I bought one in 2019, sight unseen, while I was in Iraq before I retired. I live near Bragg, so there were people I could trust to look at it. And I've had a long history with them. My truck had been sitting for 11-12 years in front of a local surplus store. Sitting a long time rots rubber things like O-rings in the hydraulic head, brake lines, and pinion seals. If your radiator was left dry for years, like mine, then you'll have rust in the engine. It is easy to fix. Most everything but the injection pump is easy to fix. A fully disassembled pump needs a diesel shop to set the high and low RPM and fuel flow. Yeah, it can be adjusted by hand, but I can't recommend it. As for mine, I now I just have a couple of pinion seals to replace on the TC...and paint to do. I was in the Army for over 30. M923's, HMMWVs, LMTVs are a lot harder to keep in safe operating condition. They are more comfortable, but it comes at the cost of complexity. And the difficulty and expense of maintaining them is commensurate with the complexity. The Deuce is a great truck for what its made to do, will pay for itself in labor. Most of these trucks have already out-lived whoever signed for them new. Think about that. There are a lot of 1960's M35s still in operating condition. The 20-year-old kids who signed for them when new are now in their 70's, or pushing up daisies. Tim is right. On this truck a little love goes a long way. Do it, and those trucks will out-live you too. Tim, thanks for walking us through your truck. Anyone watching, listen to Tim. He knows what he is talking about.

Awesome video. My truck has been mostly parked for the last five years and I’m getting ready to road trip it 400 miles to my new property. This certainly added a few things to my pre-trip check list!

Once a truck is baselines. They really are very durable. Mine has 8 years of me neglecting it and still isn’t that far gone.

Thank you for making this video, seriously. Hopefully I'll be in a spot in a few years I can justify buying on of these, until then I'm doing my homework on them. This helps a ton.

Thanks for watching. I got my air compressor wrench from someone on Steel Soldiers that made a batch 16 years ago. I have seen them since on that website and eBay.

Great & educational video! I would like to have an M-35 truck, but would want to fix any (& all) mechanical deficiencies that any such truck might have. But with likely possible parts availability & maintenance difficulties, I'm not sure maintaining the truck to the standard I would want would be practical. There is also the parts cost element, as well.

Do you know how to get the parking brake freed up if its frozen in the engaged position?
@timsteachablemoments1786
@timsteachablemoments1786 Жыл бұрын
It is a band brake wrapped around a drum on the output of the transfer case. The handle in the cab pulls a cable attached to the drum. Is the handle frozen on, cable frozen on or band frozen in place on? Try disconnecting the linkage at the band and then check the cable.

@Tim's Teachable Moments ok thanks, I'm heading to NC to see a m211 gmc for sale and I was wanting to free to brake in case I do buy it so it can be towed easier. I'm assuming all you would need is a socket set and pb blaster to disconnect the cable under the truck?
@timsteachablemoments1786
@timsteachablemoments1786 Жыл бұрын
@@criticalgay2625 NO! The M211 has no mechanical parts shared with the M35. The M211 is the dual rear wheel version of the M135. Gas engine, automatic transmission, 2 separate rear rear drive shaft outputs from the transfer case and even different wheels if I remember correctly. I have never been under one and have no idea how the parking brake works. Please research them more before you do your trip.

@Tim's Teachable Moments I've tried to find information on it but it seems to be scarce. It looked to me that the parking brake on the m35 is very similar to the m211. I'm sure that the m35 could be used as a reference. It still uses an adjustable brake cable.

One word of caution to all prospective buyers, these trucks are far from new. Most are from the late 60's and early 70's. They've been rode hard and put up wet. Most of them haven't had any PM performed since 2005. They are condition code P which means uneconomically repairable and of no value except for material content. They will be rusty and may have inoperative components as well as cracked frames and crossmembers.
