But somehow after I received confirmation and tracking they said it was back ordered. I then saw a MacBook Pro M3 Pro Space Black for about $1600 on Best Buy website at my local store as an open box in pristine condition. The only thing that was noticeable on it was a dirty screen which was no problem after I cleaned it. Associate at Best Buy said their open box electronics are cheap but typically in excellent condition because people return them for not liking the color or wanting something more expensive, which their return policy is only 15 days. Sorry for the long story 😂

I think the pricing is there to nudge people to upgrade to the $1999 M3 Pro model. If you need more than 8GB of RAM, the $200 extra for the M3 Pro chip seems like a no brainer.

Basically the new MBP with M3 basic chip takes the position of 13” MBP with Touch Bar. Adding a few hundred bucks to your budget gets you a superior model. I can’t wait to see what Apple would do with their M3 MBAs.

Something important that is not mentioned in this video is that the standard M3 macbook can only be configured with a maximum of 24gb RAM. The M3 Pro can be configured with up to 36gb RAM. The increased RAM capacity of the M3 Pro is the main reason why I bought that model. 16GB of RAM is a bare minimum for any computer in the year 2023. It's ridiculous that Apple is still selling computers with 8gb's! If you want the computer to stay relevant for 8+ years, you'll need at least 32gb's. 64gb's would be even better, but then you are looking at $4000+ with the M3 Max chip. The 14" M3 Pro with 36gb is probably the best option for those that want something that's relatively affordable, and will remain relevant for many years.

I bought the 16 GB MacBook Pro M3 for $1520 net price, and you can too. Using the educational discount (which Apple lets anyone use without question), the price dropped from $1799 to about $1580. Then, since I have an Apple Card, the cash back of about $60 got me to $1520. Only about $20 more than the sale price of $1499. I’m OK with an additional 8 GB of RAM for $20.

I’m going to disagree with the premise of this entire video. Once again, the exact same tests are run regardless of whether it’s a MacBook Air or a Mac Studio Ultra. The people who are the target market for the M3 MBP aren’t running Lightroom, Final Cut Pro, Blender, or Cinebench (nobody runs Cinebench IRL). What they’re doing is running Word, Excel, PowerPoint, web browsing, and doing some light Photoshop Elements editing on single photos, not exporting 50 or 100 at a time. The target market is office professionals who need the screen, SD card, and HDMI port and don’t want dongles. They’re the ones running from meeting to meeting, plugging their laptop into the projectors in each meeting room and showing their PowerPoint slides. Office professionals far outnumber the types who run Final Cut Pro or Blender, so the wrong tests are being run for this since none of the target users are using the apps tested here. The M3 MBP is a MacBook Air for office professionals who need the additional perks the Pro form factor provides. Should pros who use Blender or Final Cut Pro buy an M3 MBP? No, absolutely not. But they’re not the target market. This video shows a misunderstanding of who this machine is for. Telling these office professionals to spend another $400 for features they don’t need is a mistake.

Thanks for a another nice video and a well reasoned choice recommendation rationale. Apple kind of made a “perfect” upgrade ladder incentive for the M3 MacBook Pro 14” to the M3 Pro based model. Conclusion: Just save up for at least the M3 Pro based base model 😅 Plus you can use 2 external monitors with the M3 Pro chip based model, only 1 with the M3 based model. Many devs like to have at least 2 external monitors.

Base M3 beats base M1 Pro in CPU. M1 Pro has more GPU cores but M3 GPU is newer and more powerful so real-world GPU would usually go to M3. Both start at 512 GB storage, and M3 is using two NAND chips this time so the SSD will be fast (unlike last years base M2). Finally, RAM is significantly better on M1 Pro due to starting at 16 GB vs 8 GB. Memory bandwidth is also higher on the M1 Pro, 200 GB/s vs 100 on M3. However, if you’re willing to drop a little bit more on the M3, I would pick it over M1 Pro any day of the week. (That is, unless you find an amazing price for the TOP end un-binned M1 Pro…)

@@shantytownbrown Well I didn't consider the 1TB version of the base 16" MBP so my price difference was much more - however that said, I liked the ultra long battery life and less heat. Plus some people mentioned a high-pitched whine of the Max so hence my decision. And I love it, my memory usage with 4 different browsers open with 50 tabs or so plus several programs like Notes, Mail, Calendar etc. is around 25 GB, max 30 GB.

If the real world price here in Australia were that close then I would have ordered the M3 Pro but instead after a month of agonising over the two models I went for the standard M3 with 16GB RAM. The most intensive task I need is Lightroom and all the comparison tests I've been seen, including here, is the M3 16GB RAM is quite close to the M3 Pro 18GB RAM. And the price at that spec is AU$2,999 vs AU$3,499. $500 is a lot extra to pay for a few seconds faster in a large Lightroom. File export that I might do maybe once a month. Agonise as I did, that $500 leap didn't seem worth it. I have no need to ever use two external screens. I use a 32" 4K monitor daily and that's enough. Alternatively the Refurbished M2 Pro 16GB is AU$3,199 but these are as rare as hen's teeth and no faster than the standard M3 16GB

@@SuperJohnDoe1980 hi I've only just got it a couple of days and yes using Lightroom Classic and for editing it's as smooth as silk when dragging adjustment bars etc. It's so smooth and snappy compared to my old Intel i7 MacBook Pro (also has 16GB) and multiple file export is fast. It's feeling great for using Lightroom and Photoshop at this point and way quicker than my old Intel Mac, but that's not surprising (even though my old MacBook Pro was the top end one at the time and this new one is bottom end. That's the Apple M processor I guess). From what I've seen in test reports (this one you watched), the 16GB M3 base will handle Lightroom edits just as smoothly as the 18GB M3 Pro but will be about 10-15% slower when exporting a big bunch of files to JPG. That's only a sometimes job for me so I probably won't worry. The 18GB M3 Pro would be nice but AU$500 is a jump. I see that today you can get from Amazon with a discount (but not the 16GB base M3) so at AU$390 price difference it looks more attractive to go higher spec. Better future proof too

@@SuperJohnDoe1980 since I’m still in the “return” window to get a full refund now that I see the 18GB M3 Pro on special at Amazon I have thought about returning my 16GB base M3 as the change over is only AU$390 at present. Like I said, the base M3 with 16GB handles Lightroom very smoothly, no problem at all but I like to keep my Macs for years and I’m mindful that each new version of software seems to need more system resources so while Lightroom might run smooth for now, in 2-3 yrs time it might to slow down. Maybe the M3 Pro for more future proof. All the best for the festive season 😁

Will you do another ram video testing an M3 MBP 16 gig of ram with another M3 MBP that has 24 gigs of ram? You did this with the 13 inch M2 MBP and it was great and informative…

Gents, mistake! M3 is 50 grams lighter than M3 Pro. This is noticeable physical difference.

I'm an photo/video editor and I like some gaming now and then. I would love to see some real gaming tests on these m3, m3 pro and m3 max machines as I'm up for an upgrade. I know they're snappy, but I can't seem to find real gaming content on these. Also the binned/unbinned versions confuse me a lot. Hope to hear from you :)

The big problem with the retailers other than Apple is you can’t upgrade at Best Buy or Amazon other than hard drive and that 1850 is basically just education pricing

8GB RAM is a joke and as soon as you add the $200 to fix this you’re so close to the Pro there’s no point not getting it. The $1600 MBP is a trap that shouldn’t exist.
