In Europe, prices are a little different, and the difference between MBA with 512 GB and entry level MBP is only ~100€, so you would definitely think twice about going with the air, given that the pro just has many nice features, like the larger and way better screen and the speakers. Only if portability is the main factor, the air is better.

Exactly, if you need 512 GB of disc space and 16 GB of ram anyway then M2 Air is currently almost the same price as base 14 inch M1 PRO model so in that case I think 14 inch M1 Pro is a winner.

Please note that the screen on the M2 MBA and 14” MBP are fundamentally different. The MBA has an IPS panel and a 60Hz refresh rate, while the 14” MBP uses Mini-Led (Liquid Retina XDR, as marketed by Apple), and the refresh rate is 120 Hz. The increased refresh rate makes a day-and-night difference.

While it is lighter, has better battery life and is a little faster for lighter duty tasks, I’d still take my MBP 14 over the Air. The active cooling and increased graphics performance get a W for future proofing, and after you upgrade the RAM and storage on the MBA, you’re within a couple hundred dollars from the MBP, especially since you can get discounts on the base MBP 14.

You aren't taking into account sale prices... right now (Aug 2022) the base 14" is about $150 more and sometimes even less. The screen - oh the screen!, the ports (students and adults doing presentation the HDMI is more useful than most take into consideration), the speakers, better graphics and cooling for actually playing the new games Apple is touting. Battery wise for normal tasks is easily a full day then you have fast charging on the 14". We got the 14" right after WWDC and after all the videos and getting to use an M2 Air for a bit, we are still very pleased we went with the 14".

I already own a 14inch Pro but I think I'm just gonna buy an M2 air at this point. I loved my 2020 M1 Air so much that I gave it to my wife and bought a 14inch Pro. The truth is that, as much as I love my pro and won't be giving it away or selling it, I really miss the portability and battery life of the Air. I'm going to go ahead and buy a midnight M2 Air and if I end up barely touching my 14inch Pro after 3-6 months I may just go ahead and sell it. I do like to play game on my MacBook tho so I could see that being an issue with the M2 Air and it might sway me to use the pro enough but I really enjoyed how light and portable and robust the old 2020 Air felt to me in comparison to the 14inch Pro. The 14inch pro just feels heavier and more delicate. I'm always worried I'm going to drop it or damage it and don' ever feel like taking it anywhere outside my house.

Despite the issue of thermal throttling I lean toward the M2 MacBook Air,. I'm a musician. Fan noise ruin-no matter how slight-can ruin a recording session. And it can hamper an editing session and make it needlessly fatiguing. I'd gladly pay a premium for a MacBook Pro if-depending on circumstances-I could choose thermal throttling (i.e. loss of performance) over fan activity. I'm not anti-fan. I'd gladly let the fan fly while exporting videos or intensive photo editing-no problem there. But I'd opt to keep fans off while running certain audio/MIDI apps, like Logic, particularly when throttling is not detrimental to the workflow or fidelity the current audio tasks. Throttling leaves a musician's work environment free from noise pollution. And I'd prefer a little harmless heat and an innocuous reduction of power. So, am I missing something? Are there MacOS settings or preferences on MacBook Pros to choose throttle over the fans? If not, why not. I'd be a higher paying customer if there are.

There is 3rd party software to turn the fans off or limit them to very low, hopefully silent, speed. Then the MBP will automatically throttle if it runs too hot. But nobody can say if this will damage internals since it’s not built to run without a fan. I wouldn’t put a MBP on full load with this kinda mod, but if you’re just doing some recording? Piece of cake for that machine, so you could do that (in fact it probably wouldn’t even activate the fans even without the mod).

I just bought the M2 Air with 16go and 512go at a discounted price of 1630€ in France. Looking for the best price I could find for the base 14 ´MacBook Pro, it wasn’t under 2000€. So that make almost a 400€ difference in price, enough for not hesitate between the 2. Furthermore, after using it for about 2 weeks now, I am always so surprised how light it is, I have the feeling to hold my iPad Pro instead a computer… Performances wise, I edit videos in DaVinci Resove, 4K 422 10 bit files from Panasonic S5, edit files is a breeze, even with colour correction and some Luts or effects applied. I can play up to 4 4K layers without dropping any frame. The only limitation during my work is when I apply some fusion effects or title, I need to lower the playback resolution, as per the base MacBook Pro 14 I presume. Of course export time are longer, but the most important for me is to be able to work in a creative way, being able to instantly see the result on my timeline. If I need to wait 30 min for my project to render, this is absolutely not a problem, as soon as I know what to expect for the result. Of course for heavy project with a lot of animations, it is not the best choice but it is not intended for that purpose. For my daily work, including writing, web browsing and editing some photos and my KZbin videos which are about 15 mins long, it is far good enough !

I'm a Ph.D. student in Astrophysics and I usually push my laptops to the extreme with machine learning, data analysis, programming, and simulations. I would recommend the M1 Pro if the workload is heavy otherwise go for the base model of MBA M2. The MBA M2 is fine for ordinary people and sufficiently enough for writing, streaming or watching videos, etc.

@@GunzyHD I can’t stand these comparisons. And honestly, not only does apple confuse consumers with performance overlap, KZbinrs also try and show they can do similar things. At the end of the day, know your software, know how you multitask. I’m a professional who uses graphic programs that are demanding. I open up a ton of tabs, I leave files open, I forget to close things out! Unless you are very structured with your laptop usage, don’t do demanding things, are good with only having one or two or maybe 3 things open, then Air makes sense. But to try and put performance and all that against entry level devices vs pro machines is just silly. And from Apples perspective, they need to actually make PRO models…not an M2 pro that’s kinda a pro, but kinda old as crap, but has a fan, but an air blows it away in other things….like stop! Have the M1 pro, Max and Air. PRO and MAX should blow away an AIR in every way. And Apple should lower the price of the Air to reflect that. Stop playing the hype game to get people to buy it at a higher price point and then drop it down. Tired of Apple games…

This would've been an easier option if Europe had similar prices. I'll give you my example: I was torn between the M2A and M1PRO. In Portugal the M2A baseline is 1300€ (average) but with 512GB storage and 16GB RAM it bumps up to 1700 territory. I ended up buying the M1PRO for 2k€ which to me is a small enough price difference that will justify it. The M2A simply doesn't give me the confidence for long sessions like even web browsing at home for like 4-5 hours. If I want to game a bit, the M2A feels like it will kill itself trying to keep up so the fans on the pro and considering how optimized these laptops are, feels better. Also the battery life on the M1s especially the M1PRO/MAX was already super good and on real life use I reckon the difference won't be that big. Also the extra ports is simply something people aren't valuing imo. The hdmi port will be user important if you're trying to project a presentation for an audience for example or having better portatibility at home with monitors. With the M2A I would need to buy an adaptor just for this which doesn't seem that good. Also 256GB (i'm not even going to address the speeds has it's fast enough that most people won't notice) is super super low for a laptop and being forced to buy external storage is yet another gadget that I will have to buy. If you add all of this to the 1300€ MBA suddenly Its getting more and more expensive (the pro also has an audio jack..)

One thing some of these videos made me realize is that rendering speeds are only a small percentage of the time we spend on creating a video project. Majority of the time we use are spent on putting the timeline together. So one thing users should look out for is the editing experience. You can finish a project faster if the software provides you a great and smooth editing experience.

When we specced the air to 16Gb ram and 512GB ssd, the price gap between the 14inch pro is pretty slim. On the other hand the 14inch has better speaker, better screen yet, it's more potential performance thanks to better cooling system. Please don't give people wrong advice. The 10-core GPU M2 might throttle inside the M2 MBA, but it's going to be more energy efficient when it's in those throttled power states, thanks to 10 cores running in parallel vs. 8 (it might sound counter intuitive, but running 10 cores at a lower voltage than 8 cores at a higher voltage will give you better performance at the same power levels, a.k.a better performance per watt, which equals lower energy usage). So even if there's no speed difference, you're going to get better battery life on throttled power states with the 10-core M2.

I wouldn't even call MBP a portable computer once you try MBA. But same vast difference goes for the screen. MBA screen is just a mess after you use 1000 nits MBP. The port selection can be really important for professional workflows (which is why I previously avoided all the thunderbolt only Macbook models). Especially when you're on the go, it's very easy to forget a dongle. I've already used the HDMI and SD card slot a bunch. My only complaint about the 14 inch is that they didn't also include a USB A. I of course had two adapters but I recently took it with me on a trip and lost them both in transit. Just another example of why having the proper port is always preferable to an adapter.

Later down the line if I get into video editing or gaming or IT more I’ll upgrade to a pro. But rn I can’t justify the upgrade off of the possibility I’ll need all that power in the future. One of my main concerns is the thermal throttling. I wonder just how reallistic are these benchmarks that make it throttle pushing the M2 Air to the limit. The most video editing I will be doing, is 4k videos related to real estate: house showings, drone videos and maybe some longer videos of myself on a "podcast" format. I don't think if these kind of sustained work will make it thermal-throttle.
@C0mpurgator
@C0mpurgator Жыл бұрын
You're not going to run into thermal throttling issues at all with the M2 Air unless you're trying to use it for gaming or nonstop CPU-heavy tasks. The M2 is so efficient that it breezes through pretty much everything you can throw at it without any problems. I sold my 16" MBP M1 Pro to move to the M2 because I got tired of hauling around a five pound device just for productivity and some coding. And side note, the MBP 14" actually gets pretty hot under heavy loads anyways (with a higher specced M1 Pro or M1 Max onboard); the 16" MBP is the way to go if you don't want your laptop fans running at 100% and the device getting hot anyways lol. Tldr; the M2 Air is more than enough for 90% of users, and you won't run into any thermal throttling issues unless you're running Cinebench back to back for some reason. And if you're going for an M1 Pro model, the 16" is the way to go because of the absolutely abysmal battery life on the 14" (plus thermal throttling issues under heavy load on the 14").

I like small machines. Portable and light. I just needed more beef in processing power though since I deal with high res videos and fast frame rates. The M1 Pro does that. Plus an extra thunderbolt port. So the 14” was the perfect balance for me as of right now for those kind of things for right now. If I need even more power, I’ll probably just head straight to the Mac Studio instead with newer chips. If they slapped on that same chip on the MacBook Air and gave me that extra port, I would probably have ordered one since it’s cheaper. The M2 Pro that will be on the new MacBook Pros will of course be improved, how much though? We shall see when apple launches that whenever they do that. Like I said, I might just head straight to the Mac Studio if I need more performance. The laptops can only be so powerful. It has to be able to run on battery after all and they can only do the best it can to cool the system down. On desktops, there’s plenty of headspace to put a way better cooling system in the machine.

Since then, others followed the example and it was not unique any more. The 12" you mention could well take up that mantle.

@@MaxTechOfficial Pretty sure Apple wants to fill that niche with their iPads. They’ve been pushing the "iPad is the new computer" angle a lot in their marketing.
