The real power of theM113 is its mobility, where everything else gets stuck the M113 excels, In Afghanistan EU country's quickly learned to replace heavy and wheeled APC's with M113. (How quickly we forget heard learned lessons of history.)

I drove these in the 80s I think they needed heaters too. I used to run the engine and remove the access panel for warmth lol that did not work very well. Four years of trying to keep the bloody things running. I dont think i ever got the oil and grease out of my skin. I still cannot hear very well in my right ear due to that noisy engine. I had fun though and am glad I left the army.

I drove a M1068 command vehicle on Korea and Oklahoma. It's fun, it's pretty much a tank. I dunno about floating one in a river, but they say it would float. We used it to send fire missions to M270A1 MLRS launchers through a digital fire control system similar to Google earth.

One of the best not the best . You definitely dont want it going up against a BTR-60 , BRDM- 2 or BMP-2. Depending on the M113's Armament it's a light armored vehicle. A RPG-7 can take it out if it hits the rear or it can disable it if hits the tred . The good thing about the M113 is that it's maximum speed is 45 miles per hour that makes it hard for Soviet Style Main Battle Tanks, like the T72 to track with it's crank turret. We learned that during Operation Desert Storm with the M2 Bradley. The only thing that would make the M113 a vulnerable target would be it sitting still. You also have 8 troops to worry about if they disembark.

@kirbyroxy how enlightened. It's not for roaring into battle, it's for transporting troops. You take them to battle. You stop around the front lines. You charge them based on the time and gas price. You wave and give them your number to call you when they return from their trip. You then go home. It's a taxi, on treads. We have Strykers and Bradleys, but those are combat vehicles. An M113 is just a tracked van or truck (look up M548).

no we don't use the 234 apc's any more, they reached the end of there service life some years ago!strangely there where two versions of this apc, the Petrol version called SAXON(which had a very nasty habit of catching fire and the diesel engined one that the armoured regiments used to good effect(face it tanks run on diesel so why not the apc's? there was also the ABBOT sp gun version fv 237 and the REME version fv 238 recovery and as for the Royal Engingeers viper version...

Not really. It's simple, effective, fast, well armored, and reliable. The engine is a well-proven truck engine. It can keep up with tanks offroad. The armor is much thicker than the nearest rival (the MTLB-U has 1/3 the armor thickness), it swims easily, its fucking simple to drive, and it can be easily modified. They're still sold by the hundreds. No, it may not have a 40mm cannon on it or 400mm of armor, but it's definitely the best in its class.

I fixed and repaired all of my platoons track vehicles that made it off of deadline. Get good at something and dont expect to be promoted. It should be that those who do the most for the platoon get promoted. The ones who slack off are sent to the promotion boards. At least back when 113's were still around. Apparently these are outdated. Yeah so there are 113-A3's. Beyond that I have no clue.

It's a great vehicle because it's NOT just an APC. It's the APC version of the Panzer IV or the Willy's MB--you can mod it heavily, uparm it, uparmor it, etc. Has a tough suspension, a solid engine, excellent mobility on its wide tracks, an adaptable chassis, and a low price. So it's a Swiss army knife on treads. As far as an apc itself, it's mediocre. Far better armor than the BMP and a better chassis, but probably not really that much better than the Marder, Bradley, etc.

errr no the Russian T-34 tank(both the 76 and 84 versions)used a Diesel engine in them(mind you they ripped off the design from the French, who used it to power there airships!) with upgrades this engine went on to be used in most of the rusian tanks(T-44,T-55,T-62 and even the T72) anyway the reason the old M-113 is still beening used is simple..there are thousands of the damm things out there!
