Between Lightroom Classic, Photoshop and Final Cut Pro my base M1 Pro was constantly using a ton of swap. Looking at Activity Monitor I always could hear your voice in my head telling me I needed 32 GB’s of RAM or more for a pro workflow. I bit the bullet and picked up a 64 GB/2 TB M1 Max on sale at B&H for the same price as a new 16 GB/1 TB M2 Pro. Prices on the M1 Pro/M1 Max models are great right now.

Thanks for the video, Art!! The intro was much less annoying without the request to subscribe and like at the very beginning. I usually watch KZbin at 2x, and the new animations with the like and subscribe buttons were popping up all the time which was also distracting (no less then the MacOS cursor at the beginning slides). I was also distracted by how close the text on the slides was to the video overlay, since it's a rookie mistake of layout design. Perhaps, you could show the graphs on the Benq displays, and fade in to the fullscreen graph for those who want to pause the video. You would promote Benq at the same time, thus killing two birds with one stone! I liked how you showed the visuals with the core saturation. It was satisfying to see that M2 keeps at 99.9% of utilization and I missed that visual in subsequent slides. Max Tech explained a long time ago why M1s cannot be fully utilized - it had something to do with wrong choice of performance strategy by Apple that would require developers to do extra hard work, instead of betting on a different approach. Perhaps that's what has been fixed with the M2. I like how you keep comparing the same software all time time, it creates a good point of reference for future products. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the serious photo tests, Lightroom CC is starting to look good, the export was allways much slower in the past compared to LR Classic in your tests, but now it's much improved! Although previously the M1 Max came out significantly faster in LR Classic export test (10min) and that 14min was the Mac Mini M1 8/8 16GB export time.

I’ve been refreshing your feed all week waiting for this video! Top work as always!! However, I do have a question, in the first video you did with the updated LR classic GPU export this same 16” M1 Max chip exported in 10m22s… i know it was but I have to ask, was this latest test done under the same conditions?? If so have I missed something totally obvious for the difference in time?
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
That difference in time comes from the OS and LRC update. Things run slower in Ventura and LRC export slower in the latest release. So it is a combo effect really. I'll probably do a video talking about this at some point. However, that is the reason behind all of the variations.

@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
I would start with RAM and then trickle down to SSD and then SoC. Upgrading SoC will see a performance gained on average of about a min or 2 in heavy workflow as you have seen. RAM you'll see more benefit. And don't buy into the upgrade SSD for speed and get the stock RAM, conundrum, it is a logic that does not make sense and go against any computing logic past and present.

As a Pro Digital Tech I can tell you in Capture One we RARELY ever import. It is PRIMARILY a tethered capture tool so it would make sense they haven't prioritized optimizing card imports. Additionally when tethered, C1 will render a preview of the image but it needs to do so in the most efficient manner possible so it doesn't slow down tethered capture. Generally we will set preview size to minimum at 640px and occasionally if client wants low-res JPGs I may set preview size to 2560px, so that I can leverage quickproofs on export.
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
I hear you and I am aware of the primary use. I used it before in tether shooting. But here’s the thing, C1 is trying to market to LRC uses and if that is the case then there should be a toggle for different usage modal. Default it to tether but have a modal for the user group that they are trying to capture as well.

I asked the same question yesterday, but I want to ask it again. I'm using an a7r3 (4240mp) and I go out for photo shoots 2-3 times a month. I take between 500 and 700 pictures every time I go out. That also means that Capture One and Lightroom are not sensitive to import and export speeds. I am not a commercial photographer. If I buy a MacBook this time, I want to use it for about 5 years. I don't take panoramic photos, but mainly enjoy taking snaps, close-ups, or portraits. If so, would the basic specifications of the m2pro suffice? Which option would you recommend to increase among cpu, gpu, ram? If you choose the one with the highest priority.

Honestly, why I am thinking I want the M2 Macbook Pro 14 inch rather than the M1 Pro that is cheaper when you can find deals is because I heard the Macbook Pro 14 had a heating issue with the M1 Pro M1 Max chip, but evidently they beefed up the cooling solution so I am interested to see how hot it gets.
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
in my testing of the M1 Max 14" there's a lot of talk about heat but it does not over heat or burn, it might thermo throttle more than the 16 but that is by design rather than a fault.
@Bigsargewaymo7 Жыл бұрын
@@ArtIsRight Thanks, I hear about a beefier cooling solution and that very well may be the case but I think that's negated due to the boost/cores they gave to the M2 Pro/Max because I see that during the bechmarks when the cpu is running full tilt it gets hotter than M1 Pro/Max so makes sense.

M2 gen is hotter than M1, same / slightly improved node - more transistor. Once Apple move to smaller node it will help with the heat.

Apple has decided not to compete with developers because it deters devs from building their own apps. This has meant iPadOS apps have been slow to arrive, and Apple no doubt wants macOS devs to move the game on. It was a wrong business choice to compete with bread and butter devs, so rightly, Apple is pulling back. Now we see the results; no FCP for iPad, so DV Resolve is coded for iPad. Supporting devs and moving to other apps is my advice.

For example adjusting white balance and other things to create a whole set of images with similar mood. And it will use mainly skin tones to do so to make skin tones very much the same. And with that they are targeting event and wedding photography, and that certainly doesn’t happen tethered, you’d lose way too much flexibility and the ability to move around as you need to. So there is definitely a gap in Capture One here. Also it just doesn’t make sense at all to basically neglect the development on the hardware side and not utilise the available resources like CPU and GPU cores, and in the future Neural Engine cores as well (I could think of masking and stuff like that).

Are the results from Lightroom classic workflow 1:1 proportional with Adobe Bridge and ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) workflow?
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
I would say so but Bridge and ACR does not render a preview for all the files at open upon open like LRC. So the it is not a good comparison per say.
@semkobalcerski Жыл бұрын
@@ArtIsRight What if I ask Bridge to Build the Cache? Wouldn't that be the same as LRC import?

I supposed so, and I would venture that they are about the same.

These reviews are 💯💯💯🙌🏽🙏🏽💻 I’m looking to get the 16” M2 Max with either 32gb or 64gb. Scared of missing out with the 32gb but not sure I need the 64gb 🥹 I’m coming from a 2017 i7 iMac / 4.2ghz / i7 / Radeon 580 / OWC 40gb ram / 1TB storage. The pressure never turns yellow, stays in green, but goes between 30-34.5gb usage when using LR and having Chrome with way too many windows open lol! So it does go above 32gb but only by 3gb(never gone past 35gb). The reason I’m confused is because it never turns yellow but, photos take up to 5 seconds to load between each photo(from a7Riii / 41MP) in LR, and video as low as 2.7K from a DJI Mavic 2P, or 1080 120fps(from a7Riii) stutter in playback. 4K from a7Riii play fine if no coloring or noise reduction is applied. Would love your opinion on which to get, 32 vs 64 ram? 🙏🏽 Maybe the slowness is simply the ancient i7 and not ram since it’s always green?? Thank you again!
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
How long it takes is more slow chip than RAM. You should be ok with 32. Personally, if you keep your machine for a long time and you work with these large files, just go with 64GB and call it the day.

@@ArtIsRight 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 Thank you so much!! I definitely try and use the gear I have until it’s unbearable to use or the time it takes away from being able to deliver or even time away from family, become an issue 🥲 I just found two M2M’s on sale. 30core/32gb/2TB is $200 off. And 38core/64gb/1TB IS $250 off 🫢 It’s $150(between the two options) more for 64gb and 38core(not sure I even want 38 haha), but I lose 1TB. I did have my heart set on 2TB but this seems like a good deal… any thoughts here? 😅

@@ArtIsRight Ah yes… it’s a bit crazy. I’m slowly moving from 1920x1080/4K(8-bit) 24-120fps video on my full frame cameras to (10-bit) 24-240fps video and it doesn’t affect the ram as much as Lightroom does lol! High megapixel photos are no joke! For piece of mind I like what you’re recommending so thank you again 🙌🏽🥹🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 I do have THREE 2TB SSD’s that I work off of(Samsung T3/T5/& T7 lol) so I “was” hoping to make the MBP SSD like another project drive, but 1TB with a higher spec machine will do and I’ll just be better at forcing myself to work on less at one time haha 😳🤓 Your content and time is so helpful 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Cheers!!

Is it just me or Photoshop's Liquify tool is super laggy on my 16” M2 Max 32GB Ram? Lastly, when selecting object select in Lightroom’s masking option the app would just minimize back into dock. As a photographer, I'm extremely let down.
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
This is what happens... bleeding edge and pro workflow / needs / expectation will never go hand in hand or be a balanced equation. It is optimization for the M2 that is lacking right now. Chip comes fast, because Apple is vertically integrated. App devs are not and even though we expect tie-in / co-operation between these large corporations, the reality is really very little to none and that is why we have software app that lag behind chip some time significantly.

First a big thank you for your reliability and constancy you support us with data. Then an important (to me) consideration: you should target video pros. And with this I mean in depth tests with davinci resolve studio, premiere and after effects. With in depth I mean non just exports, but timeline performance, stabilizer, color grades, noise reduction, the new audio effects (voice isolation) in davinci. Because that's a benchmark for actual productivity. And do that with h264, h265, 420, 422, prores and also a couple of raw files, namely a 6k braw, an 8k red and a canon C70 raw LT file. Now that would be a step up for tlyour channel. And I would forsee a huge increase of interest for your channel, because the machines you analyze are (should be) made for pros, and this is exactly what we would consider relevant information for the video industry. Thank you for your time and work. Best
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
I hear you, I'll take that into consideration but then at the end of the day I am not a video pro by any means. I am a pro photographer who does light video, which is why the approach is as such. I would like more view but I don't necessary want to be the Swiss army knives of review either, where I can speak educatedly about how the app works and performs. But like I said, I'll give this some thought.

Please test 14” MacBook Pro - M2 Max - 30c GPU - 32GB - 1TB vs 16” M1 Max - 32c GPU - 32GB - 1TB for video editing and rendering using Adobe premiere pro and Adobe after effects and FcP and DaVinci resolve then compare with m2 max 38c GPU 😮
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
Editing wise you are not going to see much variation unless you apply many filter and effects. As far as export goes M2 Max and M1 Max uses the media engine and works at about the same speed based on what you seen in this video. There's not going to be much variation between these 2. When it comes to CPU performance you can already seen the results here.

why they soldering the SSD tho and overcharging 3x-4x the price per TeraByte? If the SSD fails you .. they'll charge you 50% of the price of the machine because the way they go about the repair is by replacing your whole motherboard (basically all the guts of your machine). Absolutely wasteful.

One size fits all if it is a stretchable fabric BTW, clearly this Apple design doesn't have this 100 year old mentality;) An upgradable machine would fit to anyone. Of course it is a financial decision by Apple so no surprises ...

That is a false premise. Apple Silicon is on a new architecture based around non-upgradeable A-chips from the iPhone and iPad. They were designed from the ground up to not be upgradeable, and no one ever complains that phones and tablets, which can cost more than most laptops, are not upgradeable. You need to change your psyche; just because the older tech was upgradeable does not mean that it is the best solution as tech advances.
