The Bradley did it's job in Iraq. But it's funny seeing arm chair generals spouting about shit they saw in a movie. But never saw combat with them. I was a Bradley mechanic for 15 years and did 3 Iraq tours and was also a recovery guy. I know for a fact I towed in more blown up and damaged vehicles in one tour than 98% of the people in my job back then. The Bradley saved lives and that is a fact.

For most of my time in the army, I was a Bradley dismount (apparently one of the non-existent guys in the back) and a driver for a short while. For the most part, a very comfortable vehicle to ride in (and fun to drive) with a great heating system unless you were the driver or in the turret. Ridiculously hot in the driver's seat and freezing in the turret. I for one was very grateful to have the Bradley as the vehicle I would have gone to war in had it come to that. When I first arrived in Germany, I was assigned to the anti-armor company (Echo) in our battalion which was equipped with the M901 ITV (Improved TOW Vehicle). They were getting ready to transition to the Bradley, so the M901's were being prepared for turn in since the Bradley already had the twin TOW launcher, making the ITV's redundant. When that was complete, we were all dispersed to the line companies.

The Bradley is a light weight tank, highly maneuverable, can move very quickly in and out, gets behind cover quickly, can do peek-a -boo firing multiple 25m rounds at the T-90 slow moving tank, knocking out its laser eyes to shoot back. The Bradley can move very quickly, to get out of the way of the T-90 or T-14 soviet tanks. By the time the T-90 has a firing solution, its to late, the Bradley has already fired multiple rounds into the turret of the T-90, disabling it. I watched the Bradley tank in action against three T-90 soviet tanks. The T-90 Soviet tanks were trying move its turret for a shot at the Bradley, but the Bradley kept going back and fourth causing the T-90 turret to over shoot the Bradley. Then the Bradley opened multiple rounds at the laser eyes of the T-90's, no contest, the T-90's were done before they got started. The Badley tanks are like little HOT RODS, moving all over the ground to deter the big T-90-s guns.

Simultaneously my stepdad worked on the Bradley ifv while I worked on original Teledyne Turbo Diesel for M60A3 and first of 120mm munitions for M60 and M1A1 transition from 105mm. We perfected Turbo Diesel for Israel Merkava that is still in use. Both FMC and Teledyne partnered with Israeli Defense Forces. My almost 4 decades with Teledyne/DoD and my stepdad losing his Life in accident on FMC remote firing range for Bradley Testing made being unseen sacrifice in Winning the Cold War. I'm retired now and he's long dead. USA forgot heroes of the Cold War, but we are everywhere and our family's Sacrifices were quite real. The Gulf War and later "push to Baghdad" had a Million invisible patriots behind our boys and girls in uniform. Cold War wasn't as "Cold" as history books tell it. It was a true Team Effort. I owe great debt to US Taxpayers who supported the effort during Ronald Reagan administration who put the "coup de grace" on the USSR. 30 years ago the effort was quite real. USA may be FAR from perfect but Thank God the USSR folded rather than start WW3. No parades necessary.

I was at Ft Belvoir in EOBC when my wife's roommates husband (ordance branch officer) was doing weapons testing on the first FMC Bradley. I was then off to the Fulda Gap for 20 months in support of a Cav troop. Now 50 years later I can tell you the Cold War is not over. Europe has not funded, equiped, organized, or trained to rebel a Russian invasion. Frankly, I don't think the Russians would invade because much of Europe is a basket case of ineptitude and corruption. All the US paratroopers and Cav units would be "speed bumps" just like we were in my day and there will be no NATO landing to drive them out if "the little green men" crossed the borders.

Brads and armor are cool and all, but I'm so glad I was airbone infantry. I would not want to spend half my life in the motor pool and I liked being on foot in control of my own destiny.

I would say the Bradley does infantry support pretty good; not a battle tank, it's a fighting vehicle. It's just there to give extra capability, kinda like a half track in ww2. Your not gonna take on the tiger tank, but you can sure as hell bust up some fortified infantry positions, or maybe clip some hostile support vehicles. And you can work in some places where a Abrams might not fit.
@jonny29546 жыл бұрын
A IFV does exactly what you said in your comment. The point is, there are many IFVs that do it much better than the Bradley.
@user-ve8ry1xw8v6 жыл бұрын
wildernessshouter actually during gulf war 1 Bradley's were very effective at destroying Iraqi t-72 tanks with there TOW missiles and better detection equipment.
@wildernessshouter6 жыл бұрын
123 456 I know they have that capability; still not a tank though, some people talk shit about the Bradley. I'm just saying it's pretty good for what it is.
@user-ve8ry1xw8v6 жыл бұрын
wildernessshouter yeah. one thing I think they should do is give it heavier armor and a larger auto cannon turning it into something like a light tank.
@wildernessshouter6 жыл бұрын
123 456 I worked with a guy once that was a instructor at the armor school when it was at fort Knox. He said it was a big deal that the Russians covered more ground faster with their BMP then we could in Bosnia. Said it had to do with vehicle weight and the fact that they were able to use pre existing small bridges that we could not. He said that is what birthed the striker vehicle. That weight factor could be at play on the Bradley too.

I was a driver and gunner on this tracked piece of outdated cold war junk. I was in our commanders Bradley when the thing caught fire. I was glad I never had to use one of these in Afghanistan since back then I was in Marine Corps.

"A troop transport that can't carry troops, a reconnaissance vehicle that's too conspicuous to do reconnaissance, and a quasi-tank that has less armor than a snowblower, but has enough ammo to take out half of D.C." From the Pentagon War.

so basically, a M2 Bradley is almost kinda like a descendant of the M4 Sherman but with a smaller gun, modern engineering, high scouting technology, wire guided TOW launchers, has less Armour than a snow blower, and has enough ammo to take out half of Washington DC Awesome

Now fire an RPG at it, while it's fueled up for combat, and stocked with ammo. (Yes, I watched Pentagon Wars.)
@Soulessdeeds5 жыл бұрын
That's cute. But reality is we didn't lose many Bradley's to RPG'S. IEDs were the armor killers and the Bradley still saved allot of guys lives. I did 3 tours in Iraq as Bradley mechanic and it did just as well as the Abrams. Often under much heavier work loads and longer missions. I won't say the Bradley is perfect. But it's allot better than the version that came out during the setting of Pentagon Wars.
