Hi tim thanks for all you do. Great channel with great information on these old trucks. I have my first m1009 showing up in a few weeks. I was curious on how you felt about 12v conversion on these? My m1009 is completely stock besides manual pushbutton glowplug. Thanks

Thanks for watching. Even converted to 12 volts you still need 2 batteries. I think the 24 volt starter motors work better than the 12 volt units. To me that is reason to keep the stock system. Between the military Technical Manuals and web sites such as Steel Soldiers there is a huge knowledge base for a stock system. If you go to 24 volts. Look up the Roscommon conversion. It is a county in Michigan that converted their CUCV trucks to 12 volts and published how they did it.

Two different items. A supercharger increases volumetric efficiency. A turbo charger aids and assist in cylinder scavaging and increases thermal efficiency.

I have a M1008 that I would like to make a dulley out of, do you have any knowledge of the building of the M 1028 A 2 or were I might find information about the truck, parts or instructions etc. ?
@timsteachablemoments1786
@timsteachablemoments1786 Күн бұрын
You are going to need Dullie front and rear axles since they are a little bit different in width than the M1008 versions. Plus the hubs, brakes and wheels. Unless you just want a project to frustrate you. Finding a civilian or military dual wheel truck will probably be cheaper and easier in the long run. Either to build it or as a parts donor. Steel Soldiers.com has had this discussion a few times as well. Thanks for watching.

Question? Can you say the length of the iron that the horse shoe looking thing bolt on to tow the vehicle? Mines don't have both at the front and I made them to the length of the back ones. The front bumper does have those holes therefore I will have to cut them out. Just need the length to Tim them to size.

Those are called shackles and they hang from the shackle mounts. There always seems to be CUCV front bumpers with the grill guard and the shackle mounts for sale on Steel Soldiers or eBay. They are actually engineered very well behind the bumper. You don’t want one breaking if you are towing.

@timsteachablemoments1786

You are correct. I mis spoke. The isolated ground wire on the #2 alternator does not go to the negative buss bar on the firewall. It goes to the Engine Wiring Harness Block on the firewall over by the brake booster. It correlates to the battery wiring. Negative for #2 battery is used as positive for #1 battery. Sorry I named the wrong Buss bar. Thanks for pointing it out. I will be doing an alternator wiring video soon and will make sure it gets mentioned.

My 1987 6.2 Suburban won't crank. I suspect a bad starter since it clicks once but won't crank. But before I remove the starter, I'm curious about another issue. The glow plug dash light has been intermittent for a while. I installed a bypass switch to the relay but the manual switch doesn't even trigger the dash light anymore even though I can hear something switching on when I flip it. Bad bulb? Bad glow plug controller? Bad glow plugs? I'm feeling I should figure this out before jumping on a starter swap. Any ideas Tim?

I have had a few CUCVs, and the 12/24 volt charging system is usually the biggest issue with them. It’s probably the reason why I get them so cheap also 😂. The second issue is V-belts. I was hoping to add a fuel pump to help with the hard starting issues, I’ve swapped to a modified starter solenoid “dog head mod” and now I’m rebuilding these battery cables to 2/0 gauge wire. Fresh batteries and new remanufactured starter. I think it wasn’t starting from a compound of issues, air in the fuel lines, bad battery cables, bad starter relay that wore down the batteries and starter. Hopefully when I’m done with these fixes it fired right up! Thanks for the tip

I have 6 of the metal nato cans. Bought them for like $40 each online. One i ruined the lining by using it for washer fluid for my semi, easier to carry the one can than it was 5 1gal bottles, i now use it for waste oil between trips to the parts store to empty it. So ive got 25gal with my truck at all tes for long road trips or lawn equipment. One thing ive learned with them is to tilt it back before opening so you dont get the fuel spray from them when they swell in warm temps, would probably be the same solution for the can you only put 4.5 gal in, just tilt back when opening and attaching the spout

I have one older version red metal fuel can like your oldest model with the metal rod attached to the lid. I also have 2 of a somewhat newer version red metal fuel cans. I configured a short piece of chain with medium fish line swivel to attach to the lid so I can spin it off without loosing the top. My buddy gave me 3 plastic fuel totes with the dang updated "safety spouts" which most folks hate. The plastic canisters can be punctured with a sharp object or have the plastic molded seam split after time....now use for non-eth fuel. They came in handy for our recent DERECHO and hurricane Beryl. My area was without power for close to a week ( including local gas stations ) so I learned that keeping my cans and vehicle fueled up is a high priority if a storm is approaching. Thanks Tim. One word of caution to all prospective buyers, these trucks are far from new. Most are from the late 60's and early 70's. They've been rode hard and put up wet. Most of them haven't had any PM performed since 2005. They are condition code P which means uneconomically repairable and of no value except for material content. They will be rusty and may have inoperative components as well as cracked frames and crossmembers.
