of the M2 Mac settings for when I have enough money saved to upgrade my laptop (I'm using a MacBook Pro from Mid 2012, still going strong, it has only failed me once hence why I'm looking for another Mac rather than a PC. I've used 2 Dell PCs and eventually they stopped working properly after a 4 or 5 years of use). What worries me a bit is that I might not be able to find a lot of IOS apps to continue learning about data analysis such as SQL, Macros or Power BI. I'm sorry if my comment seems silly, I'm still a noob when it comes to data analysis 😅. Thank you for uploading your videos, they have been very useful for me to learn new things and maybe eventually have a career change in the future (unfortunately in my country being a digital illustrator sometimes doesn't pay the bills). PS: Does the Parallels license last for only a year like a subscription or it's a lifetime payment?

@@LukeBarousse My master plan was to get rid of my home based 2009 27” iMac and upgrade my business based 2018 MacBook Pro to the 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Max. My home computer is a 2009 27” IMac that is REALLY SLOW and can’t run current software (QB for taxes is one example).. On the 2018 MacBook Pro I am running Windows 10 under Parallels because certain programs only work on Windows. The new 2021 MacBook Pro 16” M1 Max would combine both my personal and business needs. The other computers in the business are PC compatibles running Windows 10 as well. As the new owner, I can do what I want and will move to a Mac based system. I bought a MacBook Pro 2018 to run windows 10 under Parallels for my needs. At this time Windows 10 is working well on all of the other machines and these machines will be retired as they age. The plan was to use my 2021 MacBook Pro as the last one to use any Windows 10 applications. When I used Time Machine to put the 2018 MacBook Pro contents on the 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Max I found Window 10 would not work only Windows 11. I don’t think it is wise to spend a bunch of time working on Windows 11 since I will get rid of all the other machines running windows 10 in a of year or so.
